You're not a bible basher are you?

Don't get me wrong, to believe that we're the highest evolved being in existence is purely egotistical and anyone who knows me will tell you that I have no ego.
One thing I don't believe, however, is that the afterlife is filled with harp playing angels and a divine entity who claims to have created us all.  If, and it's a big if, something has created us which is hugely unlikely it's almost impossible to conceive that we'd be allowed to know about it.

I live my life on a karma basis rather than belief in a specific god.  I try to do right, I live my life in a Christian way but don't believe that an omnipotent immortal created life and sent his son to save us.
Hell, the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is more plausible than the bible!

Good post FourQ. Your sense of spirituality makes a great deal more sense. Glad to see a person who's spiritual and knows you have no choice but to believe in God!

I think it's unreasonable to think that we can comprehend something far more complex than we are.  Imagine a colony of bees trying to interpret human motives and desires, and we are not so far ahead on the complexity scale as a supreme being would be from us.

If one wants to control a bee colony, one simply blows smoke at them to calm them down.  Perhaps religion is merely God blowing smoke at us.

yours

This I do agree since he spent most of his adult life living and wandering around 12 other men. Hmmmmm......does make you wonder....

And they did get pretty steamed up with all that bread and wine.. You can see it on any of those paintings of the Last Supper, you know, where they're holding onto the table trying to stand up straight.

I love Dogma.
It's about the only religious movie I watch, short of the Monty Python's of course.

My religious movies;

Jesus Christ Superstar
Fiddler on the Roof
Holy Grail
Life of Brian
Godspell (although the stage production was MUCh better)
Dogma

I'm NOT a religious person...  like you, Q, I try to live what most consider a Christian life (and often fail miserably...LOL) but I am not convinced of the existence of a Holy Trinity.

I remember that experience(but maybe I was at a different party?), does that mean I can perform marriages and suchlikes now?

Let me just nip off and find my Berlitz "Bible-Non Believer/Non Believer-Bible" phrasebook and I'll be right back, I am not such an "Impressive Clergyman" as Peter Cook, but I am much more convincing than Charlton Heston.

I personally think Kurt Vonnegut got things right when he said that the big problem with the story of Jesus was that the moral of the story is "Never lynch anyone without first finding out if they have powerful friends or relatives."

The other big problem with Christianity, Vonnegut points out, is that it is impossible to hear the story of Jesus without thinking "Boy! They sure picked the wrong person to lynch that time!" and the illegitimate brother of that thought is, "If there are wrong people to lynch, there must be RIGHT people to lynch."

I think that explains a whole lot about the history of the world since Christianity became a major political player.

i'm puzzled...

Why do folks spend so much time talking about how and why they don't believe in religion?  Are they trying to convince themselves that they are correct?  Do they doubt their doubt?  Which religion do they not believe?
