Ah, Monarch of the Glen.  Watched  by three million people - and one man, snowed in at his mother's over Christmas.

Well, I'm even more astonished now at the shows that have made it in the USA.  Apart from Monty Python, they also seem depend on well-drawn caricatures of British types.  For my part, my fave comedy show from the USA was M*A*S*H - nothing to compare.

A wee poll - Did you Americans get Morse and if so, did you like it?  I can't think of a detective show more unlike American police shows (which I've generally loved - especially NYPD Blue and Homicide: Life on the Street - my all-time favourite tec show).

I adore Morse, I actually have bought most of them as well as the Ian Carmichel and other mini-series of Dorothy Sawyers and Poirots and and ... the list goes on.

Frankie Howerd???

Exactly.   I heard his brand of comedy didn't travel beyond the UK's shores.  His most well-known film was Up Pompeii.  He died within days of Benny Hill and they were often compared as a result.

I'm glad of that.  It was about as gentle a detective series as you could get.  I first saw it, ah, mellowed out of my box, one Sunday afternoon.  I fell in love with it instantly.  If you'd ever seen John Thaw as Insp Jack Regan in The Sweeney - you'd have been astonished.  He played about the most thuggish copper I've ever seen.

I saw it and was actually shocked and had to turn it off.

But i am a fan of the tea cozy mystery where you don't see gore and blood and things wrap up cleanly in the end.

What on Earth could be shocking about Morse?

. . . Gerry.  It was called The Good Life

I lived near that house once.  If a couple were still to be living in a similar house in that area, they could sell it for over a £million and retire for ever to a cottage in the country.

monarch of the glen!
my mom used to watch that with me and i'd drool over lexie and she'd drool over duncan and we'd both drool over the pretty scenery. great show.

Yes, I had the hots for Lexie. I got into Soul of Seas just to get more of Dawn Steele! When they brought in Simone Lahbib for series 6, I was in heaven.

Steel, I too love the original The Office. I have never seen the US version. I don't even get TV. I just rent and buy.

I would also add to the list
Waking the Dead
Wire in the Blood (Robson and Simone!!)
Silent Witness (Amanda Burke!)
The Catherine Tate Show

Brass Eye was absolutely excellent.  It's a shame it depended on tricking celebrities so much - they'd be wise to it now and the show couldn't work.

I think Royle Family might give our American friends a bit of trouble - Northern accents seem so often to be incomprehensible that side of the pond.  Now Rab C Nesbitt - no jest: that would definitely need subtitles.  The BBC considered giving it subtitles even for the UK audience.

I have Holly - she would translate for me (she translates Ozzy into English for me ... among others LOL)

Honestly, Miss Karen, it's formidably hard.  All the dialogue's in Glaswegian Scottish.  It's not just the accent which is as thick mortar, it's also full of local dialect.

Dang.  Even she might not be able to translate then LOL

I still love to listen to it, even if I don't understand a damn word of it.  I love to listen to accents of any variety (well, ok ... maybe not the hilljack American accent ...)
