...and for crying out loud why not let tradition stand.

Well it's a good thing our founding fathers (and those since) didn't have your attitude. Or else we'd still be an English colony and many would still own REAL slaves. After all....that was 'tradition.'

You are straw-manning kd.

My suggestion to this mess: ask for a private company to do the engraving at no charge, then tell the atheists not to look.

That's your opinion. Traditions vs traditions doesn't seem very straw-like to me.

Isn't "In God we trust" the official US motto?

And when someone gets a sign 'donated by a private company' that says "In Allah we trust." Then what?

The 'original' motto was "E Pluribus Unum," which means "One from many" or "One from many parts."

Ask the atheists not to look, again?

Sooner or later there will be a LOT of signs that people have to walk around and avoid looking at. Talk about clutter.

And in all honesty, why not? Allah is just a different name for God. Perhaps the solution is to just leave God out of it, like they do in civilised countries  .

I am not sure what planet you are from, but on mine I know of no "civilized" countries.

This mentality is why many who don't fall in line with "bubba" and his good ol' boys feel discriminated against. Because you know damned good and well that the moment something happens or tries to happen that 'bubba and the boys' disagree with, it's forbidden or made illegal.

Thats a huge assumption, Loki

So is the assumption that they are in some way compromising their values by using a currency adopted as the national currency for the last two centuries.

Actually, the phrase didn't appear on coins until 1864 and on paper money until 1957.

In both cases it was pressure from Christian groups on Congress that caused the changes.

U.S. Treasury - Fact Sheet on the History of"In God We Trust"

I dont believe requests from the people to members of congress constitutes "pressure"

quote:

One Hundred and fourty four years ago today, April 22nd, The US Congress passes the Coinage Act of 1864 which mandated that the inscription “In God We Trust” be placed on all coins minted as United States currency.

The motto was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment resulting from horror, carnage and resulting dispair of the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins.

From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861. It was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania, and read:

The Letters to and from Congress can be read ...

as well as on the US treasury site you posted above.

Seems to me not having *any* sign would be more tolerant to all.

So ... your argument is that small towns and villages, with down-to-earth people, have more regulations and governmental interference with personal liberties than large cities do?

If the Arabic's, Spaniards, French, Germans et al want their native tongue on the fucking building, they can go back to their own countries and carve it themselves.

Oh no.....only laws for those who go against the 'good ol' boys.'

As long as you're in with them, you can do whatever you like.

They used to use a little trick that involved lions, but I think it's illegal now.
