The nasal wash I have came with a special bottle
to push the water through.
It feels like well...having water up your nose,LOL

I have to admit I'm fascinated by the fact that the water
goes in one side of the nose and comes out the other side.
While its not exactly a pleasant feeling,it really helps.It is
also great to use when you have a sinus infection.
I always feel so much better after.

I'll do anything that helps.

Delilah,
thanks for the very good, practical suggestions. The fact that they come from a fellow sufferer makes a lot of difference. But I still won't have a cat in my house - just not worth it.

I would recommend going to your family doctor and getting tested. Allergy tests have changed and now they can do Allergy testing from a blood sample instead of the dreaded pin prick testing. The blood test will reveal your level of reaction from low, med, high, and extreme. From this point you can make a decision. IE a medium reaction you might be able to live with versus and extreme reaction you cannot not. I would call your doctor to see if he offer this service.

My master has several severe allergies, including nuts and fish. Aswell as fury friends, however these just cause mild reactions it is still a problem.

I am a huge animal lover so its tough knowing i might not to be able to have a cat with M but being with him makes up for it.

looks like fish for me..

I am extremely allergic to most cats. Within two hours of entering a house with cats my eyes start to itch uncontrollably. Yet my The Man's daughter's cat has been here since September with no problem. I do tend to be rather stuffed up in the morning so take one Claritin daily.

Beyond that, keep the cat out of the bedroom, use the cat allergy wipes on them, always wash hands right after petting, wash bed clothes, mattress pad etc in hot water. And reduce every other form of allergin. Get the anti allergy mattress covers, pillow covers, replace wall to wall with rugs that can be machine washed. Vacuum floors and upholstery preferably daily and while wearing a dust mask.

I have found the it depends on the type of cat.

An ex had a Maine Coon that wasn't allowed in the bedroom and as long as we cleaned regularly I was fine.

I have stayed and looked after half a dozen Burmese cats for a fortnight for a friend and was fine with them.

Have walked in to other houses with other breeds of cat and started wheezing straight away and had my eyes watering badly.

Not sure of the lessons but it does demonstrate the range of issues.

I'm allergic to horses, cattle, hay, dogs, cats, birds, and I keep an assortment of all of them.

Zyrtec works great but makes me sleepy all day, so I gave it up.

I've found loratidine works wonders, I take it every night.

There is a spray you can spray the cat with - seriously - made by Allerpet I think, that helps a great deal, too. Ask your vet about it or see if you can order it online, it actually stops the dander from affecting the patient by sealing off the protein coats of the dander molecules. Better living through chemistry. Amazing stuff.

If it's a child in the home having asthmatic or anaphylactic reactions I'd get rid of the cat. If you're dealing with mild symptoms try the desensitization shots and or the histamine blockers. Rhinocort will stop a lot of allergies from affecting one, too.

My allergist tells me there's a new experimental injection that is targeted to reconfigure the genetic markers that cause allergies - one of these days we'll have a cure for that.

Zyrtec also makes me sleepy. I usually cut it in half (I take it every day, along with Singulair). On bad allergy days I will take 1/2 pill every 12 hours.

I recently met a very nice Dom, it actually turned out we had met years ago. On the first date, I mentioned that I was allergic to cats. Within 48 hours, he sent me an email to the effect that in the long term, if our relationship worked out, I should consider getting shots from the homeopath.

Ummm, I understand how people feel about companion animals. But if I were to get serious with a man, to the point that marriage was an option, I would expect that those animals would have to be given to a new home. I have asthma too, and have had to wash the body of a dear friend who died of an asthmatic attack. That friend had wall - to - wall carpeting, although she knew it was bad for her asthma. Why would I deliberately go around a cat if I know that it is bad for me? For my other friends to wash *my* body?

And whoever places his cat situation above the chance of having a loving relationship, that's his choice, but I want no parts of it.

Hmmmm O.o

Okay. I give up. Why would you ever want to be with someone who would treat an animal that is under their care in such a way? Would you expect them to get rid of you and give you to a new home if they got a cat?

I am NOT an animal person but the bond is one I respect. Think about the post and ask yourself how comfortable you would be in that situation. Everytime you passes an Animal Shelter you might be finding a new home under that logic.
