Bingo!  I was surprised at how many people thought it was just a ploy to get pissed off Hillary voters.  I don't doubt that he hoped to get some but it was primarily to secure the social conservatives (who can be very pouty and stay home if they don't think they are getting their way).  That's what the Republican party is, an alliance (and an uneasy one at that) between fiscal conservatives and social conservatives.

Hopefully lessons were learned from the past and we will not have a repeat of Kennedy. Today has been a historic day not matter what comes in the future and Obama knows he and we have a long hard road ahead of us. This country however stood up and DEMANDED tonight was going to be the start of a new day and they voted for that.

Next milestone...

2012 A Native American Woman for President...

There is hope for us yet.

poenkitten
1/3 Irish, 1/3 Apache, 1/3 Black...ALL American.

America has spoken. Europe if they could vote with us wanted Obama to win. Many have gotten their wish and had their dreams come true. There is much joy in Africa and in heaven as their precious son has won.

As he said tonight, "God Bless America.".

I agree with you on the fear of an assassination. Some numbskull will try it. We already have someone that has been arrested for planning to.

It is a time for change, hope, peace, and joy. Don't let a few idiots spoil it.

Congratulations to President-elct Obama, for his well run campain, his hope filled speach, and his graciousness to Senator McCain.  He embodies the hopes of more than just a generation.  I wish him all the best in his endeavors to improve life in this nation.

The problem with being elected because you are soooooo not Bush, or a Republican, is a lot like getting married on the rebound.  When the whiplash comes, it can be pretty nasty.  If he is willing and able to follow through with the things he said tonight, he should fair well.  If at the two year mark he hasn't...well...that won't be so good.

Senator McCain is, and will always be, a great American.  A class act, in defeat as well as in victory.  Given the incredible liability of being a Republican running on the heels of such an incredibly horrible Republican administration, what amazes me most is that the popular vote percentage spread was not far greater.  Roughly 48 and 52, last I heard.  Anything less than an 8 point difference would be amazing.  That speaks quite well of the man, IMO.

Yesterday I found myself discussing with someone that I felt a bit sorry for whoever was elected, because the tsunami is already on the way, and whoever is in office is going to have to deal with it.  Her comment? "Neither one of them has waders high enough to keep them out of the amount of shit that is mounting in the Oval Office."  Sadly, I believe she's right...and yet....I can't help but feel hopeful.

At last, our citizenry is voting in larger numbers - as it should have been all along.  Finally, a parent of any color, and either gender, can look at their offspring and say, in complete honesty, "Who knows?  You might be President or Vice President one day.  In this country, you have the opportunity to do anything you are capable of."  I didn't vote for either of them.  That doesn't keep me from respecting them as individuals, and campainers...nor does it keep me from being hopeful about my beloved nation's future, for the fist time in a long time.

I'm not sure how much Americans were aware that the world, literally, was watching this election.

...very true words. i know some posters here think it irrelevant, but i think they're wrong. President Elect Obama will hopefully do a lot to repair the Us's  tarnished reputation.
Philo,I think more care than what reading here would indicate....His election bears IMO immediate fruit in the court of world opinion....some of that tarnished reputation is, by dint of this election redeemed...isn't it?

I would like to add that it was refreshing to have an election that was decided fairly quickly instead of having to fret for hours – or days – afterward.

"The word "change" doesn't impress me at all.  We hear it in every single election.  It is probably the most worn out political cliche there is"

Let me tell you what I think the word 'change' means this time around.
It means people will start thinking of America as the great nation it was and will be again.
It means people feel they have a leader who just might care more about the welfare of the nation than that of a few select contractors.
It means people can maybe start to think a bit more positively about our future.

I could go on but it's late and - guess what: I have to gt up for work in the morning! :)

Update on the MN senatorial race. 2.3 million votes counted so far, 86% reporting and less than 10,000 votes separate Coleman and Frankin - 1,018,000 for Coleman and 1,010,000 for Frankin with the 3rd party right around 350,000. If there is less than a .5% difference between 1st and 2nd place, it's an automatic recount and we've got some major districts yet to be counted.

Sad thing is people think all these things are great  that obama says but they don't look at the real  facts. An what  will really happen  especially to the middle class american, but people will eventually find out  and  wont be  too happy as a  friend had  stated to me this evening he's burried himself in promises, writting checks with his mouth that his ass cant  cash. Good night and good luck to all you people that voted for obama , hope he lives up to your expectations for your sake at least.

It is a night to celebrate the choices we have in this nation.  The choice to vote, or not.  The choice to vote for someone on the ballot, or write in.  The choice to say what you think about the candidates, and the elected.  The choice to use the "hide" function in this forum, aka "ignore".  I making the choice to click that little button, right now.

Life is GOOOOOOOOOD.

Congradulations to all you Obama fans!  (I really loved breaking your balls!) lol
(It's an "Irish" thing.)
My guy (Baldwin) lost.
But, it's important to let the people in Washington know that we're out here.
My other guy lost too (Conley, D. for Senate) I was hoping we could get rid of that arrogant bastard Lindsey Graham!
Let's hope Obama focuses on the USA for a change instead of trying to get us involved in the problems of foreign countries.
This country needs a lot of "rebuilding" now.
He could kill two birds with one stone by having a massive infrastructure program, roads, bridges, sewer lines, electrical, water lines, hospitals, all kinds of things and put the *working man* in this country back to work at *good wages!*
That'll help everyone!
People will have money to buy goods which will help stores, the auto industry, appliances, housing, the stock market, banks, the economy all of it!
And Lord knows we need it!
We don't need anymore bridges collapsing like in Minnisotta.
And, Obama said we should "revisit" "NAFTA".
I REALLY hope he was using a euphimism for "carpet bomb" when he said, "revisit"!"
Take a flame thrower to it!
It's caused the loss of millions of jobs in this country!
And made many of Clinton's and Bush's friends extremely rich.
I just wish he'd come out and say; "It doesn't work, it hurts American workers and we're going to get rid of it! Today!"
I don't care much for Dems or Repubs but *I really do hope* that he turns out to be a good president who *cares* about America first.
I got sick and tired of seeing Clinton and Bush overseas all the time!
They belonged here, in America!
