I am in that profession.  I have noticed that, despite what is often stated on the talk shows, a lot of our people have some sort of mental health issue.  Alcohol/substance abuse is a big one.  There are others as well.  To find someone in this life without one of these issues can be difficult sometimes.  Maybe it's that way in the non kink world as well, though.

Wow!! thanks all for putting up all these wonderful questions and perspectives on this topic , I originally posted a simple ? from My point of view ,  experiences and observations, I am not a practitioner of mental health,, My partner is however, we had a friend in our relationship for a few years, a wonderful sub, she is gone now due to illness,, past on. , we have been seeking someone to share this part of our lives together again , so we were ready to start trying to meet some
one Through sites like this ,its been awhile,
doing so, meeting some fantastic people on the way "Id like to add....."  now My partners job is diagnosing people for many different Mental issues and has been doing so for years ,takes her job very professionally,  she personally  feels for each and every patient she sees , we both have had mental health issues in our family's, Mental health is a very real issue to us, and needs to be spoken about, again the questions I posed were not to say all or a bigger % of subs, and i don't know about doms... only because we don't communicate with many, have BDP , just that we have noticed in our search more than we were expecting to, and yes all its not a perfect science to diagnose some one with any medical issue ,  But if it walks like a duck, swims like a duck ,,,well you know were Iam going........... Thanks again everyone the responces are great.  respectfully  Joel.

I second this idea. Since my son was diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder, my Ex sees autistic behaviours in damn near everybody. If you took her view of the world, then roughly 90% of us are autistic in some degree.

I will leave this as it is my mistake. I was confusing mybeloved with the op. I am sorry for my confusion.

OP, you still didn't answer my question. You defended yourself by stating that your partner has some experience in this and you both have seen it... lalalalala. I want to know how it is that you can claim what you do in your first post and not take a look at the poor, poor victims!

How is it that they can fall so in love without noticing this thing your partner is experienced in and you both seemingly know so well... but under this mean monster's manipulation and call yourselves healthy adults? Since your partner is in the business so to speak... I do wonder what she would say about victimization and denial and justification. Since you both are so very aware and informed, I think it wouldn't be much of a problem to discuss these things. Please do.

Op,
No offense intended.....however since Your partner and You have such a vast knowledge of mental health diagnoses...Perhaps You should consider evaluating Yourselves for narcissistic personality disorder or histrionic personality disorder.

Although I confused two different posters... I think this one still applies.

If the compiled data is coming from two people who are biased by denial or some other thing... it is like a cock in a hand that has never been within a pussy. You just aren't going to get it. (You know, what it feels like.) And your discription of a mental health issue and the results of this mental health issue bring up a lot of other issues, you just aren't getting. I would listen to the guy with cock in hand that never had a pussy explain what a pussy was like before I would take mental health lessons from you.

Statistics rarely mean anything. They are easily manipulated to prove the point the person wants to prove. In the most technical sense, every person has some mental health malady. People are so frequently misdiagnosed nowadays, it is almost laughable. Is it because psychology has become a more "mainstream" topic or because everyone is looking for a reason for some perceived problem? Much less than half the children who are diagnosed with ADD actually ARE suffering from ADD. There are very few people who have not experienced some kind of trauma that could result in some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, because the event doesn't need to be catastophic to anyone but the person who experienced it.

Are there likely more people in BDSM suffering from various mental disorders? When a person would rather find a way to adjust their society to fit in with their own problems rather than deal with the problems to better fit in with society at large, what better place to come to? Does that mean that all Doms are egotistical assholes who get their jollies ordering about sub/slaves who lack the self esteem to function in maintstream society? Of course not. But it does mean that the egotistical asshole doms and the subs/slaves who can't function in mainstream society have a place to go without ever trying to learning how to overcome those issues.

The BDSM culture doesn't consist of a good sampling of all kinds of people to determine whether or not the issues that occur are more prevalent within the subculture than in the mainstream. That is how statistics are so easily manipulated. You can't use Kinsey's reports, or Johnson's. Until someone takes a good sized sampling of ALL the different types of people both within the subculture of BDSM and mainstream society, making any kind of statement about which has more of which would be futile. Not to mention that there is a HUGE number of people who are members of the BDSM subculture who would never even participate in such an analysis.

Some "Doms" like BPD's because they can only dominate a woman who is not healthy.  I healthy sub would kick some ass, LOL.

??s I have been in this life style for many years, I am with My partner who is in the Mental health profession, we have been
noticing a trend, I guess you'd say ,, many sub females who seek to be dominated and participate in bd/sm lifestyle seem to be turning out to be boarder line personalities, I know very well that that I have personally been involved in the past with boarderline personalities who are ultimitly are topping from the bottom to acheive the constint recognistion boarder lines seek. I want to ask others who are familure with boarder line personalities if this is just perhaps the people we are meeting
or if there is a higher percentage attracted to this type of lifestyle???????

I have run into many in the D/s lifestyle who are not emotionally or mentally stable. Not saying that one cannot be e/m healthy but many use D/s to work on their own stuff. One of my biggest concerns are submissives who come out of an abusive relationship and turn to D/s to work it out. Also, there are many dominants not all who use D/s as to validate their own controlling, violent, and narccistic behaviors. Again not all may fall into this situation.

However, borderline personality disorder, is a very controversial diagnoses since it has hit the DSM-IV.
It would be remiss to discuss BPD without including a comment about Linehan's work. In contrast to the symptom list approaches detailed below, Linehan has developed a comprehensive sociobiological theory which appears to be borne out by the successes found in controlled studies of her Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Linehan theorizes that borderlines are born with an innate biological tendency to react more intensely to lower levels of stress than others and to take longer to recover. They peak "higher" emotionally on less provocation and take longer coming down. In addition, they were raised in environments in which their beliefs about themselves and their environment were continually devalued and invalidated. These factors combine to create adults who are uncertain of the truth of their own feelings and who are confronted by three basic dialectics they have failed to master (and thus rush frantically from pole to pole of):

vulnerability vs invalidation
active passivity (tendency to be passive when confronted with a problem and actively seek a rescuer) vs apparent competence (appearing to be capable when in reality internally things are falling apart)
unremitting crises vs inhibited grief.

Best form of treatment is DBT. It works and is very good.

However I would make sure to rule out all other mental health disorders before diagnosing BPD.

I hope this information helps.

I think most people learn to live with any mental problems they have in day to day life and that in general most people have problems of some degree.   But in BDSM subs go into subspace and walls come down, things that hold certain mental disorders in place in normal life are removed and some of those things took years to build and they may not even know they are there.
I had an ex that was 25 got into bdsm,  subbed to her ex and suddenly her walls and barriers came down and she began to remember being abused as a child she shifted into DID which is dissociative identity disorder  or what was formally known as multiple personalities.   along with PTS post traumatic stress.    Putting yourself into a position of full submission can have unexpected consequences.   through years of therapy and medication she was able to deal with these things.   she is now married again has a child and is leading a happy life.    So BDSM can have a huge impact on mental stability but it can also as the Chinese would say clear your "chi"   and allow you to unblock things and grow and rebalance your life.   Which of course is why you really need to trust the D cause you never know what will happen mentally with some people.   In my ex's place she subbed then he freaked out abused her more and left her more of a mess.   she switched to her D side as her protective personalities took over that aspect of her life so that I was sub to her and I like to think helped her through a rough time in her life.  However the toll it took on both of us to endure that challenge was more then we where able to overcome to proceed in our own relationship once she was back on the road to recovery.
