Sure they do.  But they don't preemptive spew about honor and integrity before doing  it.  [:D]

One point here need addressing.
  • Most arguments on the Gorean Forum and even the ultra heated debates is along differing points of view or book interperation. In a few cases there is much derision poured upon any who admit to roileplaying Gor even though they may actually live a Gorean Lifestyle. Some and notably one individual who sets himself up as a God of Gor when he is not moderating has a very blinkered view on this and refuses to consider that most role players who are actually living a Gorean Lifestyle are able to seperate between RP and Lifestyle. (One of a reaxation game and the other is the way they live, eat, work and breath. When I was both living a Gorean Lifestyle (switching casts between Physician and Scribe due to my work as Counsellor and Therapist as well as Priest) I was able i n the realm of role play have light entertainment ride a tarn or my belovered kaiila and either fight mighty battles or heal broken bones and sword wounds as a Physician as well as encouraging new folk to actually read the books and teaching how to live the life away from RP).  That honour and integrety is mentioned so much is simple that we (Goreans and Victorian Lifestyles)  hold Honour and Integrety as well as courage, Honesty, Loyalty and Duty as dear a life itself and will die for them "Death before dishonour" is not just a frivilous motto but a real way of living a d dieing which many others hold too. I am aware in modern society than most people scoff and spit at the thought of honour for they have none nor understant it which is why there is a widening gap between thise like me and the unwashed masses.

JustDarkness -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 1:33:58 AM)

I read a lot about honour, pride and such in th Gor world.
I read the books...some twice. Just because I need too, with my limited english knowledge....and often because I like them

In many books...I don't even see the honour and pride. I think it was Mercenary of Gor.... I see even a Master beeing horny and making remarks about an others Master slave all the time.
It reminds me what I read about Vikings and Romans. Their honour....then to read their real history...and  notice they killed their leader with a knife in the back to get the power and leadership. ( and do mercenaries have honour?? lol)
Don't misunderstand. I like the books..like some thoughts..but some in my opinion is wishfull thinking..or perhaps glorification.

But still..the books..give an image about a world..I can understand people would like to mirror.

IronBear -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 2:38:20 AM)

Having run a sucessfull mercinary company for many years and operating in SE Asia and South America exclusively for two Governments, I can state that there are a number mercinaries who are honourble people

JustDarkness -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 4:22:55 AM)

Okay let me ask you this John, why do you want to identify as Gorean?

This is a debate for men, you women should stay out of it (said in my best Gorean accent) but sadly, what Rover is doing is a bit over your head.

Gorean's want to blather on about what individuals they are all while blathering on about how important it is to read the books, which is odd since none of them can agree on what the fuck the books mean, which is the point Rover is driving at.  If it is all about being an individual and being responsible for yourself, then you could be a Buddhist pacifist and be Gorean.  Being Gorean is the sexual equivalent of Objectivism.

to this comment, and others more mildly put, i only offer this... the books are not our bible... they simply revealed what we already thought when we started reading them.  oten, the books reveal what IS gorean, and they sometimes reveal what isnt, and the consequences of those actions.  as someone else said.. like esops fables (god my spelling stinks these days)

gor does not identify with BDSM in many ways... one being... they can live without it  a gorean man doesnt have to have a slave.. he is well adept at doing things for himself.. like many outside gor are.  a slave is a slave.. to be a gorean slave, she has to be owned by a gorean... just that simple.. like a roman slave.  even within the books, there are theives, liars, beggars, assassins,.. all sorts of unsavory people.. yet.. they are still gorean.

and when i come back, maybe i can discuss how that works too.. lol

well wishes everyone
enjoy your day!

tazzy

..but..because they live on the planet Gor

the discussion here is...a kinda of different gorean (because we are on earth)

Actually yes, mercenaries do have honor. Just because it is a form  that you  do not understand does not mean that it does not exist.

but do you understand..or do you just guess..?
fight for money might be in their eyes honour..in some one elses eyes it might be far from honour.
many do it for money...a few might do it for the right cause.
Even then...if you fight for the right cause..do you need to get payed?

btw....found not much honour in the gorean mercenaries.....neither the people working for black water in Iraq....and the few I heard talking, fighting in Africa neither.
Perhaps I do understant the form...just don't find honour in them..

OH , I understand. You forget, you and I have had this discussion before, only it was not about mercenaries, it was about the honor among 'gangs'. My stand has not changed, nor has my understanding of honor, loyalty, and integrity among those groups as opposed to the more widely accepted ideas and opinions that most cling to.

edited to fix the quotes.

colouredin -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 8:31:01 AM)

what is that saying honour among theives

JustDarkness -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 8:32:30 AM)

you assume to much. Now you say I forget.
On a forum..we discuss a lott.  Seems to me that is is the reason why it excist.
You can see it your way..I respect that. But don't make it sound so lecturing please....like your way is the right one.

ANd where did I try to push it through your throat? Please show me.

You made a sarcastic and lightly amusing statement

to which I responded by stating

Now, please go back to what I originally said
that just because you do not understand their own form of honor, does not mean it does not exist. No one says you have to accept it, but do not dismiss it as being non-existant,  which is what you originally brought up.

colouredin -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 8:37:24 AM)

honour to your belifs, to tose who share your beliefs, integrity to your beliefs etc doesnt actualy stipulate what those beliefs have to be, it is simply that you stand by your convictions despite anyone throwing arguments at you, doing what uyou believe is right in the face of what is easy. we dont all agree with what is right, we dont all believe the same thing but that doesnt mitigate honour and integrity

JustDarkness -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 8:43:58 AM)

But who said I don't understand it? Perhaps they just have none?
It is just a different view on things.

Honour amongst thiefs...is for me something like..
saying....  Because Hitler had friends...he must have been a lovely person.
Still we know he was an ass. Yes to some he might have been nice...but to many more an asshole.
So what is he? good..or bad?

Same count for mercenaries.... a few might have honour.....most don't. So In general I dare to say.....no they don't have.

But I see the other view too.....

*mmm bit offtopic...back to the books now**

colouredin -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 8:46:14 AM)

Honour is nothing to do with being good or bad.

Hitler had honour for his own beliefs, good and bad is largely subjective

quote:

And how do you know this? Have you had the opportunity to meet many in real life to be able to make such a strong statement?
I have. In addition  to that, I have had the priveledge of knowing many high ranking gang members.
I can support my statements
Can you?

JustDarkness -> RE: The differance between lifestyles (11/9/2008 8:47:40 AM)

IF you can't trust some one..what vallue has his honour.
HOw do you know from a bad person.....cheating, stealing, killing...where his honour starts?
