Status: offline 		The very best I have seen was a male Dom, the background looked like he was in a cellar with a really low ceiling, pretty cluttered and messy looking, on closer inspection the thing in the background was bunk bed (not a lot of head room), the sheets were filthy, dirty clothes everywhere (I was particularly impressed by the Y fronts with skid marks)... The guy himself would not have out of place asking if you got any spare coins, though most bums tend to be a bit better groomed...

Oh yes, and he announced he's looking for a female submissive, she should be independently wealthy and able to relocate, I couldn't help but wonder who would relocate to such surroundings?

I have to say - that doesn't bother me. I still have some of my text books from high school around because I found them to be good sources of information and I have TONS of my college textbooks around. I never get rid of a source of information I regard as easy to use and accurate.

Honestly, despite my attempts to remove backgrounds from my photos, I kinda like to see what's going on in the background. Though now I'm almost scared to post my new photos (yes I'm a messy person damn it!).

He actually had quite a list of things she had to be, but he didn't mention total moron ;) I should have written down the name and checked his profile from time to time, I'm sure he must be mobbed with requests... On the other hand, he might have a few complains in his journal about how fickle fem subs are ;)

Status: offline 		I've seen a few of this sort.  I still get a kick out of the ones that still have the porn site logo (from which the pic was stolen) along the edge somewhere.

The one that perhaps concerned me most I think was entirely a genuine photo.  The young woman was clearly in her bedroom which was fairly neatly kept.  But the house was not in good condition and there were no wall plates on the electrical outlets, plus I spotted some exposed wiring.  I almost wrote to her just out of concern for her safety, but the next day her profile had disappeared.

Bad move in some cases. For example the photos on my profile were not taken in my house. Draw all the conclusions you want from them but they would be incorrect.
 
I used to have a pic with my tiff doll in the background, yanno as in chucky from childs plays girlfriend. People used to comment on that a lot lol.

First, a small caution about this big post:

I'm mostly not answering 'the question', this thread brought up a bunch of peripheral stuff for me . . .. .. . I do agree that I find people's photos on a site like this to be absolutely fascinating & very revealing, tho' not necessarily how they thought they were revealing themselves . ... . But we're all ostriches in this world, with our heads buried in the sand; occasionally some of us briefly pull our heads out & notice that we've all got our heads in the sand .. . . . . . Some of us even may stop & yell, 'Hey, our butts are sticking way up & we've got our heads in the sand.' & sometimes some of the other ostriches even answer us back: 'What sand?' 'What butt?' 'What ostriches?' 'Huh?' . . . *shrugs*

Yep, I've seen the gorilla guy -- but I'm always looking for the guy in the gorilla suit . .. . . . (There's this social-science experiment where a video of a basketball game is shown to the subjects. The subjects are asked to count how many times the ball is passed. Midway thru the video a gorilla-suited person walks thru the middle of the basketball game. The subjects are asked about the gorilla guy as part of asking about how many times the ball was passed; only about 50% see the guy in the gorilla suit . . . . This is a somewhat 'famous' social science experiment, been replicated many times . . .. . So. Yeah. I'm always looking for the guy in the gorilla suit . .. . . )

I'm gonna tell everyone (who pays attention to my words here) how to 'cheat' at this 'pic game': I call it the 'drape'. Any large piece of (preferably plain, unpatterned & clean) cloth -- sheet, blanket, whatever -- draped behind the photo subject will render the resultant pic a million times 'better'. More focused, less distracted by all that crap, no one's trying to show off or read the books in the background & so on (& thanks, Peon, for putting the pressure on about that subject ) . . . . . & takes lots less effort than tidying the place up, especially for those of us who thrive best in a bit of clutter . .. .. . . (Tho' I agree with all of those who distinguish between 'clutter' & 'filth' . . . . . )

You can hang the 'drape' behind you or get a friend to hold it; I have hooks in my ceiling specifically for holding the 'drape' . . . .. . You might also test out what colors do 'good' things for you, & what ones make you look 'poorly' . .. . .

Work on getting relaxed in front of the camera . . .. For me, a chunk of that was really 'getting' that I have the power & the freedom to take lots of pics (yay! digital) & to be as choosy as I wanted in throwing out the 'bad' pics . . .. . . I used to generally hate all pics of myself, but now that I have a (slowly) growing collection of 'good' pics of me, ones that genuinely bring me joy when viewing them, I've started to soften up on the photos-of-me thing . ...

Take lots of pics -- it increases the chances of getting a 'good' pic. For example, my 'good' to 'bad' pic ratio is somewhere between 1:6 & 1:12; that is, out of any 6 or 12 photos I take, one will prolly be what I think of as 'good' . .. . .

Photography is about capturing mood, emotional energy. So work yourself into whatever mood you want to convey . . . . . Most of those 'laughing' & 'smiling' pics on my profile were the result of (a) taking lots of pics, & (b) really 'pushing' my emotional energy up & out, as new-agey as that sounds . ... .. .. I was 'working' to get 'good' pics of me smiling, cuz that's what people like & respond to, & because I know it's a 'good look' for me, too . . . . . .

Ah. & the careful examination of pictorial backgrounds is not just a kinkster predeliction. The following link takes you to a site where that exam forms the core of their analysis of Craigslist Men-Seeking-Women advertisement photos (I'm lifting the following from a posting I made to my local munch discussion group of a link I got here, so full circle, FYI):

Since I am the resident photographer, I get reams of pics of family, usually opening a series of indistinguishable presents. So I end up wit a shot of me at a party, in my sans-mustache period, and every time I see it, I think, "Shit, my damn hat's on crooked!"

Status: offline 		I will have to pay more attention to backgrounds in others pictures. My pictures are normally taken by my cam sitiing on a tripod or by another slave so I leave them as is plus I am not so good at cropping yet.

Status: offline 		I just make sure my photos don't have a messy background. I would never post a photo that was taken in a  motel with that ugly green AstroTurf colored carpet, the ubiquitous flowery bedspread or the dual heater/AC near the window .....

Well yes... Any assumption lays the groundwork for being wrong, but it's fairly useful. The fact that you hung your radio's antennae cable on the picture frames says more to me than your picture in handcuffs.
