You happen to be surrounded by your dreams, oral fixations are managed here to everyones content, on a daily basis.

I quit smoking 8 years ago. I decided that it was safest for me to do this when I had some time off. Many smokers, including myself, smoke as part of a ritual, routine or habit. What worked for me (and yes several previous attempts failed) was to get out of my normal routine (which was work for a week) and do something totally different. It will sound odd, but the other thing that was helpful to me was that I did not destroy or throw away all my cigarettes. I had a few - there was something about the comfort of knowing that I still had some nearby (in case of emergency) that provided reassurance. So I quit "cold turkey."

I am certainly not trying to suggest that my method will be helpful to you. But I think it really starts by looking at why you smoke and knowing yourself and building a plan around that.

Also be realistic - quitting was the hardest thing that I have done in my life. The ONLY reason I don't start smoking again is because I never want to have to quit again.

Now that I have quit though - I am very glad. I feel healthier.

Good luck!

~Ms Cherice

30 days smoke free today! I went to the doc, got a scrip, chewed the gum, wore the patch. Found I could not chew the gum responsibly...was probably getting more nicotine from the amount of gum chewed than I ever did from the cigs....so I gave up the gum <sigh>.

Then I talked myself out of accosting friends and strangers in passing cars for 'JUST ONE' cig...then I told myself I would not smoke - just for the next hour, and took it one hour at a time.

Currently I go out and buy a pretty shiny thing every weekend with the money that I did NOT spend on cigs. I don't know how long I will continue the reward, but will do it for as long as it takes.

AND I did not put on a ton of weight, or even a pound. I allowed myself free time from diet and exercise for two weeks, then I went back to my regular routine. Good luck in your journey!

There's some truth to that. I just quit recently, and it was much easier to deal with when my slavegirl (sylph) was here. If I was having nicotine cravings, I sure as Hell wasn't feeling 'em. Now we are apart for awhile and I am hanging in there, but it is definitely rougher. I found a solution, though: just maintain constant daily contact with her.

I am taking off to see her in (hopefully) just a few days...and it's not the nicotine I'm craving...it's her!

Littlepita -> RE: Stopping Smoking (2/26/2006 9:09:37 PM)

It's not that hard to quit but damn hard to stick to it. I quit with the help of this site which I think is excellent. http://www.quitsmokingonline.com/

I started back up off and on when I was going through my divorce. I am back on the smoke free wagon and plan to stay there!

Buy a pack of cigaretts. Take them out individually. Run a horse hair through each one using a needle. Now start smoking.

The best advice I can give you is a few things to remember dearly:

* When your mind starts saying - and it will: "That single one cigarette is not going to hurt" - It's lying. You CANNOT smoke that single cigarette.

* When something bad happens in your life, and your mind starts saying: "I'll be able to deal with this a lot better with just one cigarette"- It's lying. Your problems won't go away from that smoke. Feeling sad because you failed quitting is not going to make you feel better, but worse.

* Find support if you need it. If you know how to post in newsgroups, seek out alt.support.stop-smoking (or try googles web interface at http://groups.google.com/group/alt.support.stop-smoking). They won't get bored by your troubles as your friends and family will eventually. They've all gone through it and they are there because they want to support others.

* Get a silkquit meter to help you at http://www.silkquit.org/

Three years, seven months, two weeks and four days I haven't smoked by now. That's at least 39898 cigarettes less. What I did with the € 5.825,37 I saved this way is really not your business, you nosy little rat. Also, some would argue I will now live 19 weeks, 5 days, 12 hours, 50 minutes longer, however, I think that depends on *your* driving skills just as well.

HisGirl8 -> RE: Stopping Smoking (2/28/2006 3:03:23 PM)

I have to admit first that I smoke. I smoke Eclipse brand cigs which are better but not perfect. I'm getting ready to go through this again too and am dreading it.

I quit before for about 3 months. It wasn't too bad except I couldn't think about anything but quitting and smoking quitting and smoking... I went back to it after some major trauma and haven't quit again- that was a year ago.

But here's my tricks...

I did the patch. It helped A LOT.

