I used to dance as a young child. I was part of a ballet and tap group called Joanns kids can dance. It was fun, for a while but I really wasn't feeling it to much, and recitals were stressful.

Wow talk about a trip down memory lane.  I used to dance my heart out on the weekends when I was in my 20's and part of my 30's.  Mostly freeform ballroom dancings.  I went to a small club that had a one guy act, but boy was he talented with a 12 string.  There was one older gentleman who used to teach dance and the moves the taught me, I was in heaven.  The talent in the small place was awesome.
Waltzing, push dancing and even some swing, before the craze of the swing came back in.

Years later my daughter found the love of dance and was quite the popular gal at the clubs for those that loved to swing dance.  Sadly I never got to see her in action but I can just imagine how good she was.

I never did it to lose weight, but it defiently burned the calories as it was rare to turn down a dance. LOL  Thank goodness Roger (the act) took breaks so we could all catch our breathe.

And this was all in insane high heels at that.  Its a wonder I still have ankles.

Dance like there is no tomorrow....

Yourhand, these things *do* work, ...*IF*... you stick with them!
Many people buy them and three weeks later they simply stop doing the dances or excercises.
They don't work if you don't use them.
If you stick with them for a 90 day trial you'll definately see the results!

YHMA, I have to tell you something. Over the time I've been on the forums I've really come to admire you. I remember when you began posting about wanting to lose weight and were full of excuses as to why you were unable to eat healthy or exercise.

I have noticed a huge change in your attitude. I love how you are actively searching out new and healthy foods, and even trying to do a little cooking. I love that you are looking for ways to get physically active and take good care of yourself.

Kudos to you! I know it isn't easy.

Sanguinarian -> RE: Has any one who's severely obese, ever got in shape through use dance vidoe work outs? (3/19/2009 10:58:00 AM)

The trick also isnt less food, to make your calorie count low so you burn what you take in, and then some, but plenty of healthy food that have a less calorie/carb count.

Example, you can eat something like a pound of cauliflower, and get seven carbs out of the whole deal. A pound is rather a lot.

If you stop eating enough food to fuel yourself, you will end up with migraines, dizzy spells, low blood sugar episodes and possibly even fainting spells. Remember to fuel up on good stuff so you have the energy to carry you through these workouts. High cardio-based set-ups require high energy. You won't get far if you pass out half way through due to your blood sugar bottoming out because you haven't had enough to eat.
But stay away from energy drinks. They have more sugar than anything else in most of them, so after a workout, your bloodsugar will still bottom out, unless you jug so many of them you replace the caloric count you have even before you work them off.

The bad news is that you have to dance a really loooooooong time. The good news is that you can end up getting a job in a titty bar as a pole dancer.

YES! Richard Simmons, got in GREAT financial shape by selling these things to naive overweight people.

You can spend money on his DVD here and make him more fiscally fit, or you can just follow his 'Top Secret' formula:
Less Food + More Physical Activity = Weight Loss

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Has any one who's severely obese, ever got in shape through use dance vidoe work outs? (3/19/2009 1:10:29 PM)

Why thank you. I appreciate the Kudo's.

I have come a long way I agree, and not just from when I first talked about wanting to loose weight but in the last 3 months. I eat more fresh foods an try to have one healthy thing in the meal if not the whole meal, and I bought sacks of frozen carrots, I can defrost and eat with meals, when the meal is something quick, or something someone else may have cooked for the family.

And I cooked for my family a couple nights ago, and even though I didn't love the meal, they did! And I've got more meals in line for the future. And I go to Dlife.com to find them and I look for ones that are high protien low cal low sugar and low soduim!

It's not always that simple for every one, it's true MOST people can loose weight that way, but it's very over simplified,  to think what works for most will work for all. There's people with medical problems that cause the weight, and people who bust their asses every day working out at the gym and eating right and never loose a pound. I will admit those people are probably rare however.

As long as you're having fun, I am coming from the perspective of have fun, be active enjoy life, and not from must loose weight solely. When you focus solely on weight loss and it doesn't happen, or not like you want it to happen, you may get discouraged and quit.

untamedshysub -> RE: Has any one who's severely obese, ever got in shape through use dance vidoe work outs? (3/19/2009 9:58:37 PM)

the first time I lost a person 85lbs I did it with jenny craig and exercise kept it off four years husband died gained it back and a bit so this time I did the surgery and went into threapy to deal with my head issues. Exercise is a must to lose and keep off weight.

FullfigRIMAAM1 -> RE: Has any one who's severely obese, ever got in shape through use dance vidoe work outs? (3/19/2009 9:58:39 PM)

I don't know if this is the answer you seek, but dancing is one of the things I enjoy, and when doing it regularly, I am a size smaller (18, rather than 20); so yes, walking or dancing regularly, definitely does work.    M

Count me as another who's wa-a-ay impressed. Lady Tiger mentions a time when you were apparently making excuses for not being able to eat properly; I don't remember that, but I do remember when you first started posting questions a few months ago about how to eat a better, healthier diet, and I'm really blown away by how much you just grabbed hold of it and jumped all over it. Man, when you decide to do something, you friggin' do it, don't you? You do realize, don't you, how many people spend years or even decades talking about how someday they're going to get around to doing what you've done in just a few months?

Major respect. You're a breath of fresh air, and I enjoy reading your posts more and more every day. Good luck to you and your family on this effort, and whatever you do, don't get discouraged if it doesn't all go smoothly every step of the way. You're on the right track. Keep at it!

winterlight -> RE: Has any one who's severely obese, ever got in shape through use dance vidoe work outs? (3/20/2009 7:57:56 PM)

I can't afford 8 hours a day dancing practice like they do on Dancing with the Stars. It just isn't feasible..

TaoWoman -> RE: Has any one who's severely obese, ever got in shape through use dance vidoe work outs? (3/20/2009 8:13:28 PM)

YHMA,

As many have already said, one of the keys is to find something you love and be consistent with it. While i don't dance in front of others anymore, except at concerts and tribal/bohemian festivals, i really do love to dance. I have tribal dance yoga, belly dance, chakra dance and ofcourse just plugging in the ipod and grinding to the Scissor Sisters in front of my mirrors. If you are having fun, you will look forward to doing it and often [:)]

I was thinking of redistributing 60s and 70s porn and calling it "Spanking To The Oldies."  It would be for all of those who don't like to dance but don't mind tennis elbow.

camille65 -> RE: Has any one who's severely obese, ever got in shape through use dance vidoe work outs? (3/21/2009 7:03:35 AM)

I volunteer for that Irishknight... I will selflessly sacrifice my bootay to the cause!

Yeah a lot of people sit around and say I will...... what ever it is they're waiting to do, once I loose some weight or once this this and this happen , and I am like screw waiting, I am going to have fun and have a life, and get out there and do things, and if I can't zip line yet because I am to heavy, well then I'll do other fun things while working to beat the weight limit  to do zip lining and caving and 3 day horse back rides and camping.  I am not going to sit at home and wait for some magical day when suddenly it'll be the right time for me to do activities I want.

I am also signed up for the hour long walking class at kaiser, and I walk at home too and I got a gorgious doggie who'll play chase and keep away any time mommy musters up the energy and pizaz to chase her.
