Palin to resign at end of month

Posted: 07/03/09 03:28 PM [ET] Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) stunned political observers Friday by announcing she will resign the governorship after just two and a half years in office.

The first-term governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee made the announcement at her home in Wasilla. Some political observers had expected Palin to forgo an opportunity to seek re-election, but few expected Palin to resign office. Her reason for stepping down was not immediately clear.

Alaska's NBC affiliate, KTUU, was the first station to report that Palin would leave office. Her departure paves the way for Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell to be sworn in; KTUU said he would take office at the end of the month.

I read she is just going to announce she will not seek a second term, not that she is resigning her post

I sit corrected  "She said she would resign at the end of this month and transfer power to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell."

Not sure what her agenda is here, but I am betting it is not to devote more time to her grandchild and her kiddies.

Yea, even if she wants to run in 2012, it makes little sense to resign as Gov.  at the end of the month.  I can't think of anyone who resigned their office simply to run in the next election for another office

Maybe she's going into political training early so she doesn't screw up her presidential run in 2012.

I do hope the GOP as learned it's lesson about her...Imagine she could have been a heartbeat away from our Presidency….”Ohhhh I’m a lame duck President…I think I’ll just quit”

I guess we can add quitter to her resume… Damn maybe I am being too hard on her but you just don’t quit the good people who voted for you because you are having problems getting legislation though.

Now looking behind the scenes…I’ll bet the real reason she is quitting is a compromise where the allegations against her for impropriety on office will go away if she resigned.

Duncan Hunter (I know, I know, "Who is Duncan Hunter") remains my first choice for nominee in 2012.  Palin would be a close second IMO.

Yeah, I'm in the minority here.

I would lay odds that someone had something against her and made her a deal. "get your ass outta office and we will keep this quiet"

I just would love to know what that something was. The Vanity Fair piece was an excellent read. I am so SO glad that woman didn't get a chance at the White House.

I guess if she will work hard for it she may have a pretty good chance to win Republican nomination 2012. She would win presidency if Obama implodes( that has also a reasonably good chance).  For example, if unemployment will be 15%  (quite possible) Obama will be in deep trouble and  Palin can stress her good record managing Alaskan economy.

My guess is that she's gearing up for  run at the Presidency in 2012, and is going to spend her time doing the rubber chicken circuit.  She is a very effective fundraiser for the GOP, and she may be headlining fundraisers for the next few years, and see how many politicians she can work for, and build some alliances.

If that plan works, she's going to shift the party to the right.

They why quit?  If she is doing such a great job why let down the people who supported her?  There is no reason she could not remain GOV and run in 2012,   I don't think this will help her chances 1 bit.  She will be labeled a quitter no matter who she runs against for the GOP pick to run in 2012.

And in other news today is Obama's first day in the Hall of Presidents at Disney, that was the story following Palin on our local news

My first thought too. My second thought was, "who are we going to laugh at now?"

I know now how the editors of the National Lampoon must have felt on the day that Nixon resigned.

Yeah, no kidding. This is no way to set yourself up for a White House run. 2 and a half years from now, when the serious campaigning begins, she's just going to be that goofy broad with the Far Side glasses who used to be the mayor of Canada or something like that. 2 or 3 years is a hell of a long time to be out of the public eye, and if she tries to do something else in public service to keep her resume fresh, she'll just be castigated for resigning the governorship to chase some other shiny object. She really can't win here.

Yeah, if she cannot handle governorship, she sure as hell cannot handle being president.

She needs to hire new strategists. This is not going to set her up to win in 2012.

And it gets better. I just listened to the speech - which was even more bizarre and rambling than most of her babblings - and she pretty much said in no uncertain terms that she doesn't think she can govern effectively as a lame duck governor. Of course she didn't quite phrase it that way, but that's the gist of it. If this is intended to position her for a run at the White House (which it obviously is), then she's an even bigger moron than I thought. And I already thought she was a moron of monumental magnitude.
