I've never quite understood this line of thinking that regards discretion, judgment, and exceptions as a bad thing. Sometimes a competing interests trumps a libertarian interest. And so why not pick and choose, within reason, and why can't life choices be A la cart?

'Libertarianism is not an "A la cart" philosophy.' not being an "A la cart" philosophy is a contradiction in terms, its a bit like having organised anarchists.

No...It is a dancing thing.

Which part of, "It is much easier to get people to agree on principles than it is to get them to agree on lunch," sounds like a dictatorship to you? Note the words "people" and "agree" in the sentence. Dance with that.

The United States was never intended to be a democracy. Tyranny is tyranny, whether it be the tyranny of a dictator or the tyranny of a majority. Democracy is three wolves and a sheep voting on lunch. Yet we have come to the point where we elevate "democracy" above principles. This is unfortunate. It is much easier to get people to agree on principles than it is to get them to agree on lunch.

But I digress....

Your characterization of the wolves and the sheep is a flawed analogy.  It would appear that you prefer the tyranny of the few as opposed to the tyranny of the many.  We have a constitution and a bill of rights.  We have a balance of power amongst the three branches of government.

Why didn't you say that in the first place instead of the horse shit story about sheep and wolves and tyranny of the majority.

If you are not in favor of majority rule then the implication is that you are in favor of minority rule.

I am in favor of rule by principles, all matters within the compass of which, but not beyond, being subject to debate and vote.

Benjamin FranklinDemocracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.

He also said:  They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty.

Another of Ben's observations:  The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.

And a final caution from him:  When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.

Methinks the republic fell long ago.  That said, I am relieved to know the Ben Franklin's philosophies are flawed.

Or perhaps we should seriously think about the principles upon which this country (USA) was originally founded.

What are the flaws, specifically, and on what basis do you "know" they are flaws?

Just that Hunter S seems to feel that the analogy was flawed.  Admittedly you did not use Ben's quote in its entirety.  So that may have caused some confusion.  I just found it facinating that no one picked up that you were paraphrasing one of the well known founders of the USA.

I guess the questions really comes down to whether or not the people of this nation want liberty or want safety.  Everything can't be comfortable and fair for everybody all the time.  And we need to have certain restraints in place to prevent abuse of power.  Unfortunately, it is My opinion (only Mine) that we have swung so far in the other direction that people do not even realize they are setting dangerous precedents and giving away freedoms right and left as they happily go to the polls to support a "democracy".
