*laughs*

My dad only spanked me twice. Now I FINALLY know why I'm just a little bit kinky.

I was yelled at.. threatened... things thrown at me... whatever was close to her hand... even smacked with a flip flop... and spanked only a couple of times. Since reaching adulthood in the early 70's... I never understood why I LOVED being restrained... hmmm... guess I'll never know now... since their studies were inconclusive.... BUT... as an adult submissive... I STILL enjoy being restrained... and spanked! Go figure.. and I DON'T think I have a sexual problem...

what surprises me, and bit disturbs me is that people from collarme are watching FOXNews? When did perverts become right wingnuts.

I grew up as an only child but was never spanked that often and I consider myself to be submissive. I don't think I have any sexual problems but I do enjoy having a hand smacked against my derriere. Perhaps, it is because I also grew up Catholic with some form of sexual repression...oh well, if I could just find a partner in crime...sigh.

I am throughly amused!

However, is is a bitter amusement. The lack of respect for sexual deviance from the norm is just despicable, but sadly expected.

Thanks for sharing.

As a side note, I was never spanked.

The notion that spanking in childhood leads to a life of BDSM, is silly only because there would be a line drawn from the moment your parents smacked you.  I suppose no one at FOX or the reporting key members were spanked as children?  After running that piece, did everyone in that room shift their eyes towards each other with a knowing and secretive silent question as well as a confirmation that THEY were all part of this safe and spared little group of adults where no hand was EVER laid upon their buttocks?  That has to be one hell of an amazing group...all given the "...Ward:  maybe you should go upstairs and have a talk with the Beaver...." treatment from their loving parents.  Oh yes to party like it's 1955!

It's always a sad day when junk science is used to oppress those that dare to live by their own means, wants and desires. Phooey on them!

"Elizabeth Gershoff, an assistant professor of social work at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, who reviewed 80 years of spanking research..."

80 years of "spanking research?"
I didn't know such research was done.
Where are the records kept?
Can I get copies of the good stuff?

I like Shepard Smith.  I watch him sometimes and I'll admit it and not feel the least bit shame for it.

And for those who want to attack Fox, maybe you ought to read this a little more and start attacking a source called "USA Today" as well, as they reported this one first.  Or, we could just turn a blind eye to where this really came from in the zealous quest to attack the right-wingnut news outlet.  Yeah, that's more convenient.  Who said only the right could spin things?

Actually the story is from USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-02-27-spanking_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

Really? I wasn't spanked as a kid, had a lovely childhood, and am ... well, you know.

Seriously though, what kind of half arsed "journalism" is this?

"He is scheduled to present the studies today at the psychological association's Summit on Violence and Abuse in Relationships in Bethesda, Md. Three are yet unpublished; one has been submitted to a journal. He plans to include two in a book this year."

Ah ... *ha*! A book is due. Is it any wonder?

And since when did BDSM count as sexual "problems", FFS.

Surely blithely repeating an untruth, when one's job as a journalist is to seek the truth, is as bad as telling the lie in the first place?

If it's just as bad, why focus only on the one source? Bias, pure and simple. Someone didn't like Fox News, saw something on there that is questionable at best and relates to this forum, and posted it on here to ridicule Fox News. I really personally think USA Today has more responsibility for posting about a "bad" study than those who post about it afterwards. I'm not really sure you can blame the media for this at all though. If a study comes out, somebody's going to report on it.

My watching of Shepard Smith aside, I'm not really a big fan of Fox News either, and some of the complaints I've heard about them and their reporting are legitimate (not necessarily anything I've read on this thread though). But I never have understood what exactly makes Fox News the devil to so many people beyond the fact they're the one major TV news outlet that happens to be conservative.

While there is a real discussion about the study that's gone on here, let's face it, this thread was really started as an attack on Fox News, and there have been posts here which have done little more than jump on that train.

By the way, I'm not against USA Today either, and I seriously question the study as well for some reasons that have already been stated. I blame the people who did the study more than any media members who reported it if it's a bad study.

Not living in the US, I'm not really interested in the left vs. right wing pissing contest that is the criticism of various news organisations - I really couldn't give a flying fuck who reported it, all I'm interested in is the fact it's a load of tosh being presented as "fact", and that whoever decided to pick up on the story couldn't be arsed to do even some elementary research of their own.

Part of this is undoubtedly down to the dumbing-down in general of both news presentation and journalists themselves. I worked for ITN about 20 years ago (not as a journalist, I might add), and standards have unquestionably taken a nosedive. Should we be bothered about that? Well yes, I think we should; a populace that’s patronised and talked down to will almost inevitably dumb itself down without recourse to other influences, and the more stupid our societies become, the worse they become, most especially where tolerance is concerned.

If its true we are who we are cause we were spanked-then we should be the last generation of BDSMers. Afterall you cant so much as yell at a kid these days without being told you are an abusive parent.

It should be interesting to watch these thoughts as time goes on
