Reagan a traditional conservative? You're kidding right? Reagan's antics so distressed Barry Goldwater that Goldwater actually opposed many of his measures.

I do love how the right wingers are trying to dump GWB anywhere but on the extreme right where he so obviously belongs. He appointed "struct constructionists" to federal benches at all levels. While he didn't nuke anybody he did act unilaterally almost without exception. Basically you can go point by point down your list, most of which are the John Birch society or so positions not Goldwater's, and GWB is on or close to the red text on every one. Goldwater would have been outraged over GWB unilaterally withdrawing from the ABM treaty, he did sue Carter over that same issue.

Traditional conservatives were fiscal conservatives, concerned with a balanced federal budget and pro business tax rates, and believed that international cooperations, as characterized by the UN and NATO, was the proper way to conduct foreign affairs. They stayed out of social issues. Social conservatism is the offspring of the Dominionists and their so called religious right.

As I said, dont try and comment on how conservatives think or what conservatives are. You dont have a fuckin clue.

Raised by conservatives, in a conservative part of the country. Studied political thought in college. Have actually read the definitive works by the leading thinkers on the US right of the past century. To see you attempting to rewrite history to suit your agenda would make Goldwater and William Buckley sick to their stomachs.

Just to be perfectly blunt any claim that social conservatism, as we see it now, was ever considered part of what was expected from traditional conservatives is so grossly wrong as to shock the senses. D. James Kennedy did not invent traditional conservatism and that his followers have taken over the GOP was something actual conservatives, Barry Goldwater quite prominently, fought against.

Sorry to destroy your distorted view of history but more Republicans voted for the Civil Right Act than Democrats. (both in number and percentage) The Republicans mostly from the North and West supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the majorty of Democrats, the southern Democrats, voted against it. The Southern Democrat Committee chairman in Congress blocked a Civil Rights Act for almost 80 years ; every time it was introduced by Northern Republicans. Who controlled the southern racist states? Democrats.!!!

That`s right around the time the 'Dixiecrats' like Strom Thurmond bolted the our party and joined your`s.

We had our reformation.lol

Now you....    lol

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thurmond uses the word "n*gery" when he ran in the "segregationist" party.Lovely.
republican Trent Lott, has nothing but nice things to say about it.
"Twenty-two years ago, Trent Lott, then a House member from Mississippi, told a home state political gathering that if the country had elected segregationist candidate Strom Thurmond to the presidency "30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today." The phrasing is very similar to incoming Senate Majority Leader Lott's controversial remarks at a 100th birthday party for Thurmond last week"
republican Sen. Hatch (R-UT) Defends Trent Lott's Thurmond Comments
"then" lol republican Sen. Specter (R-PA) Defends Trent Lott's Thurmond Comments
republican Sen. Smith (R-OR) Defends Trent Lott's Thurmond Comments
Now here`s some comic relief! I know that the cons need some, right about now.
 The "Spirit of Strom Thurmond" !  Ya gotta be a comedy writer to make something like that up!  lol
It`s like Christmas every week with dick cheney....the gift that keeps giving...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090510/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_cheney
Last Sunday:
"Dick Cheney made clear Sunday he'd rather follow firebrand broadcaster Rush Limbaugh than former Joint Chiefs chairman Colin Powell into political battle over the future of the Republican Party.
Even as Cheney embraced efforts to expand the party by ex-Govs. Jeb Bush of Florida and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and the House's No. 2 Republican, Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, the former vice president appeared to write his one-time colleague Powell out of the GOP.
Asked about recent verbal broadsides between Limbaugh and Powell, Cheney said, "If I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh. My take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn't know he was still a Republican."
Hear that?  Follow Rush.....
Awesome!
I'd like this thread to become a place where we all come to exchange information and jokes on the GOP's latest catastrophes. A fun and informative avenue where all are welcome, but especially jokes about Coulter and Limbaugh.
I'd like this thread to become a place where we all come to exchange information and jokes on the GOP's latest catastrophes.
It is stunning how, after such huge defeats in 2006 and 2008, instead of rallying and re-inventing, the GOP has trotted out the same tired ideas, and people.  (even past-due ones like Gingrich)  Like the old definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result.
Instead of silencing embarrassments like Michelle Bachmann, they put her on FoxNews.  Instead of creating a powerful alternative to Obama's budget proposal, they present a glossy 18-page brochure devoid of actual budget material.
Each week brings a new catastrophe.
What's even more stunning (to me, anyway) is the fact that Gingrich now seems sane and downright moderate in comparison to other republicans.
As overtly proud as I ever get about anything, I suppose. And why not? One more reason I loathed Palin, that sanctimonious little simpleton.
She may have one, but I know what it is and how to spell it. Advantage 2-1, Panda!
