Someone asked what type of whip to buy for a singletail newbie. In my opinion there are some great whipmakers out there, but for your first whip, while you still need good quality, you don't need antyhing all that fancy. I'd go to Happy Tails at www.flogger.com and look for a 4' braided signal whip. The quality of their work is great, they are great community people who stand behind their work, and they've been around for long enough that this is a pretty widely held opinion. Their prices are reasonable. So, you're not going to look like Johnny Super-Top with a short 4' whip, but it has several advantages over 6' and longer whips. #1, it's easier to learn. Shorter is easier to control, and while you can still do considerable damage, it's less dangerous than longer whips. #2, it's easier to use in a dungeon or play setting (like you bedroom). It really doesn't take up more room than a flogger, indeed, you can use the same strokes and patterns. #3, it lets you be within touching distance of your partner. With a longer whip you have to stand far enough back that if you want to hear your partner, or touch her, you have to stop your pattern and come closer. A shorter whip just has you closer in in the first place. #4, it's cheaper than a longer whip. If you're not sure that you want to spend a lot of time with this toy, it makes sense to start smaller and decide to buy another once you're sure this is in your realm if interest. Once it is, sure it's possible you may regret having spent the money on this shorter one, but I doubt it. All the advantages make it a great toy to have in your bag. #5, it rolls up into a nice little coil that can fit in your back pocket of your jeans/chaps/leathers. #6, You can still crack it and look cool! Don't get a spiral or wound whip. Always get braided. One point is true about this kind of whip... it doesn't have a cracker. This means that sooner or later the end will start to decay and unravel. However if you take care of it, it can last a long time. I'm on 7 years with my last signal whip and I use it a LOT. Hopefully this helps, good luck, Torque.
