Ask the atheists not to look, again?

Sooner or later there will be a LOT of signs that people have to walk around and avoid looking at. Talk about clutter.

Ah, the price we pay for religious toleration ...

Firm

Seems to me not having *any* sign would be more tolerant to all.

Just the opposite.

Not allowing any signs is an unnecessary restriction on the rights of peoples religious expression.

My suggestion to this mess: ask for a private company to do the engraving at no charge, then tell the atheists not to look.

And when someone gets a sign 'donated by a private company' that says "In Allah we trust." Then what?

Ask the atheists not to look, again?

Firm

Firm...you dun did Bubba proud!!!

This mentality is why many who don't fall in line with "bubba" and his good ol' boys feel discriminated against. Because you know damned good and well that the moment something happens or tries to happen that 'bubba and the boys' disagree with, it's forbidden or made illegal.

Loki...allow me to tell you our "counsel" does not make or pass laws, legalize or make anything illegal.

But the problem is not just the cost of the engraving but the fact it is being engraved on a publicly-funded building.

What I don't understand is why an atheist would be offended by the motto. I am not religious and yet I take no offense in religious references in and on public buildings and places. I take no offense at being wished a Merry Christmas, or Happy Easter, nor do I take offense at being wished a Happy Hanukah (I draw the line at Kwanza though).
As long as "In God we trust" is the official US motto, then one should expect to see it displayed. If one has a problem with seeing it then one should take it up with their Rep to have the law changed (I prefer the older E Pluribus Unum myself). I have never understood how something like the motto or a nativity scene breachs the 1st Amendment, in neither situation is a non-believer being in any real sense victimised.

oh for heavens sake Loki!! Who is Allah? Hmmm? He is GOD in Arabic.

Yep, he is. But you try telling that to a bible-thumping right-winger from the south when they see a sign "in public" with Allah's name on it. You'd think the apocalypse was on our doorstep.

If the Arabic's, Spaniards, French, Germans et al want their native tongue on the fucking building, they can go back to their own countries and carve it themselves.

Tsk tsk tsk. You know that this country has MANY religions and MANY races in it, right? Why should our citizens "go back to their own country" to carve something if they are citizens of THIS country?

What do the atheists in, say, rome do?

They used to use a little trick that involved lions, but I think it's illegal now.

Damned shame - the movies just don't make for the same level of entertainment, apparently.

Really? How so? Does that mean they can't put up signs on their own property? No. Just not on publicly-funded property.

No, but if you think your counsel is the only place you'll find a "bubba" in a small town, you're very mistaken.

So ... your argument is that small towns and villages, with down-to-earth people, have more regulations and governmental interference with personal liberties than large cities do?

Oh no.....only laws for those who go against the 'good ol' boys.'

As long as you're in with them, you can do whatever you like.

Well, see, that's your opinion, and you are certainly welcome to hold it.

However, I tend to like to back up my assertions with facts and such.

How would a scientist measure your claim? A quick one that comes to mind is the amount of regulations and laws that a city or town has. Which is why I asked the question: it's a measurable, demonstrable variable that can be analyzed and compared.

Do you have anything - other than purely anecdotal stories, and your personal "belief" - to back up your opinion?

Personally, I don't see why most people are offended at what they are offended at. However, that's the odd nature of us human beings. Some are offended if you look at them cross-eyed, some just don't give a fuck.

Citizens of this country. What is the official language of this country? It is English. What is "God" in English, Loki? God.

All this complaining but most are forgetting the make up of this country...at least it is understandable...and for crying out loud why not let tradition stand. When the majority of American are atheists then it will be time to tear down the mention of God...damn get a life until then.

Straw man, Butch. Nobody's talking about "tearing down the mention of god." The issue is whether or not it's appropriate to use tax dollars and government property to promote religion. Entirely different matter altogether.

Considering how I have witnessed you respond (or rather ignore) cold, hard facts when they are placed right in front of you, I choose not to play your little 'game.' It makes no difference if I provide a dissertation on the subject or simply base my statement from experience. It is in conflict with your stance so you will choose to overlook it anyway. So enjoy.

Oddly enough, it doesnt stop any of them from spending cash.

Strange that pro-theists who are usually anti public spending haven't picked up on the fact that this little godly exercise will cost around one hundred grand in public money.

All that for a posh graffiti... it's absolutely ridiculous  .

Actually, that law didn't pass. America has no 'official language.'

Isn't making a law to support atheistic beliefs (no signs of any religion, all religions are nonsense and shouldn't be allowed) supporting one belief system above another?

You're mistaken, Holly. There is no official language in the United States.
