Anybody, anybody at all, think that just maybe the gun manufacturers and their lobby see the opportunity to exploit "fears" to increase sales?

Not that an American corporation would do such a thing, mind you.....

how are these manufacturers trading their products for people who feel they need them being exploitative?

Actually, any gun that with "a flick of a switch" can go fully automatic and unload a magazine is a machine gun, and therefore is not what we are talkign about here.  A semi-automatic gun of any kind will expend one round for every individual time you sqeeze the trigger.  The ATF is very serious on this point.

which is silly as someone who has practiced bumpfiring can empty a clip out of a semi-automatic rifle very quickly.

and I think fully automatic weapons should be legal.

I'm not comfortable with your assault rifle, your pair of pants I couldn't give a shit about....the assault rifle though bothers me.
Now it is way past late and this is one circular argument I am not going to enter into at 2:30 in the morning....but you gave me such a silly assed answer I just figured I would respond.

The constitution gives us the right.  However...that particular document was written well before assault weapons hit the scene.   If your'e loading a musket after each shot, repeat firing takes on new meaning.

When the right to bear arms was penned....I doubt they were thinking of Uzi's.

Just a thought.

um...our founding fathers had artillery pieces on their property. I don't think they'd be too terribly upset at uzi's.

if the second amendment only applied to flintlocks and blunderbusses...then the first amendment only applies to quills and printing presses.

*sigh* you people are so silly.

so because you aren't comofortable with me owning something, I should not be allowed to own it?

As many have said, and as the quote goes...
"When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."
I personally, have no problem with registration. I had to do that with my guns when I lived in NY. Here in Florida, I don't. I carried in NY and I carry here.
Just for the record, I don't have a need for an assault rifle, so I doubt I'll be buying one any time soon. I wouldn't rule it out, but I doubt it. I might consider a shotgun for home defense, but that's pretty much it for longarms. But, that's me. I do agree with one's right to own them.
I did just recently purchase a little hammerless .38 revolver to keep in the car or on my ankle. That had nothing to do with Obama getting elected. Just something I wanted.

Well, wouldn't "one handgun a month", "waiting periods", and "huge taxes" qualify as making it more difficult to buy a gun??  Wouldn't banning assault rifles be taking away a right?

yes yes yes and yes.

all of these things are unconstitutional. but who cares about the constitution any more?

But I suppose guns and their fascination were part of my youth, since then I have grown up a bit and now know only too well what guns are for, no other purpose than killing, I am opposed to killing.

well...I'm not opposed to killing another human. so I'd like to keep my guns in case the need every arises.

I wouldn't foce my beliefs about self-defense upon you. I hope you wouldn't legislate your pascifism upon me.

My problem with registration or with ATF tracing, is that this allows the government to know who has the guns.  Imagine they pass a law saying that a certain gun, or type of gun is now banned.  They could print off a list, distribute to local law, and then you get a knock at the door.  Once I pass my background check for purchase, that should be it with the data.
Personally, I own an AR15, along with many other guns.  I will be buying 3 or 4 more before years end, not because I need them, but because I can afford them, and I want them.  I will be most likely giving one to my nephew as a graduation present, and the rest will be in the safe.  Just because the anti-gunners dont like the "label" the gun has, or what it looks like, doesn't mean they have the right to tell me I can't have one.

Are you reading directly from the NRA flyer?

Actually, he is on record:
*In an Illinois general candidate questionaire, he favored a ban on all handguns.

He specifically said that a ban on all handguns is not 'politically practicable'. He favored a ban on use of handguns for purposes of self defense in the home. He also stated that states and/or cities have the constitutional right to ban guns. Especially in high crime areas.

well...he's wrong. cities and states have no right to deny their citizens anything that is listed in the bill of rights.

obama is so ignorant concerning the constitution.

it hurt my brain.

The .223 round was preferred by the Defense Dept. for two reasons.  One, the round was more likely to wound a soldier as to kill.  It generally takes two soldiers to carry off a wounded soldier, thus taking three out of the fight, at least temporarily.  Second, the smaller, lighter round means that a soldier can carry more on his person into the field, and would likely not run out of ammo as fast.

yeah, but I'd still rather have a fal or m14...

How'd you like to apply for one of those positions as one of the people who goes to people's homes and tries to take their guns away?
"Pay, $10,000 a month. (but you probably won't be cashing your first check.)
"Life insurance included."
($10 worth that'll cost us $1,000 for a week's premium.)
When "they" come to take your guns that's the time to *use* them!

Well, personally, I like the modular design of the AR15/M16.  I would have rather had a slightly larger round with more weight to it as well.  I would like to see something around .260 to .270 and around 100 to 120 grains.  The other thing I do not like is the gas impingement system which quickly fouls the breech.  I prefer the gas piston system for a cleaner, cooler breech.

it already happened during katrina. no shots fired.

but look at it this way. with increased taxes on guns and ammo and/or more gun regulations - they are just opening up more room for a black market to form...

and if I can't find a gun legally, you'd better believe I'll get one from the black market.

I would not want the job.  Beyond the resistance of the owner, I would have moral problems with it.  The sad part is, just like with Great Britain, the vast majority of people would probably go along with it, as we seem to have lost our way as a nation.

I have too many drinking buddies who used the M16 in vietnam. I'd never want one of those things.

They got a bad rap during Vietnam because the Army used ball powder, which is dirtier, which was a holdover from the M14 days.  That caused the jams, and unfortunately, cost the lives of GI's.  Once the powder issue was resolved, and GI's taught to clean the weapon more, the jams weren't as bad.  Again, a gas piston system on the gun would have been a much better way to go.  They have conversion kits now for the gun, and I would hope that the Army would consider them.  The tolerances are tight in a M16/AR15, so any fouling builds up and causes a jam.  Eliminate the fouling, and you have a much more reliable weapon.
