Hi this is for anyone medical out there,

Wednesday i was struggling to breath, coughing, aching chest - ended up going to the emergency Dr's who told me a throat infection had gone to my airways making them inflame causing the breathing issues, I was pretty sure he said Virus but that now doesnt make any sense.

I've been put on a steroid,  prednisolone 30 Mg a day (6 tablets) and  an antibiotic, Erythromycin (250 mg daily)  also a nebuliser.

I noticed yesterday my face now looks like jabba the hut, i have no neck anymore and at least 3 chins, the two have kinda blended, my cheeks are puffy hampster cheeks and my face basically looks like a big round ball.

I did my homework and found out a *moon face* is a common side effect of the sterioid which i think i can handle but what i cant find out is how long it lasts, the websites say the drug causes fat to redistribute - I'm so afraid it won't redistribute back and I'll look like this always - the rest of me is normal but my face looks like it belongs to someone else.

Also i got 2 hours sleep last night  - couldnt get anymore just tossing and turning.

I have a Dr appointment at 11.40 but i thought i'd try here also

Once you stop taking the pred the moon face disappears quite quickly. I have taken very high doses in the past for Crohns disease and recently for a brain tumour. The thing I have always found is that pred makes me eat like a horse. It is one of the side effects and you should be careful to monitor what you eat as it is very easy to put on weight while on the drug which is often hard to get rid of when you come off them. Bear in mind though I was on pred for months at a time so harder then to keep things in check.

Don't worry about the moon face it will go down and I would think that you will only be on the pred for a shortish time so it will go back to normal in a few days.

Is this similar to Prednisone?  If so, you have my sympathy.  I've been on Prednisone for asthma.  It makes me jittery and anxious and a complete insomniac.  The side-effects will fade when you stop taking it.

I have injuries and went thru the system.

While steroids have their place... in my case. my then DR over used them.  I had way to many injections.   When I got suspicious and looked up the useage online, I learned he was way over.  So I left his care.

But not before I had fits of rage.   So bad- that it landed me in trouble with the law.

Anyhow - my advice do your own homework- always check and participate in your care.

Hi there i think its the same thing yes.

Thats hwat i was like last night - Phoned up a Dom that Im really close to who lives in the usa last night about 4am uk time, couldnt sleep and I was a total state, i was in tears because i was panicing, i got into my head I was so hideous my fiancee was going to dump me, He spent about an hour with me talking to me and I was ok but outbursts like that are nothing like me. I'm lucky this guy is one of the most amazing men in the world and didnt laugh at me or tell me to snap out of it as i think that would have made me worse.

I just got back from the Dr he saw my face and said its a severe reaction and shouldnt be this bad this fast - i'm now off the steroids and on antihistimine to try and reduce the swelling

your symptoms are the same as mine whenever i have a very bad asthma attack (chronic bronchitis).  funny thing is - i don't smoke but with symptoms like that you'd think i do.

i get the same prescription as well.

What I recall from being on prednisone:  eating constantly, not sleeping except for maybe 3 hours a night, being hyper as hell and having a red face and neck, I was in a constant flushed state.  It looked like I'd just had an orgasm.

There is no way you can feel like yourself when you take Prednisone.  But it will pass, I promise.

That isn't always a bad thing you know...hehe.  I've been taking it two week's so far...got a couple more tabs and I'm done.  Took it for the spots..the allergist put me on a huge dose for a short period of time.
Things I have noticed while taking prednisone.  No added hunger but I have had added energy.
No problem sleeping at all...

From what i can gather from the Dr my reaction wasnt normal as my throat swelled as well as my whole face - i think thats why they took me off.

I read a little online it says you should be wary if taking oral contraceptives or if you have had depression/anxiety in the past? If so i have in both cases  - the emergency Dr never even asked me that.

The man had to take prednisone during chemo treatments.  Made him anxious, jumpy, short tempered (very not him at all) hungry all the time and full of energy.  It also fucked up his sleep big time.  He had to take it for five days after each treatment and during those five day stretches of time he remodeled a bathroom, put hardwood flooring in three rooms, filled a thirty yard dumpster with stuff and cleaned out the garage and basement all because he couldn't relax.  He had to keep busy.  Drove me nuts.
He didn't have any face swelling or anything like that though.  We both hated that drug.  It definitely changed his personality and not for the better.

lifelong asthma and chronic bronchitis has found me on many bouts of prednisone.. some lasting for as long as 6 mos at 80mgs/day.. ive never had the big amount of swelling that you did but yeah my face took on a much rounder shape than it had previously (although it took about 2 wks to develop).. i tend to gain wt. like crazy on the stuff, eat like mad and lose sleep which makes me very edgy... but the good news is, the stuff works and does what its supposed to do.. my main problem with it is that when i get done with course of treatment every joint in my body aches for about 3 days.. apparently this is a side effect after longer term usage, but i cant stand it.. definately not a good pain

I'm worried about the personality changes you're experiencing. Now that you're off the drugs, they should go away, but I don't know how long that'll take. Shouldn't be very long, I would think, but please keep in touch with your doc if you keep feeling like this. I am glad your fiance is coming home tonight, I'd be very concerned if you were alone.

I've taken steroids before - they thought I had shingles, on my face no less, ugh - and I got the moon face/eating like food was never going to happen again/insomnia. The insomnia was the worst.

I am glad that you are off the prednisone. When I started reading this thread I knew your reaction was abnormal. The "moon face" associated with steroid use is a side effect of long term use, not 5 days. The mind racing that you are experiencing now may well come from the antihistamine you are now taking. I can't take them because they speed me up like a 10 day clock. Very bad feeling that has me short tempered and grinding my teeth....feeling like I could lose my mind at any second.

Prednisone is one of the few things that will knock out the hive attacks that I get.  For some lucky reason, I only got fat on it, no mood swings or insomnia.  It's not a drug to mess with, though.  It's amazing stuff, but you need to be super aware of changes in your body.
