Souter is a conservative.Just not a,....... neo-conservative.

It`s the neo-cons who trash him.

I was listening to Bob Chapman today,  Souters retirement means something is up.  This came out of no where. Something is brewing.

He doesnt know yet what it is- but he is sure there is more to it then face value.

I hope President Obama is just as successful in putting an ideological match in that seat, as Bush the First was.

That's sarcasm, right?

No.  It's a completely straight statement.

That's because he's nuts. If the streetlight 3 blocks from his house starts flickering, he thinks it's the Trilateral Commission sending coded messages to the Rosicrucians. You've got to stop listening to these wackoes, man. Find a classic rock station or something, listen to some old Moody Blues.

Oh.  So you're just confused on your history then.  Because Bush the First wasn't successful in his appointment of Souter (as I pointed out).

Right.  Now take that to the next conclusion....

No need to create a conspiracy, since (as many articles have noted):

Souter has made clear to friends for some time that he wanted to leave Washington, a city he has never liked, and return to his native New Hampshire.

Clearly he was waiting until Bush was out of office.

Then you might like Justice Hillary Clinton?

I think Hillary could still be president eight years from now.  How about William Jefferson Clinton.  If Obama wants to piss off neo conservatives forever, it should be Bill.

They are mentioning Gov Jennifer Grandholm of Michigan. Let's hope not. She is a walking disaster.

Being a victim of Grandholm for a number of years:  Isn't there a requirement that she be able to read and write English.  Such a present from Canada we should reciprocate.  Maybe the swine flu.

At age 69?  No way.  2008 was her one and only chance.

Yeah, they'd be pissed, but Obama's not about to appoint another old white guy to the Court.

Well, um, hell, maybe you are right.  At 61 I am also just another old white guy. However, what is that statute relating to discrimination on  account of age.  AARP power!

Since I am going out with a 76 year old woman, I guess my perception is difference.  The 76 year old would ride you to death and put you away wet.  So, I think Hillary can be president at the young age of 69.

It's not a matter of "can she function as President" but rather "can she be elected" or even "nominated".  She knows the answer is No.  McCain's age (72) was a significant issue during the campaign.

Same thing with Romney.  He might attempt to run in 2012 (age 65), but not 2016.  Handicap for Gingrich in 2012 too (69).

Reagan was 69 when he was elected for his first term.

And his subsequent Alzheimer's (while still in office) is why age is an issue in elections in this century.

Is there proof of that or just rumor that the onset started while he was still in office?

In politics, perception is everything.  i.e., if people remember it that way, then it still affects elections, rumor or not.  Is it just rumor that Obama is a Muslim?  Irrelevant, as many voted against him based on that perception--no matter how many times they were told otherwise.

McCain's age was a major issue in 2008, so it will be for any 65+ candidate in 2012 or 2016.

It will be interesting to see who ends up there. You aren't required to have judicial or legal experience to be nominated to the Supreme Court, so even Carrie Prejean or Perez Hilton could be nominated, for instance. Of course, there is that pesky Senate confirmation hearing and all...

Though I must admit Panda, you did hit on some very important qualifications that the Executive branch will need to fill....!
