The Minnesota Supreme Court has decided that comedian Al Franken is the legitimate winner of last year's Senate election, and an election certificate must be issued. The decision is unamimous. No word yet on whether Coleman  and his superiors will accept the decision or appeal to the United States Supreme Court.

It is U.S. Sen. Al Franken. The Minnesota Supreme Court today decided that Franken, a Democrat, won the highest number of votes in last year's U.S. Senate race and deserves a signed election certificate. The court said that Republican Norm Coleman didn't prove that a lower court made mistakes requiring a rehearing of the case. Coleman had asked the court to order thousands of rejected absentee ballots counted. He had hoped the counting would allow him to overcome Franken's 312-vote lead. The court's decision brings to an end the seven-month state fight over the Minnesota Senate race. Franken has had a lead since January and a trial court decided in April that he won the highest number of legally cast votes.

Finally

That's it then. Franken is the Senator unless the SCOTUS wants to completely destroy its last shred of credibility.

I doubt they'd even hear the  case. There's just no compelling, substantive argument for an appeal under federal law.

Our governor, Republican Tim Pawlenty, is on the record as saying that if the Minnesota Supreme Court directs him to sign  the election certificate, he will do so, and today's ruling does specifically direct him to do exactly that. As it happens, Pawlenty is not running for re-election next year, because he plans to run for president. This clears the field for Coleman to run for governor, which could very well motivate him to cut his losses, save whatever's left of his public image, and move on to what he hopes are bigger and better things. This should be the end of the matter.

Not to mention that Coleman won't appeal.  He doesn't have the money, nor does the GOP.

Actually they didn't specifically direct him to do so in their ruling, despite Franken's lawyers' request--they only said that Franken is entitled to a certificate (http://www.startribune.com).  Still, Pawlenty dooms his Presidential aspirations if he doesn't sign.

Indeed.

Coleman is announcing at this moment that he will not contest the decision, and he congratulates Franken on his victory. It's over.

Yep, no surprise there.  That $100K Coleman had to pay for Franken's legal fees was a clear signal to him, on top of the $1 million he and the GOP had to pay for his own delusional legal fight.

And to think that all these GOP funds could have gone to finance a palinesque shopping spree at Berdgorf Goodman. Such a shameful waste, truly [&o] .

Vendaval -> RE: Franken Wins Minnesota Senate Race (6/30/2009 2:07:53 PM)

So the contest was finally decided, took 6 months or so. lol [:D]

It's not really fair to call Senator Franken a comedian. Comedians are funny. If he had been funny he'd still be doing comedy.

He was funny once! When he told that joke about...

Shit. I can't remember. OK, maybe you're right.

8. 8 months that we only had one Senator, and even that one only a mediocre Senator at that. I give her tons of credit for how hard she and her staff have had to work to meet the needs of all of Minnesota's people, but she really needs a little help here.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Franken Wins Minnesota Senate Race (6/30/2009 2:27:42 PM)

...and the GOP takes another well deserved hit! You sank my battleship! 60 seats! Fillibuster proof majority! Yeeehaaaa!

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Franken Wins Minnesota Senate Race (6/30/2009 2:34:39 PM)

Yeah, but it's kind of like one of those "good news, bad news" jokes. The good news is, 60 Democratic Senators. The bad news is, one of them is Al Franken.

Ah, well. Anything that not only gets Coleman out of office, but badly wounded as well, is probably a good thing. It just saddens me deeply to be a liberal living in a state where the democratic party was unable to find a single human being better qualified to be a Senator than Stuart Smalley.

LotusSong -> RE: Franken Wins Minnesota Senate Race (6/30/2009 2:58:23 PM)

Filibuster-proof Senate (as least on paper).. did I just hear the Right side of the asile do a collective "Oh shit!" ? [:D]

What, he can't be a comedian and an intelligent member of Congress?  Did you ever hear his show on AirAmerica, or read any of his best-selling books?  He's quite politically savvy.

I look forward to his career in Congress.

PyrotheClown -> RE: Franken Wins Minnesota Senate Race (6/30/2009 4:03:55 PM)

haha, FUck yeah, bout time we get some serious people in the senate.

Yeah but....didn't he run in 1983?

I think this is a precedent....whoever we vote for in 2012....will get a seat in the White House in 2028.

Oh, he's a smart cookie, no question. My concern is his volatile personality, and secondarily his lack of experience in  any sort of public service capacity. I question whether he has the proper temperament for a deliberative body such as congress, and the ability to apply that innate political savvy in an effective manner at the lofty levels of the United States Senate. He's done nothing in his life to persuade me he's ready for the big leagues, and he's done a lot of things to suggest that he's not. I'm open to being wrong, however, and very much hoping I am.

ShamelessBeau -> RE: Franken Wins Minnesota Senate Race (6/30/2009 4:16:46 PM)

Exactly, lack of experience.  This is just what the Senate and Congress need another comedian.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Franken Wins Minnesota Senate Race (6/30/2009 4:19:26 PM)

Hooray! A new poster who agrees with me on something! I love him already! Everybody listen to him; he's clearly a very smart man.

Welcome to the boards, ShamelessBeau. Enjoy the circus!
