bamabbwsub -> Had to euthanize my cat today... (1/6/2009 8:42:27 PM)

I had to euthanize one of my sweet kitties today.  His name was Sebastian, and he was an old, old man (over 20 years old, although no one knew exactly how old he was).  I had him less than a year, after his family abandoned him when they moved, in the middle of January, outside.  (Assholes.)  One of their neighbors called a rescue group, who called me, and he got to live with me as an indoor kitty -- always warm, safe, dry, and well-fed -- until the end.

Although I know that I did the right thing for him -- he was old, feeble, extremely thin, and was in renal failure -- it still hurts.  Oddly enough, I suffered more while trying to make the decision to euthanize him, trying to make sure that it was really time for him to go.  I HATE playing God.  But in my heart, I knew it was time, especially after watching him go downhill for the past few days.

I was lucky in that we have a mobile vet who was able to come to my house today to put him to sleep, so he didn't have to endure a car ride, and didn't have to be taken to a place that was unfamiliar and scary.  He died at home, peacefully, with me loving on him until he took his final breath.

Rest in peace, Sebastian.  I love you and miss you.

I'm so sorry. It can be very painful losing a pet and you've my sympathies.

Thank you, Camille.

In time, I'll look back upon my time with him with fond memories and less pain -- but for now, it hurts like hell.

{{hugs}}
Of course it hurts right now, but I'm glad you have happy memories of him!

My BarneyCat turns 21 this Feb and I know I'm going to eventually lose her, hard to think about yet when she goes wobbly legged or stiff when moving I do think about it. Sigh. Pets can be such bittersweet love.

Bless your heart.  You took him in and gave him loved, and allowed him to pass on peacefully, with his final year very likely his best. I've only had my little guy for 6 months and he's the love of my life.  I can only imagine how you feel.   Big hugs to you.

I am so sorry for you. It is so hard to have to do that, but I believe Sebastian is at peace now. Remember him well.

I am a first time cat mom. I have had mine for only a year. They both bring me laughter, tears, & cheer me up when i am blue. I hate to think how i will be when it is their time.

My condolences to you on your loss. You are a treasure for giving that cat a home, food to eat, love and support even to the end. I think he knows how special you are and he was special to you. He is in no more pain and is off somewhere running after birds and climbing trees. God bless..

Lashra -> RE: Had to euthanize my cat today... (1/6/2009 9:20:28 PM)

My sincerest condolences on the passing of your cat. I adopted a maine coon kitten back in July and I have to tell you he is one of the brightest lights in my life. I hope to have him around a very long time.

You did the humane thing and he got to pass peacefully, and that is the best way to go with someone that you love nearby.

Awe... that sucks. :( Kitty and I send hugs.

It"s hard to do, deciding when the right time is to go. For mine, it was after he developed a tumor in his sinuses that was trying to block off his airway. I'd cook fish and hamburgers and things for him every night just so he'd eat. :(

At least you can know you made his last year wonderful.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Had to euthanize my cat today... (1/6/2009 10:26:53 PM)

The Gang (Merlin, Stormie, and Fritz) and I all send a meow and virtual hugs.  I know - far to well - how hard it is to make that decision for our furry family members.  I had to do so for Griz, my dad's almost 16 yr old dog, in July.  It's still a very fresh memory.

You gave him a good life for his final year, and allowed him to die with dignity and love.  That enriched his life, and no doubt blessed yours as well.

I am so sorry to hear that. I have cats and dogs myself and know how painful it can be to let them go.

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: Had to euthanize my cat today... (1/6/2009 10:47:52 PM)

I am so sorry for your loss.  I went through a similar decision with a cat I owned a while back and know how very hard it is.  I'm glad to hear he got to live with you as an indoor kitty until the end.

so sorry, had to put My best friend of 15 years down last year, I still miss her. I know she is waiting for Me at the Rainbow Bridge............

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Be Blessed..MZ E

Anyone who has ever experienced the gift of total love and commitment you get a pet can relate to the pain you are feeling.  There is really something special about the bond that develops between us.  I'm very sorry for your loss and have had to do the same thing with some wonderful friends.  You can take a lot of solace, however, knowing that you gave Sebastian probably the best year of his life.  I think animals know when it is time for them to pass and if he could talk he would probably have said thank you...thank you for kindness...thank you for your love.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It's a terribly difficult thing to do. You have my sympathies.

T1981 -> RE: Had to euthanize my cat today... (1/7/2009 5:50:30 AM)

I'm so sorry, losing a pet is sometimes harder than losing a human friend. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you today. And the Rainbow Bridge is a bueatiful poem, it has helped me move through grief, too.
