UPSG,

You completely missed the entire point of of my post, failed to address your own personal attacks on people and resorted to claiming everyone who disagrees with the contraception policies of the Catholic Church are bigots.

Man, you are so caught up in searching for bigotry that you are insulting people that you don't even know who disagree on a particular set of teachings.  That says more about your perceptions than about their positions.

UPSG,

Hey, don't be dissin my homegirls now.

beth is a very smart and astute woman who calls bullshit when something reeks.

And you think kitten would support the Nazi party?  Man, she is Jewish.

Now it is my turn.  Half my family is Protestant and half is Catholic so I know a great deal about the positives and negatives of both.  And in regards to the Catholic Church there are a great many kind hearted church members who do charitable works to help their fellow human beings.  What is pissing people off here in this thread is the specific policies and actions of the Church hierarchy.  Many Catholic families in more developed countries do not follow the Church teachings on contraception because of the sheer impracticality of those rules.

What does Jewish have to do with not supporting the Nazis? I don't think Stalin didn't like Jews and certainly quite a number of communist didn't care for Jews does that mean no Jews have supported communism?

The Nazi's persecuted Catholic Gypsies but that didn't stop some Catholics from belonging to the the Nazi party.

People are presenting true premises with false conclusions and consequently their arguments aren't valid.

The Pope teaches no Catholic should ever use a condom.
All Catholics recognize the Pope as the head of their Church.
Therefore Catholics will not use condoms.

It's illogical because it is open to counterexamples. (I'm rolling the dice on that because I can see the illogical without writing up a truth table)

And by your own admission above this argument - as a hypothesis - fails the test of scientific methodology.

When people hate based off of irrationality it is fair to conclude they are motivated by bigotry. Furthermore, the tone of the posts reveals that's what is at the root of these antagonisms. (tone and diction communicate intent)

I was dumfounded when I had read that some Africans believe that the cure for HIV is to have sex with a virgin.  That was printed in a medical journal, and really blew my mind.

Stuff like that is why you need sexual education, and condoms, to help stem the AIDS epidemic. People are going to fuck. If you live in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of other people and some cows, wtf else are you going to do to fill your free time anyway?

-Lynn, who doesn't care if the catholics, the jews, or some fat vegans do the educating, as long as the condoms get distributed.

These are my opinions, too.  The Pope said it.  If you aren't catholic, and the Pope, as Mercnbeth mentioned isn't your CEO, why worry over it?  Whose life is it costing?  Has the Pope's declaration stopped the handing out of condoms in Africa...or anywhere, for that matter??  Do catholics divorce, when the catholic church doesn't recognize divorce....yes.  Do some catholics eat meat during lent...yes.  Do people stop having abortions because the Pope said abortions aren't right...no.  Why is this remark hitting so many nerves?

You are discounting how deeply the Church's teachings affect many.

And considering the Catholic Church is the largest in the world, a very many.

I had relatives who were deeply against Bush but decided not to vote in the 2004 election because of certain Catholic bishops who condemned  their fellow Catholic Kerry for not opposing abortion.

So yes, when someone makes the kind of decision that affects our country's future based on religious dogma it does hit a nerve.

It was in a medical journal because it is 100% true.

Sex with a virgin will cure all manner of illness from cancer to indigestion.

By the way, you're not by chance a virgin, because I've been feeling a little under-the-weather recently.  [8D]

Louve00 -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/20/2009 1:41:11 PM)

No, I'm not really discounting that.  In fact, part of Bush's re-election was the ongoing war and his stance for christian beliefs (ie, pro-life, no stem-cell research...and all the things most conservative Christians think are the devil's work).  I know very well the Catholic church is the largest in the world.  Do you know some major Christian holidays, like Christmas and Easter, were 'set' for the dates they were set at, close to the pagans days of celebration, and incorporating the Yule, Christmas tree, and all the frivalous festivities, to lure pagans to Christianity?  Not only are they big, they are manipulative.

But the Pope's declaration of it not being right to give condoms to AIDS infected African nations has nothing to do with my country.  (although, he doesn't approve of them for Americans either lol)  But my point is, he doesn't have the authority to make that proclamation a standing law.  As much as the Pope doesn't want AIDS infested people using condoms, I doubt his wants are going to have an effect on things as they've been going on.  At least, he hasn't to this point.

