we celebrate Christmas as the birthday of Jesus first (complete with a birthday cake/candles to bring the point home to the children) and the Santa aspect after that.

We believe in it because it is a wonderful time to have a party and do what I enjoy - give gifts. I'm a terrible gift getter, but I really enjoy seeing people open presents and get; "just what I wanted!"

We celebrate it as we do any opportunity to have a great time with friends and family. I've just about completed making my Italian Christmas cookies, I would have been done, but the peanut butter chocolate kisses & jelly seem to have evaporated in the last week and need replenishment. We have an 'open house' on the generally given work holiday and invite a wide diversity of people. We've ordered a good bit of food to accommodate everyone's tastes from vegan and vegetarian to carnivore and meatitarian. Nobody is required to work cooking, even beth, and there is no 'set time'. I always hated the days of going to one place and not being able to enjoy myself because I had to keep looking at my watch to see if I was still on schedule to visit Aunt Theressa, Uncle Pat, or get to be at Aunt Gloria's in time for the turkey carving.

Although the occasion of the winter solstice occurs when the climate makes dancing outdoors naked a bit more frantic, the chilling effect on beth's nipples is quite enchanting. On Wednesday night and Thursday they're predicting chilly temperatures down in the 50's (BRRRRRRR) but as long as the rain hold off, our tradition of singing holiday songs, drinking eggnog and hot toddies, while floating in the heated pool and hot tub will continue.

No matter how a religion, or special interest, tries to hijack a holiday, any excuse to party should looked forward to and enjoyed.

Speaking of hot toddy recipes; I found a great one that I tested at our Thanksgiving event. Apple cider, anise stars, whole clove, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and....wait for it.....Single Malt Scotch! Put it on the stove, get it to boil, remove and let sit for at least a couple hours. When ready to serve heat up and bring the mug over to the hot tub.

Hope everyone had a good Solstice yesterday; has enough oil in the lamp for the opening of Hanukkah today; celebrates the Nicaean counsel designated day for Christ's birth; our British empire friend have enough Boxes for Friday, and our academic social inclusiaries enjoy the harvest celebration of Kwanzaa, which also begins on Friday!

It's a party people! Life is too short and gets shorter by a day, every day! Lighten up & ENJOY!
Happy Holiday to ALL!

I am not a Christian at all, but I respect the Man as one of the greatest philosophers of all time, even though he seemingly never wrote a word. If there is any accuracy in the accounts, I put forth now that if everyone lived by his tenets, the world would be a near utopia. People beating their swords into plowshares and such. A great dream, but not reality.

The fact is that in another place and time the teachings of Joshua BAR Joseph would be perfection. We would turn the other cheeck in fun and games, not in battle, which of course would be foolhardy to say the least. But how did the battle start ?

I will not call myself a Christian because I will not accept nor condone universal forgiveness. People need to pay for their misdeeds and that is that, however I do admit that if everyone really followed his tenets, there would not be much need for forgiveness would there ?

There is talk of a feeling of christianity, if so why is there a special day ? If I am driving along and see a car broke down and a guy standing there in a nice suit talking on the cellphone, I would drive on by. If I saw a little old Lady standing there looking at a flat tire I would probably stop.

I have a strict rule, I will neither give nor recieve gifts on Christmas or anyone's birthday. Any other day is fine. If you are in my chosen family you get gifts two ways, one is that I see something somewhere and say to myself "Now this is ______", and you get it randomley, the next time I see you. Another way is if you are checking out something like in my house or something and say "That is really nice", sometimes I will say "It's your's".

One other way is just to ask, and I had that happen not too long ago and said no. An argument ensued about whom it held more sentimental value for, which was a civil argument, but in the end I declined to give the item up. No hard feelings and it has not been mentioned since.

We do give things to each other. My buddy brought me a Tascam four track recorder out of the blue on one sunny April day. He and his olady are quite good second hand store combers.

I don't get mushy about things, but that "Christmas spirit" belongs in your "heart" every day, not just one day a year.

Thus my inclusion in the 21% who do not celebrate Christmas at all.

T

Question:
will you celebrate Christmas this Thursday as a religious holiday honoring the birth of Jesus Christ?

We are a mixed faith Household.  Sir refers to Himself as "somewhat Buddhist".  My background is Christian, though I don't practice it as I should.  My heart and mind celebrates the birth of Christ, even though I know He wasn't born at this time of year.  Easter is more relevant as a Christian holiday to me.