Another time I quit smoking I used a toxin cleanser- Vale's to be specific. And I found that it reduced cravings tremedously. This is only to be done if you plan to quit cold turkey.

All that said e-mail me if you want some support and a quit partner :)

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Stopping Smoking (3/1/2006 4:00:44 PM)

Well, here's my advice, for whatever it's worth. We'll call it "Michelle's Five Step Program". I goes as follows...

1.) Pick a day to quit... and appoint a sober babysitter (for yourself, not your kids).

2.) The day before that day, smoke as many cigarettes as your lungs can handle without immediate collapse.

3.) Also, buy a fifth of whiskey, a fifth of vodka, and a case of beer.

4.) At about noon on the day before you quit, begin to drink as though you're an alcoholic at happy hour.

5.) Keep this up until either all cigarettes and alcohol are gone, or you're near passing out. If you're not sick yet, have your sober buddy go pick up refills and keep going until you know you're going to ralph the whole next day. If you are sick at this point, have your buddy toss whatever is left over and help you to your bed. It's advisable for them to bring your a huge bottle of water, a puke bucket, and an entire bottle of aspirin.

With all that in your system you ought to be disgustingly sick the whole next day. Your only thoughts of smoking will probably make you hurk in the trash can. Actually, you'll probably be pretty sick for a couple of days, but those are the worst. It's along the same line as the "bang me in the toe so I forget about my headache" routine. If it makes you feel better, it gets noticeably easier after the first week, and a hell of a lot easier after the second. Those first two weeks are the worst, but it's worth it. Make sure you have lots of things to chew on and good luck!

P.S.- One of the things that helped me when I cut down a year ago was that I got deathly ill. I caught some particularly violent flu, complete with fever so high I hallucinated. I smoked roughly two cigarettes that week and they made me even sicker. After that the desire just wasn't there. I know that it's a particularly nasty way to do it, and I don't wish illness upon you, but if you happen to get a little bug, take the opportunity to kick the habit. You probably won't get a better chance.

Good luck candystripper![:)]

Master is close to a month on His quit program - admittedly He has weakened a few times and had one cigarette when the cravings got too much for Him but this is the longest He has ever gone keeping up with quitting. He is still on the strongest nicotine patch but after next week will be going on to Stage 2.

I am hopeful he will manage to quit for good this time[:)] He says if He can quit anyone can. He admits He has an addictive personality, when He drank He drank to excess (lots of binge drinking) but managed to quit that cold turkey several years ago when His health worsened. He also used drugs a lot when He was younger, apart from heroin He's tried every drug there is I'm sure! Now it's just pot to help with pain and sleep.

I washed all the ashtrays and put them away, there are still cigarettes here but they are out of sight, He no longer takes them with Him when we go anywhere. That is a HUGE step, before this the cigarettes were always within reach. I was so proud of Him the first time we went out without the cigarettes! The day He finally throws them out I'll be even prouder[:D]

Best of success in the endevor to quit smoking!!

A couple of websites and organizations that helped me along the way ---

QuitNet is a group that has some good advice and a chatroom with nice folk in it. I 'lived' in that chatroom for a few months when I first quit.

http://www.quitnet.com/

Then there is Nicotine Anonymous. The site is a good place for getting meeting info and other Nic-A stuff.

http://www.nicotine-anonymous.org/

The unofficial Nicotine Anonymous Yahoo group is a bunch of neat folk.

www.unofficialnicanon.com/

Google search to find nicotine and smoking cessation groups turns up a bunch of links, among which you might find something useful.

The secret to success in quitting smoking is like any other effort; first decide you want to do it, the find what works for you. Once you have found what works for you, do it with diligence, patience, and perseverance. And be nice to yourself too. That really helps!! So does having people with whom you can discuss the problems, both face to face and on-line.

As for me, I wanted to see what quitting for the change of the millenium would be like in 1998, and haven't smoked since. My stats, according to a free counter I downloaded, are:
Eight years, six days, 22 hours, 49 minutes and 7 seconds. 73223 cigarettes not smoked, saving $7,322.38. Life saved: 36 weeks, 2 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes. but who's keeping track?
And that's at $2.00 per pack.
