So why dosent your country do what Americans do. Put it up for a vote.

There's no public pressure to pass such law. Should Americans have a vote on whether or not to nail their stones to the ceiling?

Edited to add:

England is as moderate a place as you'll find. In our minds, guns are an extreme means of resolving differences. Put simply, this is a country that detests extremism.

Although to be fair, England isn't Britain, and Britain isn't the 'United' Kingdom.

When it comes to fairness, you're in a league of your own, Kittin.

Sorry, Aneirin - I wasn't sure whether you meant to write it like that or not, but it certainly was appropriate and it made me laugh. I wasn't making fun of your experience: I apologise if it came across that way.

No worries at all Kittin, it was intended as directed at this person, and I have disrespected the law before by saying cuntstable instead of constable and orificer instead of officer, I can get away with it with this newly aquire west country twang.

P.s., you are nothing like what I thought you were like when I perved your profile.

How much choice do you fell you would have in a place with no democracy, such as China ?  My point still stands that we have collectively decided to have a ban on handguns. Your analogy makes no sense, are you saying there should be no restrictions. That people can drink drive no matter who they endanger ? It seems to me that with no democracy the individual has far less choice. Neither sytem may be perfect but democracy is the better. You could twist yout last statement on its head, and say that you have the freedom to keep your children safe by banning guns, or the freedom to imperil them.

I would feel I would have as much choice in a place with no democracy as I would in a place with a democracy. my views are just as hampered in both places. in china, it would be hampered by a totalitarian government. in america, it would be hampered by the fact it's in the minority.

and again, you have not collectively decided to ban handguns...as there are plenty of individuals who would rather have hand guns.

and yes, I think there should be no restrictions (except those placed by individuals who own the private property)...but my political philosophy is more than a little rare and would take too much time to explain. I'll just say this, the initiation of force is unexceptable...even if a government does it.

Hmm, your argument is full of holes.

not quite.

quote:

The first option takes away the choice to not have your society dominated or in some way compromised by that object.  Where's the freedom of choice in getting shot in the back by some wacko who's decided to go on a killing spree with the guns he got from Wallmart?  Granted, the majority of people can get it wrong (like with prop 8).  But gay marriage in no way inflicts upon my rights as an individual, or the freedom or safety of society as a whole.  A lack of gun control absolutely does infringe upon those things.  And the fact that the UK has avoided repeating the horrible Dunblane tragedy is powerful.

this whole argument reeks of 'freedom is not worth anything if you aren't safe.' what you are saying is that freedom is no good if you can die at any moment.

give me a break.

There are, really? I'd be fascinated to see a survey of these numerous individuals. Perhaps you ought to join Popeye in bringing the good word over to the other side of the Atlantic. It's obvious that the British population is a mistaken lot. No doubt your powers of persuasion will do the trick :-) .

Hey, colouredin... I feel your pain. I honestly don't think they'll ever get it, though .

I never will understand the urge to have a monolithic government put its arms around you, hold you tight, and make all your decisions for you. I prefer liberty over security...but that's just me. perhaps a european or a sub/slave could explain this impulse to me?

Why yes DomKen I have met the "common man", they're all around here!
Engineers, Steelworkers, Teachers, Retired Military, (Me) Police and Correction Officers, Business owners, Computer Techs, Retired Arbitrage Bankers, a lady who rides horses in Dolly Parton's wild west show, and that's just in these condos that I live in!
I read that "Sir Winston" would actually tell his "servants" that he was,..."a Great Man."
Seems he had a bit of an ego problem.

I've met them, too. I'd rather not have them make decisions for me. I'd also rather not have 'uncommon' men make my decisions for me. I hope that's not too much to ask.

Precisely: we're all slaves and lowly submissives over there. That's why we LOVE being spanked by our governments. HOT.

Ok but what if said slasher had a gun. Would he have killed more people? Quicker to use a gun than a knife.

having a gun doesn't make you bullet proof. yeah, if he had a gun he could've killed more kids. yeah if the owner of the nursery had a gun there may have been no deaths (except for those of the aggressor). in the end, who cares? utilitarianism is a horrible way to go about arguments concerning ethics. I could list all the people who protected themselves or their loved ones with a gun. it won't make my argument any stronger or any weaker.

quote:

It may not be the job of the government to dictate to the people but they sure as hell do a good job of it. Lets face it they could make guns illegal all over america too and what could you do about it? Other than carry an illegal weapon of course.

TARP? or let me get an even better example, the TSA? the tsa stepped in because we couldn't trust the private sector to secure our airports after 9/11. the government took over as the government 'sure as hell does a good job of it.' they have consistently scored lower than private security firms and past airport security. they have numerous sexual harrassment scandles. they have numerous funding and expenditure scandles. and they are less secure than the old private securities. just look at how many undercover tsa agents smuggled bombs and contraband past them. bombs...not box cutters (which was all that was needed for 9/11)...actual bombs.

the public sector always does a pisspoor job when compared to the private sector.

Tony Martin should still be in prison, the idea that he shot those people in self defence is laughable since one of them was shot in the back and they were both fleeing the scene. You won't hear that self defence argument made by anyone with a brain. Or those that know that shooting people running away isn't self defence it's vengeance.

No, they do not. It's unbelievably funny: Switzerland is possibly the most fascistic country in the western world and people in America keep on quoting it as a paragon of virtue because of its 'liberal' gun laws .

Oh Jesus.

Firstly, you can't apply any of that civil war era stuff to our modern world.  It's totally irrelevant.

Secondly, the 2nd Ammendment had absolutely nothing to do with America's part in the WWII.

not in the capacity he is claiming...but you may be surprised.

when asked about an invasion of the US, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto of the Japanese navy said "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."

And you are extreme in that statement. Just because there are points of view outside of your world perception does not make them extreme. You are just limited in your perceptions by your upbringing. In fact others have often considered your little part of the world extreme in your limited views of world politics.

And if you are so moderate compared to the wild wild west…why do you follow our lead all the time?
