Sorry im new to all this and this may be such a silly question, but im wondering what is the difference between the two? i was wondering this when doing my profile and i get confused whether to put slave or submissive. Thanks for any feedback.

To be a slave you must be a slave; it is a gateway one walks through to be owned in every sense of the word. It is my opinion those who seek slavery should classify themselves as submissives who aspire to be a slave one day.

Generally, a submissive holds certain rights as a free entity in their submission.

A slave is no longer accorded these rights; they exist to serve their Owner.

The tier of slave is not one to be taken lightly, unless of course your Master or Mistress does. But then, what's the point?

Jrain, in all seriousness, that's a question only you can answer in your own good time. You'll discover the answers lies within your heart and is, usually, dependant upon the dominant whom you serve. You maybe submissive to 99% of the dominants out there, but there is that one to whom you can be nothing but slave. Time will tell.

I think the basic difference is that subs have limits and some choices,slaves do not.

Except that many slaves are given choices to make and limits to have. Some slaves may even take on MORE limits if their owners have more than what they do on their own.

I think that is a great way to put it. I know I am a submissive right now, but I would never call myself a slave since I have no real time experience with my Dom. Over time, I fully suspect I will become his slave and he will become my Master.

maybe you should get some experience under your belt. Explore the lifestyle, who you are, et cetera. That might help you sort this out yourself.

A slave and in particular a Gorean slave, a kajira is totally owned. She has no name other than what her Master gives her and he may change that as he sees fit. She wears cloths only at his disgression. She is property. Often much loved and cherrished but property neverthes less. Of subs and non Gorean slaves I have but little knowledge.

difference between a slave and a sub?

slaves like me stay in the house 24/7, 6 months straight, w/o "offtime"...because a slave is mere property.

Master IronBear, soveh must agree with You....a true slave has a burning in her heart to serve...to give everything of herself to her Master....without thought for herself....soveh is kajira, and very proud of that fact...but she doesn't let it go to her head. As O/others here have said, submissives have rights and such....as slave, soveh freely gave up all her rights when she sold herself R/L to her Master, the only rights that a slave has, are the ones granted her by her Master, and they can be removed or changed at anytime the Master or Mistress so chooses. soveh tried for years to be a Free, but found that she was not truly happy until she fully submitted herself as slave. soveh didn't even know what BDSM was until she was 37 y/o and sold herself to her Master Rathanavan...she didn't even know consensual slavery was practiced until about a year before she met her Master.....all soveh knew was that deep in her heart was the burning need to be owned in the full sense of the word, to be slave, and to serve to the best of her ability.

If you are slave...there will be a burning need within your breast that can not be assuaged by anything less than full submission and admission of what is truly in your heart of hearts.....if you seek to serve and please in every sense of the word.....and along with that, you feel the need to give up everthing you are...to become what is pleasing to a Master or Mistress....then slave is what is inside.....to thine ownself be true......

I think that's a romantic way to look at it, but I agree with the last statement - which leads to my answer to the OP - To thine own self be true.

What do *you* think the difference is? Chances are, someone else in the wide world agrees with you. There are as many ways to do WIITWD as there are people to do it.

Untechnical definition:

Whatever you feel best suits you. If you feel that you are a submissive, then that's what you are. If you feel you are a slave, then that's what you are. Only you can make that distinction.

Technical definition:

the same applies as above, though some opinions will differ. Some view submissives as those that still have a small say in their lives, while a slave gives up complete control to her Master.

It really comes down to what you feel is right though.

That is pretty much what I was about to say. I am a slave to my Dragon. He has total control. Though he gives me the right to voice my thoughts and opinions... doesnt mean that he does what I want him to do, but at least I get to voice them. The final say is always his.

The other main difference, IMHO, is that a submissive doesnt usually live-in, 24/7. In my experience, most of the time they have their own homes and a life outside of the lifestyle and way from the Dom while a slave doesnt. We are here to serve when ever they need us, for what ever reason.

I used to call myself a submissive. It was over a long period of time that I owned the title 'slave'. The transition was rather slow in coming and sort of took me by surprise when I realized that it had happened. My Dragon did not push any of it, he let me take my natural course... to became the person (slave) that I was always ment to be.

I'm going to take a shot at this... although there are no "true" definitions, everything is relative to the individuals involved. This is *my* take on it

A slave is live-in, real-life, 24/7 lifestyle, who gives complete control over his life to the Mistress. Even the smallest things may come under the Mistress' control: dress, behavior, speech, etc. The Mistress has an awesome responsibility to take on the well-being of the slave. This includes, but is not limited to, the slave's health, his education, his liabilities such as child support and welfare of any children he may have, and issues involving visitation and/or custodial issues; his career must be considered. When you have this kind of responsibility over someone, you have to think of long-term consequences for any action you have him take; for instance, if he's a banker, you can't order him to stay home with you just because you feel like it. He has a responsibility to his employer, and therefore, the Mistress' responsibility is to see that he lives up to his responsibility. It isn't easy, and not something to be undertaken lightly... and if, as a slave seeking a Mistress, you find someone who *does* take it lightly, you want to RUN in the other direction as fast as you can!

Oops, this is supposed to be about slaves versus submissives <grin> Sorry.

Okay... so what is a submissive??? A submissive can be anything else that stops short of TPE. Really. A submissive can be a wife in a mostly vanilla marriage, and on Saturday nights she and hubby go to the local BDSM party and he strings her up on the cross for a fun scene. A submissive can be anything, to any extent, as long as the individual identifies as being submissive.

These terms... slave, submissive, Master, Top, bottom... really are just labels based on stereotypes, and as such vastly unsatisfactory. Think more about what motivates and pleases YOU, and convey as much of that to whomever you are speaking to as possible. Telling me "I'm a submissive" doesn't tell me anything at all, really, other than that you are not going to be whippng my butt. And we already knew that!!! LOL!
