my left nipple hurts when I touch it.

Yes, I know.. go see a Dr. (right after I make sure I have a roof over my head, utilities and food)

Just for a starting point, any ideas (JUST IDEAS, not looking for a diagnosis online...) why this may be?

I havent been playing (*sighs*), so it's not from that.

No fluids, no discoloration.  If it was my period, BOTH nips would be sore.

This has been going on for a couple of months. Sometimes the soreness is worse than others, but it's THERE.

(eta: sometimes, just my bra rubbing it hurts)

Hi, GreedyTop----
I haven't the foggiest clue what that symptom indicates but what you've already stated as obvious: you need to go to the doctor.  If it's been a couple of months, I'd be reeeeeeally concerned.  I don't want to postulate about what it could be because if you're not already somewhat freaked out, I think it is reasonable to be.  I see what you're saying about finances and other priorities but your health is one of those things that supercedes those other things.  Are there any free clincis/health department clincis/sliding fee scale medical establishments?   I'm not from FL but if you need some help or support trying to locate services, drop me an e-mail.  Seriously, though: seems that going to the doctor sooner than later (Read: now) is the most prudent route.  Sending good thoughts,
  Davan

thx Davan *hugs*

No free clinics that Iknow of.. and because of that limbo wage earning place I am, I dont qualify for 'assistance'... hell, my last GYN exam cost me over 100.00.

and that was at planned parenthood!!

I'm not freaked as much as I am annoyed...LOL

is it a lump or anything GT or just sore and is it constant pain?

As Davan said months means you really should have it checked out, its good that you arent over paniced  no need to be but you should have it checked i think your medical system is seriously warped though.

It appears to be local and chronic.

Do you sleep on that side?

I ask, because I googled "nipple hurts" and among other causes got something like that. Cause may be pressure. From the bra? From something else that pushes against the breast?

Is it a new bra? Did the symptoms start after you started wearing that bra?

Does it help if you put some cotton wool inside the bra, to prevent rubbing? The rubbing may be the cause of the sensitivity.

As a lay person, my counsel would be not to go to a physician unless you feel a lump or notice other visible symptoms, or unless it hurts too much. I do not know if it is sensible counsel. The long duration of the symptom is a bit of a cause for worry.

GT get thee to a doctor, sooner rather than later!  pain of that duration could signal a whole bunch of things, but it's better to rule out the more serious ones asap.  don't want to be alarmist, but breast cancer doesn't need to be felt as a lump before you need to see a doctor.  the pain is a signal something is wrong that needs to be addressed.  not should be, needs to be.  i'm not trying to be gloom and doom, but it worries me that it's been going on this long.  could be nothing more than clogged ducts or a minor infection, but that still should be addressed.

I hope it turns out to be nothing, Greedy.  May I ask, have you ever breast fed?  If so, did you happen to favor the breast on the side you write with?  Is it that one which hurts?

It's been a long damn time since I breast fed, and I still get a small amount of watery milk occassionally, especially from that side.  It doesn't seem like much of a stretch that a duct could be clogged.  I've also been told my breasts have fibrous tumors, and that too is a result of breast feeding.  The fibrous tumors did usually act up in both breasts at the same time, and the pain was never located right on the nipple, but maybe it depends on where the tumors have grown.

I'm sorry you don't have insurance now.  Possibly you could contact the local chapter of the American Cancer Society to see whether any opportunity to get a free mammogram is available in your area?  If that came back clear I'd be less concerned, though I still agree you need to be seen by a MD.

If worse comes to worse, present at your local hospital's ER complaining of the pain....I cannot imagine they could refuse to check you out.  When the bill comes just throw it out, if you don't need care.  It'll damage your credit rating, but better that than your breast.

Best wishes.

Hi Greedy,
I also googled 'nipple pain' but just got a whole bunch of stuff about breast feeding.
I do agree with the others on here though.  It would be best if you could see a doctor.
I am sure that it is nothing serious, some little thing that is easily explained.

Healing hugs to you from across the ocean.

Hi GT,

Some things to consider:

Are you also getting leg cramps at night?

Have you checked for lumps in your breast?

It may also be the sign of a vitamin B12 deficiency. Try taking a supplement for awhile and see if that doesn't alleviate anything.

Can you call an advice nurse?

No that definitely isn't sensible counsel......

