This is good news and might help.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090511/ap_on_re_mi_ea/pope_mideast

The hopes of countless men, women and children for a more secure and stable future depend on the outcome of negotiations for peace," he told a welcoming ceremony at Israel's international airport. "In union with people of goodwill everywhere, I plead with all those responsible to explore every possible avenue in the search for a just resolution of the outstanding difficulties, so that both peoples may live in peace in a homeland of their own within secure and internationally recognized borders."

While Benedict has spoken in favor of a Palestinian homeland in the past, the timing and location of his comments were noteworthy.

No, but he's willing to host a bake sale.

This morning on one of the local mainstream type FM / rock radio stations I listen to a couple of the morning guys (Bob & Tom I think it was) were discussing this, and they said they were going to play a recording of the pope's speech, then they played a recording of what sounded like one of Adolf Hitler's angrier speeches...

I laughed. Yeah, it was wrong on so many levels... but on some level there was some humor there.

Well yeah, there is some humour there, considering that the Padre was in the Hitler's Youths, and that he just reinstated a previously excommunicated archbishop, who's really into Holocaust denial.

Nobody's saying the Pope was a fully fledged Nazi, but he belongs to this generation of Germans who exonerated themselves from Germany's collective guilt because they feel independently and personally guilt-free from the actions of their country. In short: a self-delusional hypocrite.

It would seem you are against people feeling pride toward their country, but expect them to be ashamed of it.

A new kind of math?

I am trying to understand the post, in the perspective of the poster; as it is not making sense in my perspective.

I suggest the following article to give you some perspective on where Kittin is coming from-

http://theformerfundie.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/pope-reinstates-an-excommunicated-holocaust-denying-bishop/

There has always been tension between the Vatican and Jews- sometimes it softens with a more liberal stance out of the church- and other times it hardens with a hearkening back to "traditional" values of the church.  This Pope is certainly swinging the meter back to the "traditional" side of things.

It's pretty hard to argue that the bishop being reinstated is a bit wacky- he also believes that 9/11 was a US plot in addition to being a Holocaust denier.

In terms of Benedict being in the Hitler Youth- I'm probably going to disagree with Kittin on this one.  Having visited Berlin recently and having read a certain amount about the Nazi takeover of Germany, I'm no longer so certain about the concept of collective guilt- and how much individual Germans actually bear.  How much responsibility do the US citizens bear for the tortures of Guantanamo?  George Bush "won" an open election- which is more than Hitler ever did.  Speaking out against the regime from 1933 onward was likely to get you put in prison and into a court system which was the puppet of the executive arm.  US and European citizens often take for granted their ability to freely criticize their governments, and don't realize the implications when that freedom is taken away.

But is a Palestinian homeland a good idea?  Well, Qaddaffi doesn't think so- which I think means it must be a wonderful idea.  In practice though, it's going to be tough.  Why would you set up a country for people that want to throw you into the sea?

I suggest we donate Vermont to the so called Palestinians...after we dig a mote to prevent anyone from crossing the border.

If fact I suggest we dig that mote regardless of whether its donated to the so called Palestinians. Edit: (after we verify that Patrick Leahy is at home of course)

Hello Kim,

Take a look at the time line on this site and note some of the significant events.  There is too much history to go into detail here but a few highlights are as follows:

"Italy and the Jews - Timeline"

By Elizabeth D. Malissa

"1938 — In September, the Italian government passes The Racial Laws against the Jews, barring them from studying or teaching in a school of higher learning and revoking the citizenship of all foreign Jews obtained after January, 1919, and decreeing their expulsion within six months. On November, further discriminatory legislation will be passed, including the prohibition of marriages between Jews and Aryans and the exclusion of Jews from military and civil administrative positions.

1940 Italy invades France and Greece. German and Italian radio stations broadcast an official proclamation in support of Arab independence.

Pope Pius XII is aware of the Holocaust, but fails to speak out against it.

1998 — The Vatican issues a document assessing the Church’s behavior during the Holocaust; it praises Pope Pius XII for saving hundreds of thousands of Jewish lives, sparking criticism from Jewish groups.

2000
— The Vatican issues "Memory and Reconciliation, The Church and the Mistakes of the Past," listing several major areas in which the Church had failed, including the Inquisition, forced conversion and the treatment of Jews. One week before a planned trip to Israel, Pope John Paul II apologizes for the Church’s treatment of Jews."
