What about this speech?

Video: The Great Indoctrinator - Ronald Reagan
In 1988, Ronald Reagan pushed his anti-government, low-tax ideology in a speech broadcast to classrooms nationwide.

Fast-forward twenty-one years later, and the very same people who lapped up Reagan's right-wing speech are throwing a fit because today Barack Obama gave a totally different kind of classroom speech, one focused not on politics, but rather on the importance of staying in school.

Ah but tazzy...surely you realize that isn't the speech he was originally planning to give, that's the one he switched to after the heroic media personalities caught on and forced him to back down. here's a link to the speech he intended to give: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLqplbwD644 [:D]

my kid did not suddenly come home spouting communist or Nazi dogma. Maybe he didn't listen.......

(edited so you would be able to tell that the above is frakkin sarcasm)

greenearth21 -> RE: The "Speach" (9/8/2009 11:06:56 PM)

I did wonder why Obama chose to do such a speech.  I still don't understand however I do understand and encourage betterment of oneself through education and such.  I personally felt pity for the educational boards that were stuck between being asked to broadcast the speech and the parents who were possibly calling in to complain.  Ofcourse there were parents who kept their children home just so they would not watch the speech. My personal judgement is thats just dumb.  Yes-kids are sponges when it comes to absorbing information, and I would think most parents do not want their children absorbing the wrong information is wrong.  So how would a man , who just happens to be president that we may disagree when it comes to policies, telling your children to learn, be all they can be and keep an eye on their goals be so bad to keep your children out of school?  yah...we'll show that communist, right?
I would allow my child to watch if he wanted to or not, and if he did-i'd be sure to ask him what he thought/heard/learned/disagrees/questions about the whole deal.  That's how we teach our children right from wrong, good from bad, personal judgements and misunderstandings,stereotyping;  rather than imposing our personal warped views upon them.

And the very same left-wing people who denounced it an d decried the political process being carried to the kiddies are the same ones who now see no problem with the president of their choosing going into the classroom.  Where IS Dick Gebhart anyway?  Or is he still living back in his "glory days" when he called for an investigation into the shocking sum of $ 26, 000 spent to broadcast the first  Bush's speech to the kids?  Where ARE all those lefties so up in arms over a President going to the kids?  Where ARE all those teacher's union members decrying the intrusion into the classroom?

I don't recall there being anything of the sort, so perhaps they are right where they always were....in your imagination.

1991 ~ GHW Bush addressed public school students and the Democrats investagated.  Teachers unions were upset over him intruding into their classrooms.

~ Fast Reply ~

What great evidence this thread is of the 'short attention span' electorate.

Whether it's 1991 or last week when without the accompanying, and subsequently withdrawn, lesson plan generated by the Administration; there wouldn't have been any 'indoctrination' accusation from one side, or 'crisis' for the Administration to defend. But worse is seeing the resulting scripted speech used to illustrate the benevolent nature of the originally intended script. Whether intended or just another mistake from one of the lackeys working for the Administration believing what was said yesterday was what was originally intended requires a level of senility that, thankfully, my 87 year old parents have yet to reach.

Actually Arpig, tis not in my mind.  Here is the first paragraph taken from the article to be found here... http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/When-Bush-spoke-to-students-Democrats-investigated-held-hearings-57694347.html

The controversy over President Obama's speech to the nation's schoolchildren will likely be over shortly after Obama speaks today at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington DC, the controversy was just beginning. Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue.

Perhaps this paragraph, taken from the article to be found here...  http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2009/09/03/03speech.h29.html came from my mind and the address I've just given is fictitious?

Mr. Obama is not the first president to address schoolchildren directly—Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush made such speeches during their terms in office—nor is he the first to draw controversy.
The elder President Bush’s 1991 speech set off a similar partisan war, with Democrats accusing the Republican of using children as political pawns and demanding that then-Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander—a Republican who is now a U.S. senator from Tennessee—explain why the Education Department spent more than $20,000 on the event. ("Democrats Question Use of E.D. Funds for Bush Address," October 9, 1991.)

Work hard and you can be successful;

Just ask your parents whos 401k is wiped out - (TARP)

Just ask your granny who lost her life savings and went back to work at Walmart.   Just ask your brother who went to prison because the only jobs left are drug dealers.

Yeah work hard kiddies!   You can be like your elders!

(do as I say- not as I do)

GAG!

pahunkboy -> RE: The "Speach" (9/9/2009 12:10:40 PM)

And now precious scholars,

pay attention.   A tall black man from the Southside of Chicago is going to read you a story.

It is "the little engine that could."

Tell your family a big black man came into your school and he plays basketball- and organized a community.  (one where there has been 1 killing a day all summer)

"community organizer"    BLOW ME!

Arpig -> RE: The "Speach" (9/9/2009 12:14:40 PM)

Jeez pahunk, letting your latent racism out for to play today much?
