I hate to quibble with a post that I mostly agree with, but he actually is a very intelligent guy. Harvard grad, good grades (not "gentleman's 'C's"); there's definitely an intellect living in there. The issue is whether he's got any common sense to go with that IQ. There are a lot of different flavors of smart, and I'm just not sure he brings the most appropriate flavor to the table. Edited to add: I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't expect much better from him than you do. My point is, he does have the ability to surprise us both. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope he achieves his potential, and exceeds our expectations. That new avatar picture's a nice one, by the way.

Hummm... yes, well, "lack of experience" would disqualify someone from serving in Congress, wouldn't it? Oh, wait, no it wouldn't! When it comes to Franken's "inexperience" I guess he's in good company... 36 of the 49 newly elected senators this year have two years or less experience in political office. About a third of them are just regular citizens who ran for the office. (You know, it's that whole "self-governance" thing those nutty "Founders" thought up. Sheesh, what a bunch of loons, eh?) Not to mention, republicans kinda gave up the right to stand this particular ground when they tried to hand the VP spot to a cartoon from Alaska. I suppose if you WANT to make a case for the idea of how an utter newbie would be unprepared for holding an important office, Sarah Palin would be it!

Are you talking about Senators, Mars, or Representatives? I think you got a little mixed up there. According to the Senate's website, of the 100 current members of the US Senate, 96 have held some form of government position in the past, whether it be elected, appointed, or staff positions. Of the 4 who haven't, 2 are attorneys, 1 is a businessman, and the 4th is Franken. As I'm sure you'll recall, the Senate was intended by the Framers to be the "senior" house, the upper house, and the House of Representatives was meant to be more representative of the average citizens. It's very unusual for someone with no prior government service to even take a serious run at a Senate seat, much less win one. And most of those who do are attorneys, who can arguably be called quasi-public servants, as officers of the court, as well as having a comprehensive educational background in law and government affairs. Franken's lack of government or other public service experience is in stark contrast to almost every other sitting member of the Senate, and combined with his demonstrated volatile personality, raises legitimate concerns about his qualifications for the office he now holds.

When you grow up, you might understand that. Because (as I already pointed out), it's the U.S. Senate. It's not "happening there", ultimately it's happening in Washington DC. It affects everyone (even the ignorant and uninformed), not just residents of Minnesota..

John Glenn and Bill Bradley, to name two off the top of my head, both had distinguished careers in the Senate with no prior experience. As did many of the Framers you mentioned.

I wonder if any Right Honourables that Franken will now have the freedom to Fence and Duel with, as opponents, were - in any ways - previously in cahoots with the AMPTP, or benefitted in any way (such as shares) from sideing with the AMPTP vs the WGA West.

I think that what the GOP really fears about Franken is that he IS a comedian. They probably realize just how damaging that kind of sarcasam can be. After all, Letterman had a fairly big hand in this last election in shifting public opinion of McCain. SNL and Tina Fey screwed with people's perceptions of Palin.
