My sub Alexis has been DXed with diabetes and hypertension recently.  Besides ensuring that she eat right, takes her meds and walks every day, I want to know more of what to do, especially whenit comes to having a play session.  Frankly, I am scared to punish her for any infractions (she loves being paddled a lot) and hurting her.

How do others deal with being a diabetic and engaging in rough play sessions?  Luckily I don't wield whips and my flogger is MIA due to a move  and Alexis is not into knife play (I am though).

I have a couple of folks that I play with casually who have diabetes.  It really isn't that big of a deal that you have to make major adjustments.  Along with other pre-scene info, you ask if they have taken care of themselves that day with healthy food.  Know that they are taking care of themselves before playing.  Have juice on hand if it's an overload.  I carry sugar free candy for them for after the scene, just so they can have a special treat afterwards.  They love Me for it because they know that I was thinking of them.  I have one that just loves sugar free butterscotch hard candies.

The most important thing is to not let it stand in the way.  Play with your sub.  Show alexisis that this diagnosis doesn't change what you have.  You'll have adjustments, but so what?  It's not that much different than any other stipulation.

My best wishes to you both.

I am a Type 2 Diabetic, I take Pills to Regulate My Blood Sugar and Diet and Count Carbs

If you want to be safe there is something easy that you can do.

Purchase your own BGL Monitor (Blood/Glucose Monitor) a Package of 25 test strips and 100 Lancets, This will Cost you anywhere from $75.00 to $250.00 depending on the model you choose.

Have your Sub take thier BGL before you play and an hour after you have finished this way you will always know where they are. Good Sugar Levels are between 70 and 90 however Many Diabetics live will in the 80 to 110 range. Anything over 150 is high and you may want to take them for a walk after you play. Anything under 70 is Low and you may want to invest in getting Glucose Tabs or just carrying Mints like Lifesaver Mints in with you, Two of them will get enough Sugar into them to get them okay long enough to take another BGL Reading in 20 mins.

Diabetes is NOT something that anyone other than the person who has it should alter thier lives around. Diabetes is just a matter of Health and Diet affecting the way the Pancreas Produces Glucose in the body.

As for Beating, unless you are doing Bastinado I don't think you need to worry. Diabetics get Bad Circulation in the Feet so Bastinado (The Beating of the Feet) is VERY dangerous for Diabetics as it can lead to amputation as the internal wounds do not real as well. So Diabetics need to keep good care of their feet that is one thing to keep in mind.

There are some forms of restricting Bondage that can also be dangerous to Diabetics so keep away from suspension Bondage when it comes to diabetics. If they are overweight you may want to know thier Cholesterol Level on a regular basis because bondage can move blockages when circulation is returned and that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

If you really want to know what you can and cannot do then you should really talk to the doctor who diagnosed the issue and express yourt concern.

Also Web MD has a LOT of good info when it comes to diabetics.

Happy Hunting

Steel

I'm type 1, with a lot of complications that 20 years of that leads to, and suspension is one of our favourite things to do. The weight of my body isn't borne on wrists or ankles or other parts that have poor circulation, and when those parts are bound, he makes sure to check on their state constantly (temp, colour, having me squeeze his hand).

Just sayin'.

Steel did a great job of discussing this.  If she is newly diagnosed, her sugars may not be very stable, and she may not "know" when she is headed low (the more dangerous immediate issue.  Going "high" does long term damage to blood vessels in eyes and kidneys, etc., but going low can leave her in a coma).  So I would only add that the first couple times you play, you may want to actually test DURING play at some point, just to see where the sugars are and gauge whether the stress of it is taking the sugars up or down.  Stress does different things to different people...but insulin is a hormone, so everything we do probably impacts that as well.

It might also be wise to have cake gel (the kind you write on top of a cake with) on hand in your emergency kit...if she passes out and cannot suck on a mint, you can squirt it into her mouth.

Glad to see that you are not letting the diagnosis change her life too much.  It doesn't have to, as long as you take precautions.

Good luck to you both!

Also- be prepared and ready to deal with it if she gets low enough to be in a diabetic coma. As a newly diagnosed sub, if she's really bad, she might get dangerously low, and then a few hours of the rather strenuous activity of play could tilt her over the edge between bad low and dangerous low. Know how to work the glucometer, and keep a stock of syrup or honey or something on hand to treat it.

Edited to add: Ex has type 1, so I did my research about this.

I do appreciate all the answers.  We got several blood sugar monitors from friends already and so far, I have been watching her to make sure nothing bad happens.  Her blood sugar has been pretty good, I make sure she eats small meals and we have been walking every day when it is not freezing.  As a treat I got her some lowfat yogurt instead of ice cream.

Now if I can keep her away from dessert bars, she can lose more weight...LOL!

Actually..... be careful of "lowfat", which often means "lots of sugar to make up for the lack of tasty fat". or something like that. ;-)
The thing to look for is Low/no sugar and LOW CARBS since the carbs break down into sugars.   Lower fat is often compensated by high sodium and higher sugar.

Start comparing labels, and you'll see what I mean.  When in doubt, go for the lower carb option, which is usuallay also the lower sugar option.
