yup, yup, yup, one time I wanted to have sex and I told him to go have a bath before sex, and he's like well how about you get ready with out sucking on me and then I jump in* because he felt the only need for a bath before, was to be pleasant to suck on* And I said nope, because I can get a yeast infection or something icky from having sex with him, since he's usually very sweaty and smelly, like stale piss and sweat, and he's like really? How?

I had to explain that the germy and sweaty enviroment of being in pants all day plus having pissed  off and on all day, then stuffing it back into the pants, to basically, well fester, the bacteria and stuff, could throw off my PH, and give me a whole host of female problems, I'd just rather avoid.

I used to get frequent UTI's (And one massively painful kidney infection) due to dehydration (Ah, the idiocy of extreme dieting in my teens).  Then, my ex- and I started having sex and I kept getting the things even after I chilled on the crazy dieting.  Turns out them happening on an on-going basis was related to a hygiene issue with him that was rectified simply by him washing up after he urinated.  The doctor was threatening to try to put me on a constant low-dose of antibiotics to which I emphatically said no and told the ex- to get on with that soap and water on his penis.  Worked just dandy.

obviously there are many causes of utis.  but if your problem is due to the most common infection, e-coli, you can take d-mannose, a supplement available in health food stores and online for less money.  i use the solaray brand which has "cranactin" in addition to the d-mannose and it's miraculous.  i immediately dropped the daily antibiotic, which didn't work anyway, and have never needed it again.  you can read about d-mannose and how it works online.  i'm not selling it but it has changed my life and just want to spread the word to other women.  any brand of d-mannose will do.  i have used several.

AZO Standard and Cystex (spelling may be off)..... I live on AZO... it works for the urgency without infection too and it does clean out the system a bit.   I have used these for years... constantly, with no ill effect.  Thank the powers that be... I would be in total hell if not for this life saving medication! lol

Same here.  I have lived with urinary system issues since I was a small child and had to be hospitalized several times for kidney infections, though I remained in "remission" for a few years as a young adult.  I get infections all the damn time, despite the fact I do everything I'm supposed to...proper wiping technique, no tub or bubble baths, not waiting too long to empty my bladder, etc.  Last month when I went to the doctor to get my physical for school, I was told I had a silent infection, complete with very high WBC/absolute neutrophil counts in my blood, as well as WBCs and positive culture for E-coli in my urine, yet I had no symptoms whatsoever.  I am very consciencious about hygiene and am scratching my head over why this seems to be such an issue for me.  I refuse to see a urologist.  Been there, done that as a child.  No thank you.  Not again!

All I can say is God bless whoever invented AZO Standard!

Interstitial Cystitis is a chronic infection of the bladder wall.  Diagnosis is usually by looking into the bladder with a scope by a urologist.  Treatment is antibiotics for a period of 3 to 6 months.

"Some of the symptoms of IC/PBS resemble those of bacterial infection, but medical tests reveal no organisms in the urine of people with IC/PBS. Furthermore, people with IC/PBS do not respond to antibiotic therapy. Researchers are working to understand the causes of IC/PBS and to find effective treatments."

I know.  I've actually considered the possibility of IC, but since the definitive diagnosis is via cystoscopy, I've been extremely reluctant to visit the local sadist (aka urologist).  I had to have the procedure done on several occasions when I was little (they scoped my bladder and ureters) and I'd just as soon forget those nightmarish experiences.  Alas, I think I'm going to have to cave soon and submit myself to the keeper of the torture chamber

That sounds like quite the hygiene problem.  Was he pissing all over himself, or what?  It seems so weird to me because urine is generally sterile and most sexual-catalyst UTI actually comes from the girl's mucosa more than anything.  Pressure, right?  But, anyway, yeah, hardcore.  Genitalia are constantly covered up - they should be the least dirty thing on your body unless you're not washing yourself.  Gross.

Good overall heath is the best prevention.  Stay hydrated, especially certain drinks, e.g. cranberry juice.  Most UTI are preventable just by making sure you urinate after sex - urine serves as a great natural saline solution, which is why guys most always have to pee after sex, because the body wants to flush the system (also, urine is highly acidic while cum is basic - also not a coincidence).

Anyway, girls - keep it clean.  :-)

I've had a handful of them in the more than a decade since then, generally related to really frequent, vigorous sex...decidedly worth the occasional peril though obviously frequent vigorous sex sans urgency, peeing blood, and all of those fun symptoms is far preferrable.
For those who do poorly with sulfa and/or macrobid, cipro is an option you may wish to explore with your doctor, however, it is an extremely potent, broad-spectrum antibiotic (Also useful if we're ever attacked with anthrax, seriously, lol!).

Does anyone know if the "diet"  5 calorie type of cranberry juice is effective in helping to prevent UTIs?

Yes.  A study of the efficacy of diet vs regular cranberry juice in preventing UTIs revealed the following info:

For those watching calories, Camesano says other recent work in her lab has shown that the effects of regular cranberry juice cocktail and diet (sugar-free) cranberry juice are identical. "That's good news for people who do not like to consume a lot of sugary juice," she said.

You can also take cranberry capsules if you don't like the taste of cranberry juice.

Thanks servantheart.  I was hoping that was true.  I started drinking it everyday since my last UTI.  As others mentioned they had done,  I also waited too long to see the doc and ended up in the ER with a 103 temp and a kidney infection.  Three hours of I-V antibiotics followed by 10 days of pills cured me.
