Okay.  This is a really embarrassing question.  I never know really ahead of time what we're going to do when, so I'm thinking about being "ready" for anything every day.  My question is this:  Would a daily enema eventually cause a person's bowels to stop being able to work on their own?

Generally speaking, it's not advisable. I understand the desire, but the body can become quite dependent on them and it can pose a health risk. Nothing is a hard and fast rule for anyone, but I know they recommend not. Same goes for laxatives and such too.

FR, after read thru

Some of the specific issues of concern are that enemas wash away the natural mucous that lines the mucosal tissue of the rectum & colon . . . . That & that regular enemas can weaken the muscle tone of that end of the digestive tract . . . . .

I know people who 'clean out' daily, or every other day, & it seems to work for them, they've done it for years . . . . . Personally, that would be problematic for me, from personal experience I can tolerate it a coupla times a week . . . . . .

Bad idea.
Anal's bound to get rustic at some point even if you're very thorough...it's just one of those things.

Ah, c'mon, Davan, more details than that, please . . . . . .

& I love that turn of phrase, a little rustic, what an awesomely delicate way of putting it . . .. .

The flip argument (hehehe, play devil's advocate for a moment) is that there're plenty of non-kinky people who occasionally or regular partake of enemas for 'health benefits' & do okay with it . . . . . & there have been phases, historically, when enemas have been more & less 'popular'. (Victorian health nuts being one of my favorite examples . . . . )

& I should've said, I can do that cleanin' out thang at most a coupla times a week . . . . . & not sure how longitudinally that would be sustainable, frankly . . .. . . *wry grin* . . . . . Have not really explored my limits in that direction . . . . . But I pay careful attention to what my body tells me, how it feels, how it affects my digestive process, & take changes easy & gentle & slow . . . . . .

my advice is not medically supported, but i would advise against it. but, it's your body, and if you can tolerate an enema on a daily basis, good for you.

as i've aged, i find that my body no longer tolerates disruptions to the normal digestive process, including the insertion of anything to the anus and colon.

There are many variables. Are you talking a daily 4 quart, 15 minute retention soapy clean out or a bulb full of mineral water?

Many things you can do to maintain the bodies equilibrium while doing regular enemas. Eat lots of active culture yogurt and high fiber fruits and veggies. Once or twice a week put a couple teaspoons of mineral oil in the bag (but only when you have a couple hours to be alone, oil replaces the natural lubricants, but can cause a little leakage. I have never seen or had it happen but have heard of it). Do not do long retentions. This is often where the headache or lightheaded feeling comes from after an enema. Any liquid you put up the ass is going to be partially absorbed. It's what the intestine is designed to do. Adding a little salt or better yet using isotonic saline instead of water stops this problem. Saline is harder to take, you will feel more pressure. Similar reasons for why no one should ever put more than a cup of alcoholic liquid (such as beer, wine, or mouthwash) in with the enema, you will absorb the booze so much faster and it can be harmful. There is a small amount of research showing that cold tea (black or green) high in antioxidants gives better results taken as an enema.

But you can do daily if you take a few of the above precautions. I'd recommend only a light cleanout most of the time with maybe once or twice a week doing a big one to really empty the pipe.

I have read if you have an adequate fiber intake, a complete enema really isn't necessary since our bodies only use that area for short term storage.
You might try something like an anal douche instead for a quick rinse.

It's 2 quarts of plain warm water, and I eat lots of fruits and veggies, and love yogurt.

Thank you everyone for the information.  I couldn't ask my doctor, cause she verbally "reamed me," telling me what I'm preparing for is perverted.  lmao

Is it time to find a different doc?

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Are Daily Enemas Unhealthy? (9/10/2009 1:59:55 PM)

I spoke with one of the PIs (colorectal surgeons) for whom I do research, and this is what he told me-

The basic response was "Yes, daily enemas are unhealthy", and he offered me several reasons:

1. Daily enemas destroy the natural flora of the intestines. Research is now discovering that our intestinal bacteria do more than help us digest our food and capture nutrients. They are also instrumental in the health and well-being of our immune system and neurological systems. In addition, there are a number of nutrients that we cannot obtain without healthy intestinal flora.

2. Daily enemas 'confuse' the "rectal trigger"... the series of neurological events that the rectum uses to signal the body that it is time to empty the bowels.

3. Persistent use of daily enemas can result in constipation, as the intestines believe that the stool contains too much water, and they re-adjust to absorb a greater amount of water (and the attendant toxins) from our vacating stool.

