Why should women have to pack about a ton of special feeding shit, just to make those of you out there who're against breast feeding in public happy. Besides that it's not like it's a box of fruit juice coolers, that you can just pack about anywhere the milk should be kept chilled if not drank strait from the tit, and besides that also, breast feeding is better than bottle feeding from what I've heard and read about babies and feeding* which I admit is kind of sparase since I have no need for lots of info on that for myself personally..

People aren't against mom feeding the baby, just the way she does it. Why not express the milk into a bottle before you leave home if you know you'll be out when baby's hungry?

You don't, just look the other way and deal with the fact that women have a right to feed their baby how they choose, and you can act like an adult and ignore it, or you can act like an  ass and purposly try to make someone uncomfortable, which if it was me, and you were staring lewdly at me, because I had my baby feeding on my tit under a privacy blanket,  I'd call the cops and tell them there was a strange guy staring lewdly and acting like a creep in public, and let the cops come out and have a little chaty chat chat with you.

Well, as the lady in the posted article found out, the cops instead would cite her for trespassing.

I actually got into a heated debate with my Dad once on this matter.  He thinks it's scandalous; I think it's a natural way of feeding.  I don't have ums.  I'm a fan of breasts.  I've never looked at a breast-feeding woman in a perving fashion; seems to click in my brain that it's a different scenario.  And, I will always fondly remember the abject distress on my ex-'s face (And, he was apt to perv just about any female who was reasonably attractive in any number of situations) and the stuttering and stammmering he did when he walked in on a very straight-laced friend's wife breast feeding.

Lucylastic -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:38:00 AM)

Do it if you want to or have to, you dont need to flaunt it, discretion helps, but im not denying them their food, specially in the first few months.
You cant tell why the person is feeding,  maybe they are at a docs visits, or going from a clinic to a doc, I had many days when I would do my errands all in one day so I didnt have to go out every day, and fed them when needed, to suggest  that they should be kept home until they have shoes on their feet is more than a tad unrealistic in anyones world and  a little ignorant.
If plans change or delays happen, which they often do, you can run out of expressed milk. Happened to me on more than one occasion.

When I was a waiter, the new guy came up to me with a weird look on his face and said "What do I do?" I asked what he meant and he mentioned a lady at his table feeding. I just said "Look away man, look away. If you want a tip, look away." He said "I didn't notice it right away but when I did, I couldn't help but stammer. I totally forgot what I was saying!"

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:38:45 AM)

Some of us have lives to lead and staying locked at home in seclusion never going out unless it was a dr's appointment for the baby, or unless someone could stay home and watch said baby isn't practical. Now if your babies mother had no need to go out of the house, and had no life, other then being at home that's fine for her.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Loki45

Then how about just stay home to begin with? If.....and this is a HUGE, God-induced "IF"......but if I ever start a family, my offspring will not be leaving the safety of my home for anything other than family gatherings and doctor visits.

You know, there's really no need for you to be defensive about this. This is a discussion on a public forum. The OP asked what people thought, and I answered. I'm not your dictator, nor would I want to be. I merely answered the question. It's a shame you take that as an insult, but it's how I feel and I am not going to change.

I think this is all a symptom of a much larger issue. As we as a society go on and on about what is "our right" to do we no longer think about what we should do. Women went from calf-length, modest dresses to skirts that don't even cover their pubes in less than 50 years. And why? Because they have a "right" to look like a skank. Sure, they can look how they want, but when I stare at some chick ass that's hanging out, I'm the bad guy....right.

It didn't stop with clothing, either. Any display was 'fine' because it was a person's 'right.' To hell with anything remotely resembling common decency. That's long dead. Well, it's long dead until you're one of the afore-mentioned skanks who thinks a man should remain 'decent' when faced with a woman whose bits are hanging out.

It's a sad commentary on the way things have become. The breastfeeding in public is just another, granted lighter, symptom of a larger problem.

As far as doing it in public, there are ladies' rooms you can go to. Now hold on, I know before the thought even reaches your lips you're going to say "I don't have to feed my UM in a RESTROOM, GROSS!"

But don't bullshit me. I've seen the inside of a ladies' room before. They are lounges compared to a men's room. Hell, some even have a freakin' couch. It's not a sesspool in there and its a hell of a lot more secure than a blanket that the UM can push off repeatedly.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:46:52 AM)

Can't think of a more natural thing there is, providing food for your baby. The attitudes against it, show just how repressed and anti-natural society is.

"Forty-three states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands have laws with language specifically allowing women to breastfeed in any public or private location (Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming).
  • Twenty-eight states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws (Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming).
  • Twenty-four states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have laws related to breastfeeding in the workplace (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming).
  • Twelve states and Puerto Rico exempt breastfeeding mothers from jury duty (California, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia).
  • Five states and Puerto Rico have implemented or encouraged the development of a breastfeeding awareness education campaign (California, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and Vermont).  "

http://www.ncsl.org/IssuesResearch/Health/BreastfeedingLaws/tabid/14389/Default.aspx

"In the United States and around the word, there continue to be unfortunate situations in which nursing mothers are told they cannot breastfeed in public. Often times, nursing mothers are wrongly asked to retreat to a more private place in order to breastfed. "

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 9:57:14 AM)

I will admit I'm a tiny bit defensive, but I am also  serious. It'd never work in my family to stay home and never take a baby out or always have a sitter if you had to go out. It would probably be just us two, no family no support,  and as I don't drive if I need to go out, he goes out too, since he's driving me. Should I have to go somewhere with out him and I need to take a cab, and it's just us no family no friends no support, nobody to call at last minute to say hey I need a baby sitter, my baby is coming out with me.

