If you are putting together a catalog, you might also want to consider doing some quality -basic- long-line-style (post-victorian) corsets, in durable but not fancy fabrics and with sturdy boning meant for actual work-wear under clothing. Much of what is shown is meant for decorative corsetry, and there is very little made for, say, servant-girls, that are meant to be worn under uniforms or for a working woman under suits, to replace less flattering modern body-shaping undergarments -- not fancy, but durable and meant for active work.

Offering a small selection of these at reasonable costs, with durable, not-decorative materials might provide some return customers. I wore my first corset out with daily wear, and it niggled at me to the point where I haven't replaced it, because it bothered me to see such a beautiful garment worn out because I wanted to wear it as a daily garment. Oh... and offering some of the unusual features like spoon-busks for those of us with more generous proportions will endear you to many of us.

Just a thought,
LZ

LadiesBladewing -

I've used spoon busks before - fantastic but expensive seeing as there are not many companies that manufacture them (in Britain at least). They seem to be a very specialist thing. Straight busks seem to work nicely, but of course they don't have quite the same effect.. I'm used to paying about £20 for one (not sure what that is in dollars) which is fine as long as it is reflected in the price I get paid!

In the past (again British history) rich women wore corsets underneath their clothes, but poorer women wore them as outer clothing as they couldn't afford the fancy dresses of the richer class.

You wore your corset out? I suppose they are like any other garment ie they don't last forever, but I make them so robust (depending on the fabrics at least 3 layers) that i can't imagine them falling apart quickly!

I'd thought that the only real market for corsets was decorative outer wear, and I wonder if there is much call for plain, merely functional corsets. If so it would make my life easier!

I'd love to hear back from you - a fellow corset lover is always welcome!

I would love to get one as well...... my pet would pay for it of course. Please let me know.... I am looking for leather.

Might I also ask if you know where one can get leather on the bolt (so to speak) since I can't find the kind of skirt I want I will make it myself if I have the leather.

Anyway.......let me know about the corset!!!!!!!!

HI, Ever think of the Transvestite / drag queen market? those folks will pay inflated costs for things from online. So you could get a decient amount for them in that market if you advertise well enough. Heck I would kill for one myself. Please if you could send me some pics? I could share them around here and see what I can drum up. Good luck which ever direction you go with selling them.

MistressChloes,

Not being a business in anyway, I have to admit I hadn't considered overseas as an option, but then why not!! My main concern is fittings during the making process which would probably be impossible. They are not crucial but I'm a perfectionist and would hate a corset not to fit like a second skin because I couldn't double check the fit! Let me think about it.

As for leather on the bolt, have you tried a fabric wholesalers? I go to a warehouse near me piled high with rolls of everything, and its always cheaper. Leather is hard to work with however - you need a special leather needle for your machine even if it's an industrial machine. I've used fake leathers before and they've worked really well.

Sorry that was so long!!

Since the corsets are custom made ... You might also try joining http://www.etsy.com/ They work the same way ebay does but everything there is handmade, custom made, etc ... Less competition and people are more appreciative of the work that goes into such an item so they'll be more willing to pay what its worth rather than ebay where everyone is looking for the cheapest possible deal.

I know several people who are into corsettry, and one who makes custom corsetts.  And yes, there's a market for them.  It's very specialized and not very big however.  As a custom leatherworker myself, I know how badly people marginalize the value of made to order goods.

But if you're going to demand the highest possible quality, and you don't want a mass produced item, custom is the only way to go.

The one thing I do know about corsets, is that anything less than custom sucks.  Remember, you're providing specialized unique service and people should be prepared to pay for it.

I think, with all this interest, I need to make it clear that I'm not ready yet to start taking orders! This thread was really to put feelers out to see if there was a market, and it seems that that is the case. I am now seriously considering organising myself and making this thing work, but I need to seek out advice first. After all, if its not done to a professional standard its not worth doing!

Saying that, thank you so much to everyone who has replied with suggestions, interest and support. If it weren't for you lot I probably wouldn't bother!

Big Eyes x

Corsets are wanted as custommade, nevermind the price.

The standard size corsets have to be very good if they need to fit people with unusual angles etc.

So go for it.

Kinky regards
