[How the hell does a PhD in Eng Lit involve visits to the ER?]

Amazing how many local politicians with strong moral and family values do tend to take baths by candlelight and slip repeatedly

You wouldn't be amazed anymore here in the UK, Lady C.  Not since one of our politicians was found dead a while agoy after having partaken of what was later termed a session of  "erotic asphyxiation" that had gone wrong.  We've become desensitized.  And, yes, it so often has been those politicians who most like to promote "family values" for everyone else.

[Roots of medical English terminology in Middle Old English and yes YAAAAAAAAAWN the ER was just on the same premises as the university hospital where I spent a lot of time researching and the ER guys always had fresh coffee that didn't seem to be oil]

LOL, I thought most MPs are found in Clapham with their pants down.... Oh and Clapham actually has an Old English root (Saxon I believe), your fair Isle's shores have been raped, plundered and pillaged by so many races, I do not know why nasty tongues claim you are all inbred ;)

I don't think Saxon and Old English are the same thing, Lady C.  Still, could be wrong.  You're the expert.

I can't remember who it was who was found in Clapham common with his trousers down.  Tell you the truth, those sorts of stories pop up so frequently these days I barely notice them anymore.

Perhaps I misunderstood the original question, but I thought it was about the fact that a lot of people these days go to webmd and self diagnose rather than going to an expert, and, in that light, how people handle new, possibly dangerous kinks (rather than actual visits to the doctor) ... perhaps I was wrong ....

You would be correct, Miss. I wanted to people to deviate from the prompt if they were compelled to do so, of course, but my initial intent was to find out how people dealt with potential medical concerns of this given the social taboos surrounding BDSM.

I'm one of those people who uses, by preference, scalpels, needles, cautery pens... Much of what I learned to do I learned either by practicing on myself, through medical training (paramedic and midwife), or through careful experimentation. I've always been completely straightforward with the medical professionals that I frequent -- not doing so could be fatal, in my case. I've had to dismiss several physicians over the years due to their inability to deal with the realities of what I do and my concomitant health issues. I think that it is in one's best interests to be able to be forthright with medical professionals about one's activities, and to remember that these people are in our employ... so if you can't talk to your doctor, then it's time to find a doctor that you -can- talk to.

There is no excuse for a medical professional who cannot be civil and provide necessary care, regardless of the unusual nature of an individual's practices regarding hir own body. If the doctor or medical professionals in a doctor's office are rude or unhelpful in dealing with situations, it behooves us to not accept that treatment, and to demand treatment that respects our privacy and the right to make decisions about our own bodies... otherwise, these individuals will continue to believe that their behavior is acceptable. The problem, many times, is that we forget that these people are skilled professionals that we are -hiring-. We place them in a position of authority over us, and then allow that authority to extend, out of cultural conditioning, into areas that extend beyond the health aspects and managing our right to live in the way we choose, and allow the doctor to make moral judgements, which is unacceptable.

You are right, I was a bit sloppy and vague with the terminology, the name stems the Anglo-Saxon times when they used Old English, I thought the original word root derives actually from a Saxon root but I'm not 100% sure and to be honest, quite happy that I don't have to bother with it anymore, but part of what I remember (I didn't always snooze at uni) is that it comes from Cloppe + Hamm and dates back before William conquered. I actually quite like how your cows became beef and the pigs pork and the French names were also a bit bastardized.

I must admit I like those basically euphemistic terms for meat in English, Lady C.  In Germany once, I wanted to buy pork and minced beef.  I was told the words I required were schweinfleisch and hackfleisch.  I ended up not wanting either.

BUT - back to the subject . . . .

I must admit, I'd really like to know if there are links to sympathetic medics who, preferably, live locally.  I have relations who are medics, but I'd not want to go to them for advice re BDSM-style erotic misadventures (want of a better term) or before undertaking activities that might end up as such misadventures.  Failing such links, I'd just post on the Health and Safety forum here at CM.

LOL, well you just asked for mince (oh I'm not saying you did mince, but you should have used the prefix rinder)

Since I'm not a fan of meat at all (though fish is OK) my interest is more academic

there are lists online of kink-friendly physicians, therapists, etc around the US - don't know so much about other countries, but I'm sure that people in the local community can at least say who they go to and don't have trouble with (or who they do have trouble with so you can avoid them).

As for me, knowing that my doctor does pretty much what I tell him, I doubt I'll have too much trouble if I show up with bruises from getting rough lol.

I once had a problem with a doctor regarding bruises, it was actually quite funny, he was tiptoeing around the issue and didn't dare to come flat out, so I asked him to be a bit more specific since I really don't get him and why he was stuttering so much. He then asked me if I have unusual sexual preferences or if there might be a case of spousal abuse. I had to laugh because the bruises were the result from martial arts training and sheep feeding, despite being rather "bruise resistant" getting knocked about during training will lead to the odd bruise and near the office was a field with sheep, I usually went out in my lunch break and after work to feed them biccies and bread, the lamps got quite attached to me but they do grow awfully fast and still thought they could jump up on me. I guess the poor doctor thought I'm a member of some weird cult, cloven shaped bruises everywhere...
