I have always heard Mrs Dash is good,I'll pick some up when  we go grocery shopping again.

I'm also thinking of taking cooking classes that deal with alternatives to salt, and how to season responsibly and with things that are beneficial to you too.

It is really great that you will be taking a nutrition class.  And you have great advice from several people here.  High blood pressure runs in my family and I have to be very careful with sodium intake.

In the spice aisle of the supermarket you will see a seasoning blend called Mrs. Dash.  I use the Original Blend or Table Blend for vegetables and egg dishes and one of the Grilling Blends for meats and poultry.  The other product line is mariande sauces but I have not tried those yet.

holly, yup and if I still have questions I can get my doctor to refer me to a one on one session, where I can ask the questions I am concerned about specifically.

be aware of eating to much. But how much is to much, 2 a day 3 a day? 1 a week?

Here  ya go...this is why you need a nutrition class. I think it is great that you signed up for one.

Ok Back to your questions.  I just bought some table salt Morton the one in the blue container and here is what they list for the converison

590mg = 1/4 teaspoon of salt which = 25% of total daily intake (this is there per serving suggestion)

So 1 teaspoon of salt a day is the limit. And that equals 2360mg's

m and M (or for example better bit or Byte) differences are only in the computer world cause for confusion. Can't think any thing like this in weight.

Mega (x10^6)
milli (x10^-3)

as in MPa, KPa, mPa

These prefixes can be applied to anything, you have to be careful the principle is clearly set out and Mg is very different from mg, although not commonly used. You've never come across a Megagram because you don't work in an industrial setting. Most people use the term metric tonnes i.e. 1000 kg or 1 Mg. The principle is still important though you can’t use M to represent milli just as you can’t use K to represent kilo when that should be lowercase. For SI units these prefixes should be used, don’t allow lazy interpretation, it’s not right and will lead to confusion of people that expect you to get it right:

a          atto      10^-18
f           femto   10^-15
p          pico     10^-12
n          nano    10^-9
µ          micro   10^-6
m         milli     10^-3
k          kilo      10^3
M         Mega   10^6
G         Giga    10^9
T          Tera     10^12

1Mg is never/hardly used  small units are used to quantify small amounts. It makes no sense to use megagram. .It is eassier to use 1 milligram then 0,001kgk is never used as stand alone for weight...always kg....(kg or Kg..will make no one confused overhere). (I know the list I am an mechanical engineer in the metric world,  for fluids we have even nicer ones..liters and m^3.). a nice one is 100.000 euro is a ton. 1000kg is a ton too .

FullCircle -> RE: How do you turn soduim amounts, from mg's to a concept you can actually graps? (2/7/2009 3:20:30 PM)

1 Mg is not used because people use terms such as metric tonnes but that's not to say it couldn't be used and therefore correct capitalisation is paramount. As any kind of engineer you should understand this and write it down correctly, because some people get confused easily especially when you start to mix units for measurements such as density. 1 Kg/m^3? No! Do it right, no excuse I’m a purist when it comes to things like this.

Just don’t consume a Mg of paracetamol or salt.
Damn commoners.[8|]

depends on the time in which you consume the amount :P
quote:

The unit name “megagram” is rarely used, and even then, typically only in technical fields in contexts where especially rigorous consistency with the units of measure is desired. For most purposes, the unit “tonne” is instead used. The tonne and its symbol, t, were adopted by the CIPM in 1879. It is a non-SI unit accepted by the BIPM for use with the SI. In English speaking countries it is usually called “metric ton”.[28] Note also that the unit name “megatonne” or “megaton” (Mt) is often used in general-interest literature on greenhouse gas emissions whereas the equivalent value in scientific papers on the subject is often the “teragram” (Tg).
the use of units for engineering is often mentioned on drawings and depends on the aplication. ( or can be seen in the formulas used)for instance house builders use cm (centimeters or 1/100 of meters) while machine builders use mm (milimeters or 1/1000 of a meter).Inter action between those people can be fun though.

And another thing….

1000kg is not a ton it's a metric ton or tonne.

Be careful Mr engineering. [8|]

in the UK perhaps ;) On the mainland we don;'t use such..read below Mr. Purist :)

anyway..for cooking it is best..just to add..till it tastes good :Pespecially with sugar :D I prefer teaspoons  or a cup as units above all the difficult stuff.

dear dear dear and where do you think the metric ton came from?[:D]

On the 'main land' you didn't used to call anything a ton, the metric tonne was created because its a convenient rounding up decimalisation exercise from the imperial original.

ton (plural tons)
  1. A unit of weight (mass) equal to 2240 pounds (a long ton) or 2000 pounds (a short ton) or 1000 kilograms (a metric ton).
  2. A unit of volume; register ton.
  3. In refrigeration and air conditioning, a unit of power required to cool one ton of water by 1 °F every 10 minutes, equal to 12,000 Btu/h (3.517 kilowatts).
  4. (colloquial; also in plural tons) A large amount.

I’ve got a ton of work to do.
  5. (slang) A speed of 100 mph.
  6. (slang) One hundred pounds sterling.
  7. (cricket) One hundred runs.

ton f. (plural: tonnen, diminutive: tonnetje)
  1. barrel
  2. 1000 kilograms
  3. 100,000 of some monetary unit, particularly guilders

Dat zou zeker een ton kosten.
Dat zou zeker een ton euro kosten.
140.000 euro is bijna drie ton gulden
  4. A large amount.

So you are now showing me ignorance is spread far and wide?[:D]

If you were a true European you would reject the notion of Ton and adopt the Mg goddamnit!

god..I gonna ask if they would please print  " Mg"  on all packages  LOLjust for my CM buddy. I think it would drive all cooks nuts..haha but perhaps we get bigger steaks and more icecream then  [:D]

I deny your answer on that grounds that I would be part of that sub class and interject my own reality where I was correct in the first place.

depends on the time in which you consume the amount :P

I’ve considered medical advice, average age of people, leap years and done a calculation to prove definitively a Mg of paracetemol will prove fatal no matter which period it is consumed in.

500mg per capsules don’t exceed more than 8 capsules in 24hrs i.e. 8*500mg in 24hrs 4000mg or 4g

Average age 79 – 12 (minors can’t have so much paracetemol)
=67

=365.26x67=24472days (earth takes 365.26 days to rotate around sun)

24472*4g = 97888g = 0.098Mg

Thus proving that no one should ever consume a Mg of hard drugs.
