quote:
This was neither sanctioned by, nor carried out by, the state - nor was it a "punishment" mandated by Law in the area where it happened. It was, in effect, vigilante in nature and carried out by the person (people) who were wronged by the guy's actions - not because that's what 1000 year old custom, religious law, secular law, and a gender specific repressive system have dictated Has to be done. Excellent point Peach. i asked this question, because i heard from a few women... "Good for them!", and comments along that line. These same women are horrified of the harsh treatment women receive in fundamentalist led countries. Of course, the government sanction makes it different in practice, but theoretically, i see very little difference, apart from the gender of the victim.
