we already got the milage and how much he wants for it covered, and does he want cash or check, and I am personally going to ask has it ever had problems clearing smog test, and when was it last smoged, and has it ever been wrecked, damaged or repaired in anyway, how soon after payment can we get the title handed to us, Will you let us take it to a car repair shop and on our dime get it certified good condition through the autobody shop, how old are the tires, has the gas and oil and stuff in it been changed regularly and it been kept up well( and him building cars and maintaining them for a living it should be)

So any questions I am missing?

butterfly, duh, we wouldn't be buying it if it didn't start, and we wouldn't be taking it to an automotive place to have everything diagnostics tested and asking about smog and tires and ect ect if it didn't run.

Start here... http://www.carfax.com/about/car_history/hcabout.cfm And then have a mechanic do a complete check.

I've been down this bumpy road...not a trip I'll take again anytime soon. Good luck.

Depends on how much he wants.

I just bought a car for 1500 and one of the little noised I heard that I was told was a Pully Bearing is actually the AC Compressor going out. A New one will cost nearly as much as the car did.

ASK about Electrical and if it has a custom Stereo find out if it was prrfessionally installed if it wasn't then I would take it to a Professional Audio Center and ask if the wiring is correct. If it isn't DO NOT BUY THE JEEP.

My Old Saturn had a nice new stereo when I bout it and it FRIED the electrical in the car because it wasn't wires right. All they were concerned was getting the right amount of power and pulled it from the Ignition and Wiring used for a relay between the Spark Plugs and the Knock Sensor for the "Check Engine Light" When the car had a Engine Problem the very first time The check engine light came on for 3 seconds and then the car died DEAD.

It was estimated to cost 5000 to repair the damage.... I just got a new car.

I don't Duy from friends anymore. If I doesn't come from a Dealer I am Not Interested.

get online to CarFax.com and enter the VIN number of the vehicle. This might give you info on the maintenance history of the vehicle, how many owners, if it was ever in an accident. It also may not. Some cars are very well maintained by the owners themselves with no record of what was done.

Take the car to a mechanic you trust. For a fee they will go over the vehicle and tell you about any problems.

Lastly...look at the hood very closely. Is the space surrounding it even on all sides? If the hood is off center it could be a red flag that the car was in an accident. It could also mean the hinges are off and the vehicle was never in an accident.

When buying a used car you take your chances.

Yup you do, but for some of us we can't afford anything else and it's an emergency, since his car was messed up in a slight auto accident and it'll cost more to fix it than to buy a used one, and he drives for a living, and with out a car is under the good graces of the company to use the company truck, and there's only one company truck.

and yes I fully intend to ask to take it to a car mechanic and have the whole thing examined and looked at, I don't know if he'll agree to that but I don't see why he wouldn't, if he don't have anything to hide.

Thanks for the serious replies, unlike the one are they packing up and house and moving, which was funny, but not helpful.

Okay then why a Jeep?

Jeep has a reputation for needing repairs OFTEN once it ticks over 100,000 miles.

REGARDLESS of how well the opwner took care of it.

I would go to a Used Car Dealer and get a Dependable car.

If you have to buy used then I would personally buy used off a lot than from a neighbor.

Buying used from friends or family can be asking for trouble. If something happens and the vehicle won't work then it causes major problems, the neighbor won't care because they've gotten paid. Then you are stuck living next door to someone you feel ripped you off.

It is a big risk. I really would look into buying from a used dealership, at least that way you have some small recourse when trouble hits.

If you are determined to buy this used Jeep see if you can pay half now and half in 30 days as a sort of guarantee that it will stay running for at least that long.

You may be better off searching the papers or Craigslist. Seriously it can be a bad thing to buy from a neighbor, money is tight for you guys so don't just buy the first thing that comes along. Repairs on this could be more than you can handle.

steel Car lots by law want full coverage from a buyer and he has bare minimum coverage he can't afford any more than that, and car lots are insanley expensive, and our neighbor is going to take our car that's damaged and knock part of the price of the car off.

And we need a kind of big car, cause We're both fat and need to be sure we can fit in it, and he hauls tons of food all day for a living, so it needs to have room to store food and we have a 65 pound dog, that we have to haul to the vet and stuff, so she needs to fit too, so a hatch back, like ours was,* it was a ford taruas station wagon* is just right up our alley.

And the 4x4 is just what he happens to be selling. Wedon't have the time nor the ability to go through credit checks and legal issues and all the shit dealers want, He wouldn't pass a credit check for one his credits in the shitter, because when he got seriously ill the company he had medical insurance with refused to cover the bill and he defaulted on a huge medical bill. And we don't have the ability to go from lot to lot to lot to lot, since we don't have a car right now.

But i really don't want the thread to turn into a discussion on that stuff lol.

Please stop, i kno you and potty don't like me or think I am an idiot or something and enjoy making fun of me but please, if you can't not hijack my thread or roll your eyes at me, or post suggestions that are a joke, pleasse just don't post. I thanked you for your serious reply and I was greatful for the serious reply, ome of us don't have any experince buying cars or dealing with cars, and it's a seriously fucked up situation we're in and I don't want to be taken advantage of, cause if we are taken advantage of and have to get a new car on top of the new used one we just bought, well we might as well bend over and open our ass right now, cause we won't be able to get a new car to replace the new used car.

if this is a neighbor, note where he parks. When he and the car are not home, sneak over and check for oil/antifreeze in the ground.

Holly, I've been in the car, I've started it, all though knowing jack diddly about cars that doesn't mean anything, and It's not dinged or dented, or anything I can see with my own eyes, I'll open the side door and the hatch back and check that stuff out I talk to my neighbor tonight at 6 then monday Daddy will test drive it.

YHMA, seriously......if the guy will not let you take it to a mechanic of your choice to be checked out, don't buy it.

As for buying used cars at auto dealerships........my son used to work for an auto dealership and because of that, I will NEVER buy a used car from one, unless I can get a history on previous LOCAL owner. I know too much.

Almost all of the local dealerships that sell used cars buy them at auction. Those cars come from all over the country. You would be surprised at all the super clean used cars we get up here, every time there is a hurricane in the south.
