Evility -> Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 4:40:21 PM)

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/11/11/obama.gun.sales/index.html

If my visit to the county courthouse yesterday was any indication I'm guessing firearms license applications are on the rise, too. There wasn't any trend to the applicants I saw, either. Young and old, male and female. I wasn't the only person with concerns about the second amendment, so it seems.

Mark Greene, a hunter and member of Gun Owners for Obama, believes people don’t need to be worried.
"If people want to be afraid of something, they are going to be afraid," said Greene, who helped run Obama’s grassroots campaign in Tarrant County. "It’s just going to take time for him to be in office and show he’s not going to take rights away."
Ben Agger said he’s concerned, though, about what is prompting fear in gun owners.
"What is the underlying motivation . . . to buy assault weapons?" asked Agger, a sociology and humanities professor at the University of Texas at Arlington who wrote There Is a Gunman on Campus: Tragedy and Terror at Virginia Tech. "Part of me worries this is an expression of the need for people who disagree with Obama to arm themselves because they entertain the thought that there could be armed conflict or possibly race war."  (taken from a Star-Telegram article)

Perhaps you're worried about the 2nd Amendment...but some people, are just doing the same old thing ...*yawn*

Don't worry, part of my tongue is placed firmly in cheek.....just part of it, mind you.

I think that there are a lot of factors that could be contributing to increased gun sales....and Obama certainly would not be at the top of my list.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 5:37:22 PM)

Its not just Obama that people fear.  People fear Obama along with a liberal Congress.  Many of these Congressional liberals have wanted further gun controls all along, but could not get it with Bush in the White House.  With Obama, and a larger Democratic majority, it only makes sense to think that they will eventually want to extend gun controls further.  Democrats all along did not want to the the bans on magazine capacity or assault rifles sunset.  I would imagine those will be the first targets of the left, once they get beyond this economic crisis and start focusing on their social policies.
Obama himself has advocated against concealed carry permits, asault rifles, and has wanted to see a 500% tax on gun sales and ammo sales.  I think the recent gun sales activity in part is due to people wanting to buy guns, like assault rifles, that may not be available soon.  I think others are just wanting to avoid paying $3,000 for a $500 gun, if the tax thing goes through.  I don't see an outright ban on guns, as many on the left would have, because of the recent Heller case.  I do see the left making an end run around that by taxing guns and ammo so heavily that the average person cannot afford them anymore.
As for me, I will be buying quite a few guns, and lots of ammo, between now and Jan.

Scary, scary, America and their guns, just what would you be like if you lived in the UK where only criminals seem to have guns.

Still, I suppose with all the buying and owning of such things, you are helping the arms industry.

I will make do with my slingshot and ball bearing collection.

SilverMark -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 5:46:05 PM)

Ok, I understand the right to own a weapon....someone please tell me why people need to own assault weapons? It's not a shot at anyone's Constitutional rights nor an editorial comment, it is just an honest inquiry.

Are you saying that increased gun buying is due to fascist cuntery?

SilverMark -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 5:49:15 PM)

cuntery??????....I like that!

Not sure why anyone would want one of those, unless they have Rambo fantasies, but if everything goes pear shaped one thing is for sure, with all those guns in private hands, how long will the US population last ? Have gun, will kill, for whatever.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 5:52:18 PM)

Just because you don't have a need or desire for an assault rifle, others do.  The problem with ANY gun control is simple....once the gun control groups gain a victory, such as banning assault rifles, they do not celebrate, then fold up shop and go back to their normal lives.  They take that victory, and become emboldened to go for further restrictions.  If we who value the 2nd amendment give one inch, we will wind up giving and giving, and giving, until we are left with nothing more than memories of the "good old days"....

*Curtsey*. I aim to please ;-p.

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 5:55:42 PM)

I don't know about fascist, but its the anti-gun liberal crowd.  Its no coincidence that sales have spiked.  Its started when Obama started looking like he was going to win, and they have continued now that he has.  I would expect sales to remain brisk through January, and actually beyond, as people get their tax refund checks.

Okay ,just for shits and giggles give me one example of a private citizens "need" for an assault rifle....

SilverMark -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 5:57:11 PM)

So it isn't the right to own a gun....it is a right to own one of your chosing without regard to what the weapon is made for?
If that is the case should they sell 50 caliber machine guns?

Cool. I'll have a couple of H bombs please. No need to wrap them.

Aneirin -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 5:58:48 PM)

A question though, why does a person need to buy a gun ?

Heavy smelly things they are, ugh, how I hate the smell of gun oil.

Oh good Gawd. Why is it that every single gun thread.....no matter what is being discussed.....ends up boiling down to this. Seriously SilverMark, I mean you no disrespect but you will find many different answers to that question....but to be perfectly honest....I've never seen any answer to it matter one whit to someone who already has their mind set about assault weapons. Personally, I regularly hunt with mine...it's a damned accurate gun.

Lucylastic -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:00:21 PM)

I want one, just for the rabid pissed of repubs  that are going to go postal[sm=insane.gif]
yes, said with my  tongue in my cheek
Lucy

Joenextdoor -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:01:29 PM)

I said need or desire.  I don't have to justify anyone's choice in wanting one.  For the record, I own one, and will own more before Jan.
Also, the term "assault rifle" is one I wish would change due to negative conotations.  I believe many in the industry call them sporting rifles now.  I do know that many people enjoy target shooting and varmit shooting, with them.

kittinSol -> RE: Gun Sales Up Since Obama Election Victory (11/11/2008 6:03:40 PM)

Actually, I'll have half a dozen of nuclear warheads with the bombs please [:)] .
