mystickoolaid -> RE: GI bleeding, blood in urine and nose bleeds? (11/20/2008 6:21:12 AM)

Crap, I forgot to list the other symptoms... my brain is poop... I think that might be some sort of  new disease.  LMAO
  • abdominal bloating and pain
  • chronic diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • pale, foul-smelling, or fatty stool
  • weight loss
In adults there are sometimes other symptoms:
  • unexplained iron-deficiency anemia
  • fatigue
  • bone or joint pain
  • arthritis
  • bone loss or osteoporosis
  • depression or anxiety
  • tingling numbness in the hands and feet
  • seizures
  • missed menstrual periods
  • infertility or recurrent miscarriage
  • canker sores inside the mouth
  • an itchy skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis
Sorry for the copy/paste job. I found what I needed and didn't want to type it all out. LOL

Edited to add: adults are supposedly less likely to experience tummy problems from it, but all the case reports I have read about adults said that their main complaint was diarrhea, in the cases that weren't very severe.

Okay...so I googled and I have some of the other symptoms.

anemia (usually...but I take suppliments)
fatigue
bone and joint pain
depression and anxiety
tingling and numbness in hands and feet
irregular periods (before I started birth control I would go 6 months or so without one)
canker sores inside my mouth
And I have the malabsorbtion...a lot of foods go straight through me without being digested.

oh and I have the diarrhea and constipation, severe stomach bloating (will go up 6-7 inches over the course of a few days) rarely vomitting but I'm nauseous daily.

The anemia could just be part of the malabsorption. My stomach is all out of whack too, and they diagnosed me with IBS and reflux, it's all they could really find. This is before celiacs disease really came to the surface, though. They claim most  adults dont have the stomach symptoms. It's nearly impossible to avoid gluten. You have to eat some really strange things to compensate. :( I hope everything goes ok, and there s nothing wrong. But celiacs disease wouldnt be the WORST thing in the world...

Also, I just want to point out that everyone's poop smells "foul" I think we all have it!!! *laugh*

Well usually, it's very obvious to people with celiac's that would be that severe, they experience worse/more horrible/more frequent symptoms when they eat a ton of gluten than when they don't... you haven't mentioned anything that would indicate this is a food problem since your symptoms seem to be constant and don't vary day to day depending what you eat...

or DO they...?

Well, certain foods give me diarrhea. Tacos...any fast food...pizza...pasta sauce...I don't know if those contain gluten though.

Have they checked your gallbladder? It processes fats. If your body can't process fats, they tend to give you the runs.

I'm sorry you're going through this as well. It sucks.

My local grocery store sells a lot of foods labeled "gluten free" in their organic/vegetarian section of the store. So I could pretty easily avoid it if I need to. But I have a feeling it won't be very fun. LOL

Yep. Two tests on it like...two years ago? I think. I had an ultrasound and some type of scan where I had an IV in my arm and had to lay there for ages. It was fine except a slight thickening of the walls but my doctor said thats normal.

mystickoolaid -> RE: GI bleeding, blood in urine and nose bleeds? (11/20/2008 6:33:58 AM)

The Gluten-free Diet A gluten-free diet means not eating foods that contain wheat, rye, and barley. The foods and products made from these grains should also be avoided. In other words, a person with celiac disease should not eat most grain, pasta, cereal, and many processed foods. Despite these restrictions, people with celiac disease can eat a well-balanced diet with a variety of foods. They can use potato, rice, soy, amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, or bean flour instead of wheat flour. They can buy gluten-free bread, pasta, and other products from stores that carry organic foods, or order products from special food companies. Gluten-free products are increasingly available from mainstream stores.
(from a google source I found) Organic foods are SO expensive! And I don't think most of the gluten free foods are very tasty. But "plain" meats and vegetables aren't so bad.

I've had almost constant diarrhea or other tummy troubles since I can remember (shortly after potty training is my first memory of it) So I imagine it's more 'normal' for me than someone who hasn't been dealing with it their whole life. It sucks for me, so I can't imagine how it is for you.

dollparts85 -> RE: GI bleeding, blood in urine and nose bleeds? (11/20/2008 6:38:31 AM)

Yeah...I've been having it all my life as well. I just assumed it was normal for me and thought maybe I had IBS or something...no big deal...but now I'm kinda worried it may be something more.

Well, I wish you the best of luck. I wouldn't worry too much about celiac's disease, even if you DO have it, it's possible to live relatively normally. I am sending all my e-hugs your way on this. Please keep me updated.

The anemia could just be part of the malabsorption.

The anemia is due to the GI bleeding

But to the OP:
Get a gastro- and rectoscopy with your GI specialist. Dark, clotted blood in the stools indicates a bleeding in the upper GI tract. You could have a gastric ulcer or duodenal ulcer which could also explain your bloating and aches.  The cause of the ulcers or bleedings can be various, medications could be one of them. But before you start to ponder the reasons of the bleeding, then you have to get to know the source, i.e. gastro/rectoscopy.

Good luck and best wishes.

mystickoolaid -> RE: GI bleeding, blood in urine and nose bleeds? (11/20/2008 12:23:33 PM)

I thought about the ulcer thing too, I thought I posted that... the testing isnt fun, but it would be best to know for sure.

Edited to add: the malabsorption, not getting nutrients from her food, could also cause anemia. It's just a matter of finding out what, if anything, is causing the malabsorption, whether it be celiac's or something else, and correcting it if possible. The anemia could be a result of intestinal bleeding as well, but she mentioned not digesting food correctly and therefore not absorbing nutrients from it correctly, so the anemia fits with that sympyom, as a result. Most symptoms can belong to a whole host of problems.

Viridana- I'm having a colonoscopy and upper GI on the 26th, I believe those are the tests you are talking about? And I actually wasn't anemic at the time of the GI bleeding (which is weird b/c I'm almost always anemic and have been for years. LOL but I started taking those new Nature Made liquid softgel vitamins and I'm guessing they're working. [:)])

dollparts85 -> RE: GI bleeding, blood in urine and nose bleeds? (11/20/2008 1:32:06 PM)

My whole tummy is sore today...not sure why. The worst is right above the belly button. >.< I took some tylenol and it isn't helping. Maybe it's gas. LOL

I have to ask... are you nervous/embarrassed about the colonoscopy? I've heard it's not bad from ppl who have had it done, but I would be so nervous if it was me. I know that probably doesn't make you feel better... or maybe it does knowing someone else would be scared/nervous/embarrassed about it too.

I'm a bit nervous...but I've known I needed one for a while so I've gotten used to the idea. I'm trying to not be embarrassed b/c I know this doctor does these tests all the time and all so he's not going to be thinking anything bad of me and all. I've already had several doctors sticking their fingers up my bum. haha I'm kinda worried that there will be complications and I'll have to be hospitalized...I hate hospitals. LOL

BlackPhx -> RE: GI bleeding, blood in urine and nose bleeds? (11/20/2008 7:08:56 PM)

Doll...No medical advice from me, but a common sense one. Check with your pharmacist about drug interactions, and include any vitamins and supplements you are taking when you do. Doctors are not always on top of interactions, pharmacists are thanks to their computers. You would be surprised where foods (like grapefruit) and supplements even herbal can have effects. People tend to assume that because it is a vitamin or an herbal supplement it is safe..but that ain't necessarily so.

You may also want to see an endocrinologist and have a full work up including thyroid if it hasn't been done. Bulemia and Anorexia can have long term effects on your endocrine system and even a subtle shift in the hormones can have system wide effects.

Good luck
