Forget about party affiliations and non-affiliations, where would you say you fall among the following options?

(Yes, I started a thread like this once before, but even if go find it in the archives and bump it, it wouldn't be here in PnR)

A liberal will gave a man a fish, a conservative will teach a man to fish, a socialist thinks the gov't needs to control the processing and distribution as well as the catching, and a libertarian might put up a sign that says "this way to the ocean."

Which theory best fits your opinion of how government should work?

It depends on the type of individual doing the fishing.  No one method works for all people.

I wouldn't mind being identified with 3 of those labels....but I would object to being called a socialist, though I don't reject out of hand everything labeled socialist. In other words I beleive there are many things Gov't is best suited to provide....though the fish market would not be one of those.

We would absolutely have to have a flexible system, Ven, with some complete exceptions in odd little places, but on the whole, I prefer the conservative "teach him to fish" approach.

There are some things only a government can do, and a few others that they can achieve less horribly than anything else we have, but the inherent inefficiencies never go away, and the inevitable corruption of a little bit of power won't either.  The less, the better.

I also think that passing out fish breeds not only an entitlement mentality among those who take the handouts, but also a resentment from the guys who get up early to be cold and wet all day, and sometimes don't get any fish at all.

I would start up an aquaculture farm so the fish could be kept in ready supply.

But should the government control your farm, dictate how many employees you needed in order to meet the regulatory requirements, let you write off the interest on new equipment, or tell you that the potholes that keep breaking your delivery trucks were your own problem?

All of that can be negotiated, lawyers aren't going anywhere no matter what political system we have in place.

Have I mentioned that some of my ideas might be considered a bit radical?

I'm an odd mix. I'll give a man a fish if he's hungry, and as soon as he's finished eating, I'll teach him how to fish. If he comes back to me a week later complaining that he's hungry, then I'll put up the sign saying "this way to the ocean." I would be most happy with a government that applied that same general philosophy.

If that is your plan, Heretic, save them for fish food.

*Ponders having lawyers as shark bait.

Sharks won't eat lawyers. It's called professional courtesy.

True.  But the scenario appeals to my sadistic side.

Mine too. But another way of looking at it is that there are probably some things even sharks won't eat.

...i'd agree with all of that. i'd also regulate fisheries to prevent over-fishing, because a lack of fish can fuck up future generations and regulate processing and distribution to avoid food poisoning caused by those interested in short term profit more than repeat sales.

Thing is, all the ideas are good. The problem comes when we are forced to choose just one.

Has anyone asked the fish how they feel about being used like this?

Yes, Local 549 of the Fins & Gills Union is organizing a protest at this time.

You mean a conservative will shoot a man that fishes just in case his cousin is a pirate and uses the boat on the weekend? In this day and age we should be teaching the man to export the fish.