I realize your point but I'm not sure you realize mine, being how influential Papal pronouncements are among devout Catholics.

There is where I read it! lol.  I haven't read this whole thread but when you asked KittinSol, I thought to myself..."am *I* getting over dramatical now? lol

And as far it not excusing contemporary crap...the Pope isn't trying to be contemporary.  The Pope, all the ones preceding him...have been as consistent as consistent can be.  I don't always think what they say is the 'end-all', but thats catholicism.

Priests used to be married.  In the early church, women held powerful posts in their communities.  Which consistent are you talking about?

Louve00 -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/20/2009 4:18:03 PM)

If catholic priests were married, and early church women in the catholic church held powerful posts, I'd truly love to learn more.  Priests to my knowledge were sworn to abstinence, not sure how marriage fits in there.  Nuns, the only position of any power (again, to my knowledge) were women who were symbolically married to the Lord (at least they were a ring on their marriage finger).  I'm of the opinion holding priests to that was what led to all the child molestations and other sexual abuses manifested.  I would be interested in learning more so as not to look ignorant, myself, please.  [sm=bust.gif]

And then, I'm bowing out of the thread.  I've posted my feelings on the Pope and how it will affect condoms in Africa.

See this site: http://www.futurechurch.org/fpm/history.htm
Some excerpts:
First Century
Peter, the first pope, and the apostles that Jesus chose were, for the most part, married men. The New Testament implies that women presided at eucharistic meals in the early church.

Second and Third Century
Age of Gnosticism: light and spirit are good, darkness and material things are evil. A person cannot be married and be perfect. However, most priests were married.

Fourth Century306-Council of Elvira, Spain, decree #43: a priest who sleeps with his wife the night before Mass will lose his job.

325-Council of Nicea: decreed that after ordination a priest could not marry. Proclaimed the Nicene Creed.

352-Council of Laodicea: women are not to be ordained. This suggests that before this time there was ordination of women.

385-Pope Siricius left his wife in order to become pope. Decreed that priests may no longer sleep with their wives.

Fifth Century
401-St. Augustine wrote, “Nothing is so powerful in drawing the spirit of a man downwards as the caresses of a woman.”

Sixth Century
567-2nd Council of Tours: any cleric found in bed with his wife would be excommunicated for a year and reduced to the lay state.

580-Pope Pelagius II: his policy was not to bother married priests as long as they did not hand over church property to wives or children.

590-604-Pope Gregory “the Great” said that all sexual desire is sinful in itself (meaning that sexual desire is intrinsically evil?).

Seventh Century
France: documents show that the majority of priest were married.

Eighth Century
St. Boniface reported to the pope that in Germany almost no bishop or priest was celibate.

Ninth Century
836-Council of Aix-la-Chapelle openly admitted that abortions and infanticide took place in convents and monasteries to cover up activities of uncelibate clerics.
St. Ulrich, a holy bishop, argued from scripture and common sense that the only way to purify the church from the worst excesses of celibacy was to permit priests to marry.

Eleventh Century
1045-Pope Boniface IX dispensed himself from celibacy and resigned in order to marry.

1074-Pope Gregory VII said anyone to be ordained must first pledge celibacy: ‘priests [must] first escape from the clutches of their wives.’

1095-Pope Urban II had priests’ wives sold into slavery, children were abandoned.

There's more showing married priests into the 16th century.

UPSG -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/20/2009 10:23:09 PM)

I'm not going to get involved in this thread though I could point out a slew of inaccuracies from Latin Rite and Eastern Rite married Priests to the prevalence issues of children molested in their homes by family or friends (most sexual assault is not necessarily related to not having a "girl friend"). Instead I'm just going to address you post quickly and refrain from involving myself in those other issues, debates, or digging deeper into the thread.

I feel your post rates a reply that is why I step back into address it.

In my opinion I did not attack anyone with an ad hominem. I in fact appealed to reason and used what I have been taught are tools to deduce an arguers intent and meaning.

A reader is suppose to pay attention to diction (word choice) and tone when reading a post or essay and so forth, to figure out the writers intent. Granted a reader can misunderstand or a writer can fail to communicate their intent or message well. Happens all the time.

I also used the tools of logic and scientific methodology. Basically I adhered to what secular or atheist people often complain religious folks or religious advocates fail to do. However, all to many secular and atheist people never develop these tools either. They hear cool words like "logic" or "science" and banter them about without ever really taking the time to further develop understanding of these things, which being cool, rings the loudest in our contemporary time.

