FelineFae -> my vibrator EXPLODED. (2/28/2009 5:30:19 PM)

uh yeah. i went to get something out of the drawer and saw what look like cigarette ashes in there. looking again, i saw the lid blown apart from the the battery slot and the battery is now just a metal cylinder with fluffy ashes inside...

what do i do? is it safe to clean up? i'm weirded out right now. please help?

Battery contents can be neutralized with baking soda.  Use gloves, and a paper mask and eyewear if you can.  Many vibrators are manufactured kind of on the cheap.  It very likely shorted out, or the battery cylinder is too tightly sealed to allow the normal level of out-gassing to escape.  The best choice is not to put a vibe away with the batteries in them.  Small household batteries do contain some toxic contents - but, just be smart when you clean it up and you should be fine.

Now wait until the cord on your Magic Wand shorts out and sparks under the covers...

not just vibes, but you shouldn't store anything with batteries in a drawer.  flashlights are a big problem too.  and batteries are best stored in the freezer to extend their life.

Thank You so much. Now i have to go ask the Apartment/Motel manager if they have baking soda. Thank you very very very much. Master is going to never let me live this down.

What's a vibrator  [:-] ?

ShaharThorne -> RE: my vibrator EXPLODED. (2/28/2009 7:05:32 PM)

Just because Alexis loves to rewire my toys does not mean I like it...*holds on tight for the ride*

"Just a little more power on Tool Time.." [&:]

BTW, Also use q-tips to make sure the contacts are clean and use rechargeable batteries.  I already saved over 100 bucks on the rechargeables compared to what we usually have to buy all of the freaking time.!

I've always dissolved corrosion on car batteries by pouring coke on them. Saves getting AAA to give you a jump.

Take the drawer out, use a paper towel to take the stuff in there that's worth saving out, pour the rest in the garbage. Then just wash out the drawer and dry it. Wash off the stuff you want to save.

FelineFae -> RE: my vibrator EXPLODED. (2/28/2009 8:01:29 PM)

i poured baking soda over everything. i let it sit for a while.
i put the good toys to the side to be recleaned.
i dumped the remaining contents into the trash. then lysoled it and lined with a new plastic bag.
i took the batteries out of everything.
recleaned everything and replaced their zipper bag homes.
everything is back in place and battery free. except my little pink bunny toy...

[:)] Thanks to everyone for the help. [:)]

this was the toy. it really did feel nice, but it had a turn dial for on and off that was really loose and would turn on with the lightest touch to it.

Youse people have no conception of how demented I am and haven't a clue as to what thoughts went through my head when I saw the title of this thread :-)

Anyway, it's really no big deal to just wire it up to a small wallwart type power supply, all you need is one of the proper voltage. It depends on if you plan to use it at home or when out shopping or whatever. Also if you are in a fairly stable position when using it, like tied down real good, the wire should not really be an encumbrance.

One warning though, if you get the adjustable wall adapter, two batteries is three volts, three batteries is four and a half. You may be tempted to crank it up a notch or two, DON'T do it. Otherwise this story could get alot more interesting real fast :-)

BeachMystress -> RE: my vibrator EXPLODED. - It was toxic anyway! (3/6/2009 10:18:02 AM)

I looked at the toy and saw that it was a jelly one. Jelly toys contain toxic phthalates! Phthalates are what make the jelly dildos and toys so soft and cushy.  I first heard of this several years ago and at the time all I could find was a review on WomynsWare http://www.womynsware.com/ citing an article by a German Magazine.
quote:

ORIGINAL: http://www.womynsware.com/Side%20Menu/BuyerbeWomynsWare review of Crystal Jelly G-Spot dildo

" A recent study of jelly dildos and vibrators commissioned by the German magazine Stern (issue 31, 2001-07-26), reveals some alarming volatile chemical compositions. Toxicologists conducting the study were very concerned over the “extremely high concentrations of solvents” found in the sex toys, solvents that were sure to be absorbed into the mucous membranes of the body. Off-gassing of Phthalatens sufficient to settle in the liver, kidneys and other fatty tissues occurred at up to 100 times the acceptable European standard (1000 ppm is the maximum accepted softener due to the interference with hormonal metabolism caused by Phthalates. Dildos and Vibrators tested had concentrations in the 240,000 ppm range!). Other solvents found in the sex toys included Cyclohexanon, Phenol, and Tetrahydrofurane. These chemicals provoke eye, respiratory, skin, and mucous membrane irritation. Headaches, cramps, and nausea are some of the side effects that result from exposure at the levels found in the study."

Now there is more available. Greenpeace has even gotten into the act now. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/09/11/phthalate_warning/ You can also read:  http://sexuality.about.com/od/sextoys/a/phthalates_sex.htm Personally, I'm not willing to take the chance with either myself or my husband. We replaced all of our jelly and soft dildos with silicone when I first learned of the concern.

How do they get away with selling something that they know is toxic? Look at the package. They're listed as for Novelty use only.. AKA, not for real use! It's a total cop-out, but they've legally covered their ass.

Personally I love my Hitachi Magic Wand! It's a plug in so you never have to worry about dead batteries again. :-) They are a little strong though. I find that using it on my pubic mound instead of down on the clit is plenty to keep me happy