ETA: "mind" b/c my fingers forgot to type it

Fuck that Happy Holliday-I-gotta-include-everybody-as-to-offend-nobody bullshit.

I Say Merry Christmas. Not because of Christs Birth because as has been pointed out in the Star was seen it would have had to have been Mid March to Mid April and for it to be the Brightest star in the sky it would have had to have been March 28 to april 2nd as have been Proven by astromomers for decades.

If I say Merry Christmas to you and you celebrate Chuakuhauacha SAY Happy Chakuanauachaunancha. To Me. I REALLY DON'T CARE.

If you celebrate Yule or Kazamm or Get Drunk and Fuck a Sheep Day I don't give a shit. We all know what the meaning is right?

It's about the season of Stress and Grown women beating the ever living shit out of each other for crap the US Bought from China and then mark it up 327% to cover the loss they will take for the other 11 months of the year.

As for What Christmas is about..... For me I celebrate a day of Joy for my fellow man. I try to say Merry Christmas to every soul I see because having it said to me makes me smile. If having Merry Christmas said to you causes you to try to have legislation passed so that no child in school is allowed to say it then you need to get your fucking head checked.

As for me, I'm Jolly and Fat and I eat Haggis, so If you cant enjoy this holliday regardless of what it is called by your fellow man the I'll just have to lift my Happy ass onto your Chimeny and give the kids a real precent for the holiday of your choice this year.

Merry F-ing Chrictmas and a Happy Blow Job this Year.

Oi Oi Oi Oi

Same here pretty much Stella . Whats most curious to me is that to be "christian" and celebrate christmas means stealing all the best bits from other cultures and faiths then pretending its your own . I'm not knocking the fact that christmas is not about fun if your'e a devout christian , and I fully respect peoples right to worship as they choose . It does , however , annoy me when "christians" assume that by me stuffing my face and drinking vast quantities of Somerset's finest whilst I'm being particularly hospitable towards folk who happen by has anything at all to do with chrismas (which is as you so rightly point out not actually celebrated at the time of Jesus' birth) (seems like he was a decent chap to me too) . Anyway , if any "christians" happen by during the festive season , I shall be more than welcoming and share with them some traditional ancient seasonal cheer.

(And some traditional , seasonal liquid refreshment)

No. Christmas has been ripped off from the Pagans; it used to be called the Saturnalia, the celebration of the winter soltice. The early Christians took it for their own because it made it easier to convey their message by superimposing the 'birth of Christ' with the Pagans' holiday (thus confusing them happily with garishly decorated trees and cheap shit from Walmart). Some people estimate Yeshoua was probably born around the middle of September.

Thirdly... Is Santa Claus God? They look remarkably similar: they both have beards, loud booming voices, asexual creatures work for them both (the angels and the elfs), and they both have digs up in the sky, and they do what you ask if you believe in them hard enough. I think we should be told.

But a ton of presents never goes amiss in my book  . Bring them on, baby!

We are pagan--Druid and Wiccan-- and celebrate the Solstice. I do have a tree with natural ornaments on it--birds and cranberries and such. However, I am not a shopper; I can't handle the fighting and rude crowds along with the distressed clerks. So we simply spend it with one another and enjoy our limited time together before he goes back out on the road.

Sage.

I celebrate Christmas because people tend to be better people around Christmas.  Not because we chose it as Christ's birth.  Since it is so easy to find out Christ was born in the summer month's.  Just nothing to support him being born in December.

A miracle happened to me one Christmas...so to me there is some magic this time of year.

Other people here have made me want to add some other points. I am unashamedly in love with this time of year, I bake, paint my own cards, make decorations, give to charity, sing songs, all the things that I wish i could do the rest of the year except that stuff always seems to get in the way. Christmas is a break from normal life. But I dont really mean christmas now do I. This is a time of year when there are many religious celebrations, possibly a time when more coincide than any other time. There is magic in the air across the world. I am not religious for my own reasons but there is something deeply moving about this time, not because of someones birth or because the days get longer, its not as tangible as that its just magic.

I hope people have a wonderful time whatever reason they have for celebrating it, even if only because its a day off work.

I agree with Termyn8or,
There have been many great spiritual leaders, sages and prophets. But i am not about to accept anyone man as my savior as there are a great many that have contributed with lessons to make all our lives better.
When Christmas comes, its not just Jesus that I am thankful for but all those that came before him and the few that have come after him.
They all should be remembered for having been born to the world.

Merry Meet and Festive Cheer in this time of Giving.