I freely admit I have my own limitations. There are many things I need improvement on. My vocabulary while not the deepest bucket is a pale with some depth. My spelling and grammar can use improvement. But I work on myself.

One of the things that drives me to "know" is the fact - which the media never tires of reminding the public or myself - I as a defined "Black man" am not suppose to know. I'm suppose to be dumb and ultimate die in violence or in prison. The latter two may come to be fulfilled but I be damned if I'm going to be ignorant as all hell. Not when it's in my means not to be.

There are other things that motivate me to "know," and I will not name them all, but I will say various Brazilian men I have read about that have one or more college degrees, and are accomplished Black Belts in Brazilian Jujitsu, helps at least a little in me desiring to work my brain - or even my body. I'm fortunate to be born in a city and nation with a very good infrastructure - so why not be grateful and use the free public library or try to obtain what education I can even if it is a little. There is God. I should try to further my mind or talents if I can. And there is anger. Seething anger.

"Black," Catholic, and short. That's what you call being tripled fuck. At least in the United States - in Brazil I would fit right in (average height is lower). In fact I hope to move to some part of Latin America one day, for myself and to be of benefit to society in some region thereabouts. You have upper-class women in Brazil that can speak four languages, have two or three degrees, and are world traveled.

On the other hand you have some nouveau riche in the U.S. who probably couldn't even point the United States out on a map (and admittedly geography is not a strong point of mine). My patience with people in the United States - after running into so many that are willfully ignorant - is running thin. Going by the statistics and never tiring media reports I'm suppose to be the one that doesn't "know," the happy, knee-slapping, sambo giddy as all can be.

But as it is, when I run into forgeiners often times they are surprised I know something about their country, and not because I'm "Black" but because I'm "American." I wouldn't say I know a lot about anything but I try to keep learning - if only slowly and in tiny doses. To me - at least from my experiences here in the U.S. - most Black people don't know shit about Black-American history (and please don't get on the topic of Africa because all to many speak of it as if it's a single country [8|]), most Catholics don't know shit about Catholicism (though most have good "instincts" of the faith), most Jews don't know shit about Judaism or Jewish history (yeah... they came down through a matriarchal line but centuries ago they also used to antagonize Christians about the hilarity and debaseness of the possibility of God coming through something as vile as a woman's vagina), and really Americans in general are just ignorant on lots of shit and just parrot what the fuck they heard on TV.

My points about the true premises and false conclusion, in my oipinion holds. And no people weren't simply in a polite disagreement with Catholic doctrine on condoms.

For more on the willful ignorance in contemporary U.S. refer to this. (one of my professors sent out to all of his students)

The pope and his ilk refuse to acknowledge that sex is something used for anything other than procreation and procreation should first be sanctioned by God under the contract of marriage. The pope and friends seek to demonise pleasurable acts and most likely see STD's as a punishment for sex (my interpretation of their inhumanity). No one married ever got HIV from anything other than an affair right? (his logic perhaps?) This is the ignorance of the religion that will always justify evil as acceptable in some twisted way of other. This is why I refuse to have any dealings with people who say they have a superior understanding of a mythical creature they've never met. Similarly I don't sacrifice goats or other animals on the word of mental patients that tell me that is what god wants.

Really, it would be news if the Pope said condoms should be used in Africa. You all know he never will so why the debate? His religion is dying a slow death because of its failure to recognise how out of touch with reality its policies are, policies that can’t change because they are entrenched in the whole meaning of what it has been preaching for eons. U-Turns are something religions don’t have the luxury of, just look at the whole sun and earth, days in the year corrections and what problems they lead to.

When I say I have a theory and am proven wrong then I learn something but religious institutions can’t ever admit to being wrong so how can they learn? You are all asking the impossible.

LadyEllen -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/21/2009 6:57:13 AM)

The great strength of revealed, written religion - its fixed nature - is only a strength if the environment remains constant; such constancy can be incidental or, more often perhaps, artifically produced. When, rather than if, the environment changes, this strength can easily become a fatal weakness, for unable to adapt and unable any longer to resist environmental change, the religion withers and dies unless it can find another environment where conditions are more suitable to its survival.

The nature of the universe is change; this and the laws presented by Darwin are the lessons to be drawn.
