LE, who cares about their "face?"
It sounds like you're describing Blackmail. Give them *nothing!* Let China and/orJapan deal with them, or not.

Nobody wins once nukes are used. That is the whole point of keeping them out of the hands of nations that may casually or maniacally use them.

Let's see... NK = (maybe) 3 bombs by the end of the year.... No ICBM capability as yet.
USA = 12,000 warheads. Multiple forms of delivery, including cruise, MIRV and snoopy
Rest of the World = God only knows.

Still, I wonder who will win if the worst case scenario comes to pass?

Iran and North Korea are both ramping up the rhetoric to test our new President. So far he has done little in the face of these new tests accept asking the United Nations for more 'talk'. As long as they see him as a weak President it will only get worse.

Weak? A non-binding presidential statement of rebuke is seen as weak?  who woulda thunk it.

Maybe many things are happening in the world, and will happen, because the world police being the U.S. is getting tired of wasting it's citizens lives in other peoples conflicts. Threats will come and threats will go, but without the U.S, who is going to deal with the problem.

But then, is the U.S. not reaping what it has sown as regards nuclear weapon technology ?

We should have stopped them long ago... I hope we do not make the same mistake with Iran... this is what we get... Almost half the world’s population is now under threat by a mad man...and we let it happen.

BUT

Now we have a sane President and he is finally doing the right thing. He is isolating N. Korea from their Korean War allies.

Working with China and Russia behind the scenes using economic pressure and force to persuade them to abandon N. Korea.

This isolation I hope will force them to see reality…if not then a war, though at first bloody, could be a short one and a final solution.

They have a huge army but with little modern equipment. Their air force is competent but they have few parts…without aid from Russia or China they will quickly be defeated or starved into submission.

I hope… that he is not mad enough to throw a bomb at Japan or one of our bases…but you never know with a megalomaniac.

Just a personal opinion… many seem to think he is just trying to extort money in exchange for dropping his nuclear weapon programs. I do not believe this for a second.

He is the typical megalomaniac and he is doing this for power and to advance his ambitions in the region. He is afraid he will die before he achieves his grand place in history. He sees this as his chance knowing the cowardice of most of the world and the US with its hands full in Afghanistan and Iraq.

It may be too late to stop this man form killing for his glory I’m afraid.

Butch

1) Let the neighbors of the problem areas be the police, or let chaos reign. The US should stop being that police force.

2) How is the US reaping what it has sown?

When China became involved in the Korean Conflict, they had a huge army but NO modern equipment. And they pushed us right back from the Korea/China border back down into South Korea. A lot of people underestimate North Korea because of their limited technology. We did also, back in the day, and we almost lost. Twice.

The insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan have limited technology compared to us. Never underestimate an army that can throw bodies at you.

Very, VERY good point, especially when that army can also throw a nuke or two as well

Oh believe me I do not underestimate the Chinese army then or now... I lost a brother in the war…Remember both China and Korea were supplied by the Russians… their planes were every bit as good as ours and with some Russian pilots and training.

Even with this support they were easily beaten back until China entered the war. Today they would face a better trained and equipped S. Korean army. Perhaps without the supply and support of Russia and China.

No doubt it would be a bloody war…as they all are… but without nuclear weapons I believe they would be defeated.

The real battle would be taking a bunkered down N. Korea on their land.

Just a thought...one of these days a rouge country like Korea or Iran will spark a real world war. We will not allow nations to set back and supply weapons and support without suffering the consequences as we do today.

It will be a world war and there will not be just a few hundred thousands of deaths… there will be millions.

The more the world allows countries like N. Korea, Iran, Syria, Israel…many more to add to this list… instigate war and hate the closer to this world war we get.

We realized this at the end of each former world war and tried to set up a world organization to deal with these problems…Sadly they have both failed.

Wouldn’t be a lot easier and less death on both sides to just STOP the development of nuclear weapons… stop worrying what is fair and who has them now…Just stop more from being built…Because one day they will be used again.

Butch

It wasn't until MacArthur's overrated Inchon landing that we were able to start pushing the North Koreans back. Initially they pushed us all the way down the peninsula to a small pocket known as the Pusan Perimeter. For a while, there was a very real fear that we would have a Dunkirk on our hands, that our forces would get pushed into the ocean.

Granted most of their initial success is due to the miserable state the US Army was in, and the initial attitude that "all the US Army has to do is show up, and those North Koreans will run back across the border." That changed when our rocket launchers bounced harmlessly off their Russian tanks, and their highly trained and disciplined army rolled over our poorly trained and undisciplined peace-time army.

You seem to have forgotten the Marines...no one rolled over them...without China and Russia it would have been over in weeks after the Inchon landings.

With the present state of training in our arm forces I think it would be an even shorter battle...or rather I hope. But like you say we can't underestimate them. Anyway we will have little choice if he decides to attack.
