YourhandMyAss -> How do you turn soduim amounts, from mg's to a concept you can actually graps? (2/4/2009 12:43:58 PM)

For instance how many table spoons full of salt is 620 MG's of sodium?

Basically the way they spell it out on the box means nothing to me since I don't understand what miligrams are and any of that other stuff, I need concepts I can visualize, like say 16 spoons of salt, or say 4 bowls of sugar ect ect.

KyttynTheMynx -> RE: How do you turn soduim amounts, from mg's to a concept you can actually graps? (2/4/2009 12:50:52 PM)

1 tablespoon equal 15ml.

Or maybe I did the math wrong...

"There's 2400 mg per teaspoon, so that would be 7200 mg per tablespoon."

The American Heart Association
Healthy American adults should eat less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day. This is about 1 teaspoon of sodium chloride (salt). To illustrate, the following are sources of sodium in the diet.
1/4 teaspoon salt
= 575 mg sodium
1/2 teaspoon salt
= 1,150 mg sodium
3/4 teaspoon salt
= 1,725 mg sodium
1 teaspoon salt
= 2,300 mg sodium
1 teaspoon baking soda
= 1000 mg sodium

I got it from here:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_sodium_in_a_teaspoon_of_salt

Most processed food is loaded with sodium. I was looking at one of those instant soup servings and some of them had between 650 to 900 mg of sodium per serving! Canned soups are equally as bad. I'd rather get low sodium, no sodium or make my own and use Celtic sea salt, which also has the magnesium and potassium remaining in it.

With the metric system you want to be careful with your capitalisation because 620 Mg of salt is a hell of a lot of salt, 620 mg on the other hand...

See I don't know anything about the metric system,I never really took math in school, as odd as that may seem, it's true.

it's little case mg

I know it is, and that's a sticking point for me, My mom is absolutely utterly clueless about what is healthy and what  isn't despite taking care of a diabetic mom.

She thinks boxed pizza and boxed mac and cheese are healthy and when I try to educate her she just rolls her eyes.

There's a pie in the kitchen, they thought it'd be a nice dessert, but I am actually going to refuse to have any, since I am making a concious effort to stay away from junk like cookies and cakes and doughnuts and pie* all things which she'd happily gobble down massive amounts of weekly almost, which is not why I am avoiding it*

According to a study by the Mayo Clinic, One teaspoon (5 milliliters) of table salt has 2,325 mg of sodium, and 1 tablespoon (15 milliliters) of soy sauce has about 900 to 1,000 mg of sodium.  However, your daily intake really depends on the individual and your doctor should be able to be helpful in that regard. Many brands now offer low sodium veggies, tomato sauce, etc..and reading labels is something we should all do.

but I am not going to pretend pizza and mac and cheese are healthy. Or good for us,

while they are not the healthiest things you can eat. they can be part of a meal... with moderation as the key. Go ahead and have a serving of mac and cheese or hamburger helper with a salad, and two servings of veggies. ..fresh fruit for dessert.
If you try to figure out the sodium/fat/carb content of everything you eat you will lose your mind.

However..if you really feel the need to breakdown the content of the food you eat, i would seriously consider an appt with a nutrition specialist (probably covered under medical insurance with a drs referal).

I wanted to eat a bell pepper tonight but my mom had a fit lol cause she wanted it for her stew tomorrow:))

That is the first time that's ever happend,  in the past she usualy gives me dirty looks for eating a doughnut or two not the veggies.

It's not about breaking down all content, but I do want to understand what I am getting. And yes a trip to the nutritionist would be covered by mymedical insurance, and is what I am considering anyway cause I have other questions, like how much is to much, is it to much to have bell peppers everyday twice a da y ect ect.

Here's an Amazon link to all kinds of books on low sodium diets and low sodium cooking. I'm sure you could find something at the local library as well.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=low+sodium&x=0&y=0

Also, I like what both corysub and sirsholly said. Check with your doctor and moderation is the key. Do not stress if you fall of the salt wagon. I work in a healt food store and those that come in so rigid in their diets tend to be very uptight and anxious.

I remember in What The Bleep Down the Rabbit Hole, on the special features, on doctor said they did a study on two groups of people that ate cake. Group 1 felt guilty and their immune system function actually dropped. Group 2 enjoyed each bite and their immune function actually increased. I am not saying eat cake everyday, but rather enjoy it. If you want mac and cheese now and then, go for it. Just don't have it every day.

When I go out to eat I don't look at sodium or sugar content. I do have to look at price though. [;)]

Edited to add that certain medications will affect sodium levels. I am on one right now so I need to be more careful. The irony is it increases cravings for sugar and salt.

Good luck!

You've mentioned being diabetic or something in a few threads, so keep in mind that bell peppers have high sugar contents, as do carrots. While they're better for you than things like cake and candy, you should try sticking to dark leafy greens and brocolli, etc.

housesub4you -> RE: How do you turn soduim amounts, from mg's to a concept you can actually graps? (2/5/2009 4:11:49 AM)

It seems like you keep asking the same question in every thread/post.  How can I eat whatever I want and not have to worry about anything?

It's called moderation, it has been the same answer you received in every thread you start.  But you want your cake and to eat it too.  Stop eating fast food everyday, buy a good cook book and get off the couch and spend some time in the kitchen cooking food.  If you can read, you can cook.

Want to cut down on salt, I put 1 teaspoon of salt in a small bowl next to my stove, that is all the salt I can use for the day.  I use spices, both fresh and dries, to add flavor.

I love to cook and eat, but I don't eat junk everyday.  Maybe once a month I may order a pizza or get fast food.  If it comes in a box or a can it is loaded with salt.  Buy frozen veggies instead of canned in the winter, make your own soups and freeze them instead of buying them. Not only will it save you money, it will taste better and be better for you.

The old I don;t have time to do all that cooking....yes you do.  If you have time to watch TV or drive to a fast food place to sit down and eat you have time to cook.  It all comes down to Are you willing to do the work, or do you just want to keep complaining, because complaining is easy.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: How do you turn soduim amounts, from mg's to a concept you can actually graps? (2/5/2009 11:06:57 AM)

We don't either. Daddy and I pretty much figure the foods gonna be fatty and caloric laden and We don't worry about it. We just eat and enjoy ourselves, and then we're careful the rest of the week about what we eat.

We're also trying to be careful, not to eat out to much in any given time frame. We figure no more than 3 times in a month. IT also helps us stick to a budget too lol.