Now on the other issues I agree. People do go out willy nilly with ass and tit and pube hair hanging out, and I don't agree they should just because they can. And I also feel that just because someone does walk around that way does not mean I have to stare, I can choose to look away. Now granted I may look at them but I wouldn't do it in a kewed suggestive way hopping they got the hint.

*agrees with Orion*

It's NATURAL.  THIS IS WHY WOMEN HAVE TITS.   Before (and for some years after) the bible, nobody would have thought twice about it.  The aversion to it is CULTURAL.  The woman is NOT flopping her tit out to entice, she's doing what her body is built to DO.

*sigh*

This is true, Monkey but following that line of logic, we all have pee holes so why not urinate in public too.[sm=dunno.gif]

And some mens rooms are gorgeous too.  But not all, just like ladies.  Most are pretty vile.  It's why women learn to balance and not sit.[;)]
If you would eat in a toilet, I guess I can understand if you wouldn't have an issue with people breastfeeding in one.  Me?  I wouldn't eat in the toilet - not even suck on chewing gum.  Would you eat?

As for the point of 'don't take a child outside' - well not everyone has that ability.  Single parents might have to go out to buy supplies.  Plus it's healthy to take out children to experience the world.  If the worlds that bad, I get why you might not want a family.  It's sad to see life that way though.

I never breastfed.  My personal choice.  But if a women wants to do it in public - not an issue for me.  Breasts rock.  Hooray for boobies.

Pfft people do.  Men more.  I'd rather see breastfeeding any day than some guy standing by his car at the side of the road just because he can't wait until the service station.

But then, comparing urinating to breast feeding is pretty moot.

Thanks for the links, Orion. I have them on my Austin computer and that is over 300 miles away from me. I really need to get that sucker and put a modem in it...

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 10:06:28 AM)

Very classy, if all you can do is resort to  veiled barbs and insults.* yes I am being sacrastic*

My mom never got to breast feed any of her kids, my brother and I were adopted at 2 and 4, and so well beyond breast feeding, and her nipples wouldn't express enough milk to feed her natural born son.

And no it's not just the contents and not the bottle, Human nipples are better shaped and better designed for feeding than silicone nipples, even the best attempts at mimicing moms nipple are not going to be as good as a natural nipple,  Drinking strait from the breast probably has less chance of sucking in a ton of air bubbles from a bottle.

Then by all means, use the breast if that's the only way.
I have to agree with what another poster said, the nursing mom's are usually so inconspicous that you never know what's going on unless you take a hard look.  My comments are regarding the mom's who think everyone wants to see her whip it out while she puts everything in place.

Lucylastic -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 10:07:33 AM)

In Ontario, breastfeeding in public places is a human right
You have rights as a nursing mother. For example, you have the right to breastfeed a child in a public area. No one should prevent you from nursing your child simply because you are in a public area. They should not ask you to “cover up”, disturb you, or ask you to move to another area that is more “discreet”.

While Im not a germ freak, the amounts of fecal coliform and ecoli found in public washrooms, is too high for comfort.

Ok, I was mostly kidding when I made the starring comment. Take that with a grain of salt. I have yet to actually stare.

However, as I said this is a symptom of larger problems with society.

I would object to such an act not simply because it's "a tit flopping out" but because I am paranoid. I am paranoid over our increasingly violent and uncaring society. Do you think some thug who wants your purse is going to give a rat's ass that you have a life attached to you? A bank robber in Nebraska shot a pregnant teller in her abdoment for crying out loud and then denied her coworkers the chance to help her.

This world is fucked. Morbid view - maybe. But it is. I don't like being vulnerable and I certainly wouldn't want to increase the vulnerability of any of my loved ones.

Listen, I am an uber-dominant, male chauvanist, misogynist asshole. I accept that and I've worked hard to become so. (It's long story, just go with it). However, despite that moniker, were I ever to start a family, my submissive wife would be treated like a fucking queen if she were carrying or had given birth to my UM. She'd probably get annoyed by the attention, honestly. I'd be her protector, her waiter, her chaufer. Yes me, the uber-dominant, male-chauvanist asshole would be a fucking puppy dog.

Yes, it's a perfectly natural thing to do, breastfeeding. But it's also the EXACT moment of weakness some lousy SOB's out there would wait for. I would simply prefer such vulnerability be as secured as possible. My house will be a fortress by the time I'm done with it. If you don't have a tank, you ain't gettin' in. If you are on my property, you will be on at least 2 differently-angled cameras. That is where I can feel that my loved ones are safe. Not the middle of a mall or a McDonald's.

Now many have said women don't have a choice. Maybe not. But that's society's doing. Women USED TO be married first. And their husbands could and SHOULD act the way I would if I were an expectant father. But when more and more assholes who shouldn't have been fathers to begin with started running from their responsibilities, things like breastfeeding in public became more and more of a necessity.

Like I said, it's all a symptom of a bigger problem. Unfortunately, I can't solve the problem. At least not for anyone who's not me or my loved ones.

Actually, as bad as it sounds, I have. But I was a youngin' and didn't want my food to get cold. But then I was the one in my family who angled mirrors and left the door open so I could watch TV while in there, too.

Ahh the silliness of youth.