GT I wont repeat what others have said....ok I will, please see a doctor.  Can you talk to them and see if you can pay off the account or get a little extra time to pay it?  (do as I say, not as I do as I am currently putting off seeing the dentist as it will be so expensive and so painful)

I just went to my GYN a few weeks ago for my yearly check up and I asked him the same thing. Mine have been hurting and sore on and off for the past few months. He checked them and found no reason for them to be sore. He told me that they were fine and no lumps. Most likely the soreness was from growing pains as our bodys never really stop growing. I have notice they get really sore when I havn't played in a while. I think when mine are sore, it's my body telling me that I need a good playing with. Check yourself and see if you feel any lumps or if they are cracked. A warm washcloth helps.

Does the pain feel like the skin is hurting, or is it more internal or both?  Does the nipple contract properly with stimulation (meaning evenly, and in reaction to stimulation)?  Does it hurt more or less in response to contraction?

Hi, Greedy Top, and < hugs > to you as well!
I did a bit of looking on the internet for some resources in your area.
1)http://www.freemedicalcamps.com/vcampinfo.php?campid=290
2)http://www.magicyellow.com/category/Clinics/Tampa_FL.html  I didn't go through all of the listings but ther eis "All Womens Health center" listed at the bottom of the 1st page
3)http://www.hillscountyhealth.org/
4)http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ppswcf/contact-us.htm  I know your screening wound up being expensive but give them a try.  You've been there before, so if you just conceptualize it as a 'problem visit' and take in the requisite documentation to get a sliding fee scale, the cost may not be so brutal
5) Area medical schools may offer free clinics (Though, I'd dispense with them for a pain of several months duration)
6) If you go to an ER, you aren't going to have to pay up front.  You can ask that they bill you.  You can also ask, once the bill comes, for a reduction in bill (Sometimes do-able), you can set up payment plans, etc.
7) There are, up here, things called 'minute clinics' or some sort popping up in some drug stores.  Not sure waht their costs or level of expertise but maybe worth a look as well
I know that you're annoyed by the sensation but somewhere in your head, you've also gotta be concerned.  I avoid doctors like the plague typically and with the situation you're describing, my booty would be in a chair in some waiting room and how to pay for it be damned.  And yes, coloured in, the American healthcare system is screwed.
I am trying to think of any physical correlaries I've experienced:  short of someone giving them lots of attention or having a clamp or some such (Alas, neither of the above of late), I can't say that I can think of one hurting more than another.  When both hurt, it tends to be more 'global' (Okay, I've gotta < smirk > at that one) than 'local' and that tends to be from hormonal fluctuations and sometimes taking Vitamin E keeps it from happening.  I wouldn't want to go with anything 'home remedy-esque' until serious issues were ruled out, though.
If none of those suggestions pan out when you give them a call, let me know, if you'd like, and we can put our heads together on some more options.  :>

I echo what others have said.  Go to the doctor.

So, are you fondling your nipple while you sleep?

Just saying...seems men always play with themselves when they sleep.  Why not women to?

thanks for all the advice..

in no particular order:
I've never had kids, so no breast feeding.
I tend to sleep on the opposite side.
I doubt I've been fondling it in my sleep (I don't care for breast play to begin with, plus since I sleep on my right side, the hand likely to do so would be tucked under me)
as far as I can tell it reacts normally to stim, and the pain seems to be a combo of ext/int, no dif that I've noticed in reaction.
Temp doesnt seemto be a factor.
I've had this bra for about 2 yrs.
Davan and kitten.. thanks..

(y'all so ROCK!!)

Some causes of nipple pain:

1.  Rough sex
2.  Jogging without a bra
3.  Jogging with a poorly fitting bra
4.  Paget's disease (a type of breast cancer - rare)
5.  Zuska's disease (a condition affecting the ducts; nipple pain is one symptom)
6.  Benign breast tumors (which may or may not be affected by hormonal fluctuations)
7.  Bacterial or fungal infection (even though the skin may appear normal)
8.  Inadequate natural lubrication (there are oil glands on the nipple that keep the tender skin in good condition)

Generally, the follow treatment will help until you can see a doctor:
1.  Hot or cold compresses (try both or alternate, see what helps you; generally hot compresses are best)
2.  Wear a good supportive bra that has no seams across the nipple
3.  Eliminate caffeine
4.  Take ibuprofin
5.  Take oil of primrose capsules (available over the counter)
