Acidophilus bacteria (as found in yogurt) are very helpful with yeast and some other types of infections, and they produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide which are very damaging to a number of viruses, including HIV. Bacillis subtilis and lichenformis produce surfactin, which kills lipophilic viruses (HIV, HSV, CMV and many others), as well as a number of bacteria and yeasts (including candida). Bifidobacteria have their uses, too. Douching with a solution of live, unflavored yogurt, which contain various lactobacilli, is a traditional method of treating yeast infections and vaginitis, For those who don't like the idea of yogurt (which was cultured to eat, not to insert) there are some products now available for the purpose, like these acidophilus suppository capsules, Fermalac: http://www.birthcontrol.com/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=100 ...or Gynatren: http://www.natren.com/pages/vaginitis.asp There are also interesting possibilities on the horizon for genetically modified lactobacilli, if the whole GM thing doesn't give you the creeps. For example: "Cyanovirin was originally isolated from blue-green algae; it binds very specifically to HIV gp120. Work on cyanovirin is now focussed on engineering lactobacilli to produce it, harmless bacteria which could live in the vagina and provide enhanced protection for long periods." http://www.aidsmap.com/en/docs/D701E463-B363-4413-84E4-20A35122F424.asp
