How about bus seats, booths, etc. I had an obese friend that it was so humiliating to go out to eat and not be seated properly. He has since had the surgery... But I am smaller then average size, and I find alot of public seating to be too small. What do you think?

It's wrong to penalise people because of their size. People are all human, only too human and we are not all the same. You should be given as much space as you need, God knows we all pay enough. The airlines make more than enough money.

Here in U.S. i have to buy two seats. Please don't tell me to lose weight. I am addicted to food. I have been through the first liquid diet, weight watchers, medifast, optifast, & counseling. I have asthma among major stomach problems. I have lost my gallbladder due to yo yo dieting. I have had a few suggest gastric bypass but what good is it until i take control of here (points to her head). It won't work unil i figure out what is really bothering me!

As someone not so skinny myself, I think this is a bad idea. I have long legs, it doesn't mean I should be able to sit in first class without paying extra. If you need more room, pay for more room.

If they get less money for flights, because fat people need two seats, then the price per seat will go up. That means that everyone that flies is paying for the extra space.

I am not against "big" folks by any means, so don't take this the wrong way. However......if you are too damn fat to fit in an airline or theater seat, you are too damn fat....period. I remember being stuck next to fat people on planes before they made them buy two seats. I shouldn't be crammed into the wall with the armrest raised because of someone's obesity. If your girth causes embarassment, than lose some weight. Airplanes have weight maximums, not people maximums. It's only fair that someone who is heavier pays more.

If you can't put down the armrest, pay for two seats. the armrests are there as a divider haha Or try first class? They generally have bigger seats. If you're going to use more than other people, pay more. It's like, going out for dinner. If you order soup, and the person you're with orders, I don't know, everything, you shouldn't have to split the bill evenly.

yeah, i think you ought to pay for your space. if you take up two seats, pay for two seats the weight requirements are necessary for calculating fuel and all that other junk =p airlines aren't exactly raking in the dough right now either. alot of them were sitting on the brink of bankruptcy, laying off pilots and staff, tons of strikes and union clashes if you cause the plane to use more fuel than someone else, you should pay for it it's proportional, and fair. i'm not a skinny person. i fit in an airline seat, but if i ever found myself spilling over into another one, i'd just take that into account for my own comfort as well as the people sitting next to me planes are cramped enough as it is man especially on long flights

Hey, if I claim to be obese when I order the ticket, can I get two seats? Aren't I being discriminated against for being HWP if I only get one seat for one fare? If I have to pay $50 if my luggage is one pound over and the next guy gets to bring an extra 100lbs of flesh for free, AND gets extra room for it, I think it's my rights that are being violated. I've been made to pay a full fare for a child under 2, just because I needed to bring a car seat (and, no, my child was not disturbing other passengers. Just another reason to breast feed.....keeps 'em calm and their ears popped), so, two seats- two tickets.

Honestly? this does not need laws. There are a lot of fat people on this contentent, on both sides of the boarder. This is a free market issue. If they want to charge a certain group of their customers more for certain privaledges, let them. If fat people (like me) agree that it's fair, they will pay - if they don't, they won't. Then some company might come along and brag that they don't do that. Very few free market aspects need to be regulated, for real.

So, If I am adicted to Crack, does that mean that I have the right to have people feel sorry for me and I should be allowd to do it where and whenever I want?? Like the song says "Who's your enabler (sp) these days?? My Give a damn's busted" I do feel for anyone with eating problems... God knows that I have enough of them... And I'm not some skinny little twit (not saying all skinny people are twits either by any means) that thinks that fat people are descusting... I'm only 5 foot 3 and over 200 lbs... Yes, I have thyroid problems too, but I also know that it's because I eat too damn much... I think that they should if anything, make the seats smaller.... If you cater to people's needs to be lazy and eat there faces off, that's what they are going to do.... Anyone see Wall-E yet?? It's VERY deep... No really... If you can do EVERYTHING you need to do from sitting in your chair, what the hell is the need to get up?? If the seats, cars, even door ways were smaller, that might give people a REASON to get up and lose some weight... If you're addicted to the food, stay away from it... Do your own grocery shopping.. make a list, and only buy things on the list... Don't keep the bad stuff in the house... That's the same with a Drug addict... My stepfather is a coke and crack addict... If he knows that there's someone around that is doing it, he leaves... He knows that the life he has now is more important to him... Admitting you have a problem is the first step... See a shrink... Get some doctors to help you out... have a friend come and help you get some good eating habits down... (i'm going to have to try these things myself... lol) If this doesn't make sence, Just ignore it... I have a tendancy to do that... lol With respect to everyone..

Well, isn't this interesting! We have had 12 responses and only one thinks that we should share the wealth (or share the space) since the misfortune of another human being is not anything they can help. But I also read that the airlines are making plenty of money so they can afford it. hmmmmmm.... Here is My vote... Any airline passenger who is making more than $250,000 per year will pay an extra surcharge to the airline and then that money will be put into a pot and the obese people who need an extra seat will have one without penalizing any of the people who are making less than that. Sound fair? I find it amazing that when it is something that potentially affects most people in the pocketbook (as in lots of people have the experience of purchasing or needing to purchase an airline ticket on occasion) it becomes so much more personal, and the thinking completely changes.

the ruling tho- sets to challenge other venues. consider that fast food seats are purposely designed so people do not loiter. we have a higher % of obese today then 20 years ago. I attribute that to high fruitose corn syrup, and processed foods... so the reality is folks weigh more today- most everyone ... so what to do with it public policy-wise. bus seats, DR WAITING room seats, diner seats, and so on. high fructose corn syrup is chemically synthesized, the body can not entirely digest the chemistry modified item. add that to the fact that many drink soda instead of water. (even diet- sorry )

Wondering why you are apologizing? You are absolutely, right, Pahunk... This was a Candian High Court Decision that has taken the freedom away from Canadian Airlines to make their own policy regarding how to charge for space on their planes. And Methinks could be just the beginning...Who or what will be next????? Muwahahaha... As to overweight, obesity or morbid obesity, I have My own opinions about it. Little is bad for people in moderation. We are no longer a society of moderation. Or self-discipline.

Planes are designed to get as many people as possible, into a restricted amount of space. It comes down to cost effectiveness. If planes can't afford to take off with all of their seats 'filled' but only a portion of them paid for - then everyone is effected, because either the airline goes out of business, or everyone pays higher prices to fly. I think that providing respectful service that does not insult and embarass ones customers, and realistic compromises that provide discounted space, make for a better business sense. Legislative interference that takes away a business' ability to cost effectively run their business, doesn't.

Still, they are willing to pay that if they can afford it for the additonal comfort and convenience it offers. I do not see anyone saying that they should take some of the extra profits from the "first class" or "business class" passengers to give away additional seats for overweight passengers flying in coach. All I saw was an immediate call to arms about how this was "unfair". I don't feel it is ill thought at all. It is just a smaller example of the larger picture.
