It is almost unbelievable that this got as far as it did. It is amazing how utterly stupid people can be and what they will believe. The story in the link tells it all.....

Crap, does that mean I have to return the outhouse I picked up?

Lucylastic -> RE: Craigslist Crime (12/31/2008 7:35:52 AM)

I'm thinking the same thing.  This is probably someone getting revenge for some slight, real or imagined.  Clever - but still shitty.  I hope they catch the dickhead and the homeowner gets to sue the shit out of him.

Were they really stupid, or did they hypothesize that the ad had given them a license to steal... or at least a get-out-of-jail-free card?

Only if he got a good look at your license plate as you were driving away. Otherwise throw a new coat of paint on it and you are good to go.

I can't think of anything clever to say here ..

LadyTeazer -> RE: Craigslist Crime (12/31/2008 7:59:13 AM)

Yup.  Sounds like he really honked off somebody....  I hope they are able to trace the person who placed the ad, and prosecute the heck out of 'em.

As for the people who responded to that ad,  it makes me wonder 'why' they had a copy of that ad in hand?  Could it be because they knew what they were doing was wrong (or at the very least, highly suspicious), and having the ad as "proof" made it all OK to steal?

This incident reminds me of my favorite quote --
"Only two things are infinite - the Universe, and human stupidity.  And I'm not so sure about the Universe."   ~Albert Einstein~

In the UK recently a 15 year old girl posted details of her 16th birthday party on Facebook. She posted the details of the party being held at her home openly on the site. The details were seen by a group of "professional gatecrashers" who arrived at the party and completely trashed the house causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

The worst bit is that the daughter thinks the whole thing is great as she seen to be really cool to her schoolfriends and she has said she has no regrets and would do it again.

Makes me kinda glad my brother is as much of an idiot as he is - and is to stupid to figure out how to use something like Craigslist.  This is just the sort of stunt he would pull, if he had the mental capacity to think of it and had any sure way of knowing when I was going to be gone for a couple of days.  (of course, things like this are also why I Always have a friend stay at my place to keep an eye on things if I'm going out of town - just to make sure my brother doesn't break in and trash the place or steal everything!)

Raechard -> RE: Craigslist Crime (12/31/2008 12:08:54 PM)

How did they gain access to the property? It's one thing to say you were told something fictitious, it's quite another to turn up and force entry.

I wonder if he made and insurance claim for something?

awmslave -> RE: Craigslist Crime (12/31/2008 12:29:37 PM)

Somebody may play this trick to his/her ex.

BlackPhx -> RE: Craigslist Crime (12/31/2008 1:59:58 PM)

This is not the worse thing that has happened believe it or not. He at least can be reimbursed by his insurance company. Currently scammers are listing houses in foreclosure on craigslist as rentals..collecting first and last and in some cases handing over a key ( having had the door re-keyed) and the renters are none the wiser until  listing agent or the police come around. http://www.davickservices.com/fake_landlords_rent.htm that "bargain" is no Bargain for those desperate for a rental.

Now that is just disgusting, using a child that way.
Even placing such an ad online for a babysitter. The individual needs their head examined as it is already known there are predators online. Just fortunate something worst did not happen to the child.

khalya -> RE: Craigslist Crime (12/31/2008 5:20:53 PM)

I was seriously going to place an ad on Craigslist like that. I am moving in July, and I can only take like a backpack and a suitcase with me. I was going to post that people could come and take everything they wanted, so that I could get rid of everything in my apartment.
