Dear lord; is that what passes for an article in a US magazine these days?

I've seen more in-depth investigations written on bus stops.

I don't even need to read it to have a good idea what you're talking about. Time magazine is crap compared to what it was 20 years ago. It's a cross between the commercialized news of CNN and the "oh, wow!" celebrity tabloidism of People magazine. They generally do a good job of getting their facts straight, but they write the stories for the kind of demographic that has an attention span of about 20 seconds, and won't read anything that doesn't sound breathlessly exciting. It sure ain't The Economist, I can tell you that.

Perhaps you prefer the Boston Herald from Ted's own backyard.

Actually, I do. That's a terrific OP. I don't disagree with a word of it, and find a lot of it quite informative.

Don't misunderstand me, Don - I'm sure not defending Kennedy. I'm criticizing Time.  I didn't even have a comment on that particular article - I was just answering Rapier's question about whether Time had really become that bad a magazine since he used to read it. All I'm saying is the magazine has gone way downhill over the last 10 or 20 years.

I can think of very few that haven't gone that path. I was once an avid reader of USN&WR and another that I loved called Insight. It's hard to find a news magazine today that I feel is worth my time.

I remember Insight; but I can't remember what I remember about it. That wasn't one of the Sunday newspaper specials, was it? I did used to subscribe to US News, though, along with Time and Newsweek, and between that, a few regular newspapers, and the evening news every night, I felt pretty confident I knew what was going on in the world most of the time. Now? Shit. I hardly remember what that feels like. The most objective and informative news I can find on American affairs is a British magazine, The Economist.

How the hell did we ever get here? I should have stayed in Hawaii. It was still the United States, but it didn't feel like the United States. It was a lot easier to forget what a friggin' mess everything was.

No, it was a newsstand magazine. It started out as a freebie - they gave away subscriptions to promote it I think for the first year. I liked Insight because it seemed more balanced and agenda free than the the other popular news magazines. I continued to subscribe until it was sold and the format and package was changed for the worse.

I finally succumbed to cable and broke down and signed up. I find that I mostly watch news channels but I have to flip between CNN and Fox and some of the the others. Nobody tells the whole story these days. They all have their own spin and they all leave out important info that does not further their agenda - and you have to tune to the other guy to get that info. You cannot listen to or read from one news outlet and get the whole picture. That's sad.

I was surprised to see this on CNN.com this morning - the day of Kennedy's burial. Last place I expected to see the C word today.

I'm afraid that's been repeated pretty much worldwide; in the UK, the BBC followed ITN's decision in the early 90s to start the "dumbing down" process, and things have gone from bad to worse.

I watch very little TV these days, but I noticed recently, while on holiday in Italy and staying at a hotel with English-speaking cable channels, that I couldn't watch CNN or Fox for long without losing the will to live. Fox in particular was abysmal, but neither of them was what you'd call intelligent. In the UK, BBC News 24 and Sky News are almost as bad.

On the bright side, the net means a person can at least research their own news, so long as you remember to invoke a crazy-filter for the more fringe elements

Hey know that Teddy's body is stiff and cold, lets give him a proper burial, lets heave his coffin off the Chappaquiddick Bridge.

We know he did not save Mary Jo's body that night, I always wondered if he saved his bottle of Chavez Regal from that sinking car, I bet he did, he had his priorities.

Ted Kennedy Jr said today : "My father was not perfect, but he believed in redemption."

For the people who wish that after Chappaquidick, he had faded into oblivion, I am grateful he didn't.

Sen. Kennedy did a lot of good during the time he served the people of this country.

The laws have changed since 1969.
"Drunk driving accidents" were treated as accidents and not crimes.
I am glad for that change.

The people here who view him with contempt for his failings, even if you never do something as terrible as something that results in the death of someone, may you not be remembered soley for the worst thing you ever did.

If you can believe anything that's heard on NPR, Ted Kennedy used to love Chappaquiddick jokes - it was one of his favorite topics of humor.

I'm not a big Ted fan but I can have some respect for the man. After loosing two brothers by assination in a six year time frame, I could see myself having some extra strong drinks while thinking about the future of my own political career. For better or worse, Ted  kept his set and continued to stay in politics. To me, Ted was an opponent but not an enemy.

If I am remembered only for the worst things I did in my life nobody will be able to say that I did not take responsibility for them.

It is unfortunate that we lost the loudest voice for the poor and the voiceless...and one of the greatest civil/human rights leaders of our time.

I agree, Ted Kennedy a child of wealth and privledge was never "for the workingman."
I don't know why people in the Press keep repeating that.

Insight was a magazine published by the moonies. It wasn't remotely balanced or agenda free.

Wellstone II?

quote:

Reid: Teddy's death "going to help us"

The Reno Gazette-Journal has a sit-down with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who addresses the Ted Kennedy question in, um, an interesting way.
Q: How will U.S. Sen. (Edward) Kennedy's death affect things?

A: I think it's going to help us. He hasn't been around for some time. We're going to have a new chairman of that committee, it'll be, I don't know for sure, but I think Sen. (Chris) Dodd, (D-Conn.). He has a right to take it. Either him or (U.S. Sen. Tom) Harkin, (D-Iowa), whichever one wants it can have it. I think he (Kennedy) will be a help. He's an inspiration for us. That was the issue of his life and he didn't get it done.
