Claritin makes me physically ill when I take it (don't know why)

Is it just wine, or all alcohol? Is there any other food I should know about that has iodine in it?

That sounds really interesting! I'll have to go buy some aspirin and more rubbing alcohol XD My bottle's almost empty.

Hmmm, if it is then it's caused by multiple types of food.

And becomes much more severe (and happens more often) when I don't eat, which is why my doctor ruled out food, especially, as a cause. Eating (especially a hearty meal with my medicines) helps to relieve the hives.

Stress? My partner gets hives (collections of them on different body parts) when under stress. I brought him to my homeopatist (spelling?) and she sorted him out in one session.

My sister has the same problem (I had to check and make sure you weren't my sister). She has chronic hives that the doctor thinks might be caused by minor allergies, but they can't pinpoint it, so they give her allergy shots with a cocktail of everything she showed even a minor reaction to on her allergy screening. I'm not sure if you reacted to something, just a little bit, but these shots seem to help her. The problem is that giving people shots is apparantly controversial-only a few doctors will even consider giving the shots for such a dubious allergy. I suggest that you find another doctor-they might offer a different treatment that might work for you.

Do it. Seriously... all it requires is a simple blood test, t3 & t4. You'll know in a number of days. If your levels are fine... then ya know you can rule that out. I also have to agree with TexasMaam on the rubbing alcohol thing (although I never knew the aspirin trick though.) Its my saving grace sometimes... I use a cheapy spray bottle for easy application.

for many years I had stress induced hives. And yeah.. dec can bring that out, I hate the whole month. But because mine are stress related I can will them into managable levels. I can't completely contain them though.
What I do is turn the itch off so it wont get worse.
I use very hot water, painfully hot, dip a towel end into it and dab onto my skin where the hives are. It hurts like hell! I only touch them on and off for a second at a time. But once the nerve endings are pushed to extremes, they sort of fade away.
I have heard cold works equally well, but.. lol I do have this pain thing.
Good luck. And try aveeno, or an oatmeal bath.

My mother used to get them only in winter. Turned out to be a reaction to sunlight combined with cold. Summer sun, no problem, cold cloudy day no problem - but have a nice sunny winter day and she was in misery. If she had to go out on such days, all exposed skin was first covered with vaseline. Icky but effective.

Probably because when I saw him I was scared and whimpering like a hurt puppy with hives around my left eye so bad that it was swollen shut... I'll give his office a call and ask them to order bloodwork so that I can go get it drawn this week at the hospital, though, since it's completely covered under my insurance (finally! A saving grace with this insurance! Yeesh!)

Stress is a factor but, as I said, not a likely cause.

Hah, no! I'm male, or as close as is possible :P The doctor had mentioned shots as a possible treatment, but I vetoed it (I would rather have hives every day of my life than get continuous shots). The only reason why he suggested it is because they interefer with my livelihood (as a music student I'm *required* to perform, not to mention that, as a teacher in the future I'll need to be, you know, presentable).

EEP! I'm glad that, currently, that's not even a thought! It was happening in warm weather (70s), too. I sure hope that isn't a cause :(

Wish I could help you out with a remedy. I have suffered from hives my whole life, they have gotten better as I have gotten older. Used to swell up so much I couldn't bend my fingers. I have tried many of the drugs listed and have found that zyrtec everyday keeps them at bay, (I take mine at night because it makes me sleepy).
Something to try to help with the pain and itch is to take a bath in arm & hammer baking soda. Just sprinkly maybe a cup or two in the water, don't know why but this always seem to give relief if only for a half a day or so. Good luck and hope you find some answers.

this is intresting.. well to me at least cuz i'm allergic to benadryl it gives me hives and for several years my doc warned me about high stress and high anxiety as it could cause me to break out with hives... thankfully that never happened.. but as i learned what gave me hives the hard way i know how you feel and what you're going thru.... its horrid to have hives... altho the meds the doc gave me did wonders for the pain and the itching... ... just remebered the day my knees wouldn't work cuz of the hives .. i couldn't walk.. my dad had to come get me and tote me... that was scary....

Just wanted to throw this one out---I broke out in hives while pregnant with each of my children. Terrible cases--in my hair down to in between my toes.

My allergen????? Testosterone. My current doc figured it out--and ran a specific test. I'd break out in the hives when the babies would begin producing their own hormones (I had 3 boys!).

Allergens are not always something EXTERNAL--but can be because something is off internally.

That's all well and good, the main problem is that, despite taking an extraordinary amount of anti-histamines (in addition to the ones I'm prescribed daily, I'm also taking the max dose of my 'emergency' ones almost daily as well) I'm *still* getting them, and they're BAD.

I pretty much gobble a handful when I have to. Those instructions about weaning off it? I just ignore that stuff. It does the job, thank goodness. I take atarax for the itchy ones, and aside from the coma-level sleep, it works great.

Good luck, this has got to be one of the most annoying ailments EVAR!

Yeah, the lips thing is annoying. :P Can't really play a brass instrument when your lips are that big. Dunno how Angelina deals with them, they get in the way so much!

I hate to suggest this, but is he sure it isn't lupus? Because when you have unexplained symptoms probably stemming from an auto immune disorder, lupus usually is the disorder in question.

Most go by a blood test, ANA test but there is not a single definitive test for it. Usually if a persons ANA level is at a particular and constant level.. Lupus 'may' be the cause. I'm told that I have Lupus and it took nearly 15 years for that diagnosis. Personally I doubt you have Lupus especially since hives are your only problem.
