In job interviews you usually get asked something like that.
They ask you your strengths, and then they ask you what you perceive as your weaknesses.

What do you think are yours?
(referring here to the weaknesses, in the interests of equal airtime, as we've had many threads recently where perceived strengths were trotted out.)

ps: I'd love to answer, but I've got an appointment!

Every weakness could be considered a strength and vice versa depending on your point of view.

I tend to see characteristics that fit some situations well, and others not so well. I'm not a fan of good/bad; strong/weak; right/wrong - I lean more to the horses for course point of view. And, using this as an example, you could argue this is a weakness because it doesn't provide for standards to which you know where you stand (there's no neat, tidy box where everything has its place), or you could consider it a strength in the sense that it is a flexible aproach to life and less likely to result in absolutes and an unforgiving approach. All a matter of perspective.

But, when asked in an interview, I tend to give the standard response......"well, I was having some difficulty in this particular area, but I took some time to reflect and overcame it as shown through this, that and the other..... and look at me now, master of my instincts, king of the world"....it's all bollocks, just telling people what you think they want to hear.

No apologies necessary Kim. I am not familiar with “Goodwill Hunting” so I am unable to make an intelligent reply other than to say that I do have a somewhat different outlook on life than many do but I have a suspicion we are both saying the same thing view from different positions.

The reference is to a scene in a movie, where the student “Will Hunting”, finishes a mathematical problem for his professor.

I was apologizing for seeing your thoughts as a puzzle to be solved.

The reason for feeling the need is that it seems not everyone believes there is purpose, other than fun, in games.

Also, I would think it to be more productive to say there are no rules, than to say one must learn them, learn to manipulate them, and then get life to play that way. (At least that is how the wording came across to me.)

I’m glad you didn’t mind my interjection.

Peace in your travels,

Kim

FR, after read thru

Again, what they said above resonates for me. & IronBear & cpK69 rendered beautiful little poems out of it . . . . . .

I got pointed here via the 'Honestly? I'm Perfect' thread I started in General, & these two threads inspired the following thought, that's kinda a reformulation of what others had said previously in this thread (particularly NorthernGent, above): one person's 'flaw' is another person's 'attribute', even 'strength' . . . . .

For example, in that 'Honestly?' thread there was a certain amount of disgruntlement exhibited over the concept of being 'tested' -- clearly some posters found the very notion of 'testing' within interpersonal communication to be somewhere between 'flaw' & 'hard limit', but it doesn't hold that kinda power for me . . . . . . I expect to get 'tested' by life in general, by situations, by tops & bottoms wanting to test my limits, by employers, & last but not least in pursuit of education formal or informal. For me, 'testing' is not a 'flaw', it's just another tool in the packet, as subject to mis-use as any other tool . . . . . . In raising my offspring I learned that 'testing', especially 'testing boundaries', is just a part of human behavior, something everyone does. Sometimes it's healthy, sometimes it's dysfunctional. But that's just my opinion. For those for whom it's a hot-button, hard-limit kinda thing, it is a problem. One of the complexities of humans is that each individual's experience can be both contradictory & valid as compared with another's experience & understanding . . . . . .

I think some similar reasoning is possible with many of the other 'flaws' discussed in this thread . . .. .

Another example is the label 'bitch' . . . . . Some see this as a 'flaw', some as a 'strength', & some of that varies with time, circumstances, & participants on whatever ends of the 'flaw labeling process' . . . . . . I rarely see my being a bitch as a 'flaw' but those using the term in a pejorative manner towards me seem to believe they are 'flagging a flaw' . . . . .

I never know what to say when someone asks me that...

I don't suffer fools...
I'm kinda chaotic, but in an ordered way that only I understand...
I buck authority and question stupid rules to the point where it makes me a tad unpopular.

See, I guess loads of people who knew me in real life would point out many many more, but I just tend to get on with my life regardless.

If my flaws bother anyone, I'd expect them to talk to me about it - that's certainly something I do, and I expect the same in return, tho I hardly ever get it. For some reason, people say they find me intimidating .

Then I'd decide whether to change what I do to minimise it's effect on them or to minimise their effect on me.

~fr~

My perspective on the topic is very similar to, NG’s; though I have to acknowledge that the attributes I listed earlier do cause a hindrance to productivity, most often.

However, it could be an issue that stems more from having an unpopular purpose, than the attributes that help accomplish it.

I also agree with, Kia’s, assessment of testing. After contemplating the results of the “Human Nature” thread, the one thing I saw as a constant was peoples need to know, or affirmation in their belief that they already did know. Testing is a large part of being able to say one knows something.

Very interesting topic.

Kim

i frequently find things humorous when others are being quite serious

i can be a bit of a pennypincher

i can be hurt rather easily

i'm too forgiving of others, and yet, i don't forgive myself easily

i never dress entirely appropriately for "non-girly" activities...(i have actual pics of me mountain climbing while wearing a cute outfit...but appropriate shoes TYVM)

Procrastination seems to be the general consensus here so I'll add mine to the list.

I'm extremely stubborn, sometimes overanalytical, I procrastinate alot, and am extremely loquacious. I've also been told I'm high strung, though I don't generally consider myself to be.

I find this type of question really tricky.

I think the only thing that I really consider a *FLAW* is that I'm contrary. It's the one thing about me that isn't helpful, in ANY way and can't be placed in a good light no matter what............Other than that, all I'd be doing is describing myself.

Strengths and weaknesses are a bit different, I can calibrate the things I THINK I'm good at and the things I THINK I'm not so good at.

I immediately wanted to start finding ways in which that COULD be helpful and placed in a good light...But then, I'm contrarian, also.