4. Daily enemas irritate the sensitive villi in the rectum, and may contribute to inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), diverticulitis, diverticulosis, and hemorrhoids, as the mucosal structure of the intestines attempts to cope with the excess fluid, chlorine, and other pollutants present in our water supply. Some have tried to get past this by using distilled water for enemas, but this has its own set of risks, as the use of distilled water for enemas can result in an electrolyte imbalance (including nasty symptoms like dizzyness, nausea, vomiting, erratic heart rate, vision disturbances, and loss of consciousness). While there is no -direct- link between colon cancer and "colonics", there is a direct link between inflammatory bowel disorders and colon cancer, so that is something to be aware of."

Most colorectal surgeons and colon-health specialists agree that one or two "colonics" a month are unlikely to do any damage, but at the level of one per week, the risk of doing permanent damage to your digestive system increases substantially, and daily use is notably more risky.

Thank you, Kia, I needed a good < giggle >.  :>
I was really happy to have access to a bidet for a time when I was partaking with particular frequency of such activities but, really, I don't understand why people make such a big fuss about a little potential messy-ness..well, yes, I do: we have a wonked up society (Ie:I want to put my unit < or whatever > up there but I don't want anything other than an absolutely pristine experience <yes, I am imagining a penis with a computer-enhanced sparkle on the end and yes, I am more than a little deranged, lol! >).
I had a colonic done once.  I didn't enjoy it, it wasn't traumatic either.  My bodily function was as it normally is within a couple of days.  < shrug >  In other words, I think I could've spend that money better but hey, I had the experience, right?!

OP: Were I you, I would write a scathing note to that doctor, copy his or her superiors in the practice (If any) on it, and would also send it to the state regulatory agency of relevance: judgmental healthcare practitioners like that are an asset to no one, though they are are, ever so perfectly in sync with our topic, asses!
Best wishes and happy anal goodness,
  Davan

D'HOH! I cannot believe I did not suggest Tristan Taorminos site[:o]. She is one of the best experts in the world on all things anal and I have used her site frequently for ideas and answers. Puckerup.com is an anal fetishes dream site and she is VERY good about answering questions. (Plus she has a very cute heiny and some beautiful tattoos - just cannot go wrong)

FR, after continuing read thru

In my not-so-humble, this is one of those topics where mainstream porn has really fucked with people's perceptions of reality, to wit, butts don't contain poo . . . . . It seems to be a common meme, that penises have some kind of 'right' to probe anuses & rectums & never come in contact with feces . . . . . .

&, having thought on this, those persons I know who clean out so frequently might not know that it's effected their digestive stuff until they quit . . . . . .

Umm, it is kind of ridiculous to think that a penis in a butt won't get poopy.  Also I was hoping to find out before that point, but I guess it's just not a good idea to do a daily.  haha

DemonKia -> RE: Are Daily Enemas Unhealthy? (9/11/2009 8:09:28 PM)

Another thought: there's this thing about spontaneity versus pre-planning that can be a significant factor in people's sexual enjoyment. There are those who need to feel that sex is happening spontaneously & things like cleaning out & such can interfere with that experience . . . . . I come from the other end of the spectra, planning makes me happy & satisfied & I enjoy pre-meditated fun & games . . . . . But I know from experience that this comes into conflict with partners who need to feel 'free' & 'liberated' in the spontaneity of their sexual expression . . . . If any of that made sense in this context . . . .

More particularly on topic is that you could probably experiment with having, say, 'Butt Sex Weeks' every once in a while where you go hog wild & clean out every day for the week, wear a butt plug much of the time, & otherwise 'present' that ready anus . . . . . If you get my drift . . . . . & see how your bod' does with that . . . . .

fluffypet61 -> RE: Are Daily Enemas Unhealthy? (9/11/2009 8:39:18 PM)

What about a "Fleet" sized (4 1/2 ounces) enema to prep?  The info on Fleet even mentiones that it can be used to prep for medical procedures and that it can be used up to 7 days in a row before consulting a physician (if it doesn't clear constipation).  The penis is not going to need two quarts of space to work with, is it?  A Gay friend of mine told me about the Fleet - that it was what he used to prep for anal.  The product mentioned above - anal douche - is all it takes. [:)]

DemonKia -> RE: Are Daily Enemas Unhealthy? (9/11/2009 9:31:19 PM)

Hi, fluffy!

The argument is that the chemicals in the Fleet pack a lot of punch relative to the need, & that for simple cleansing plain water or simple saline solution are preferred . . . .

Tho' you've got a point about the volume of fluid -- those Fleet rigs are only around a pint (1/2 pint?), about the volume of the rectum (very roughly) . . . . . The problem is that material in the digestive tract is moved down thru the regular action of peristalsis, & that enemas can trigger peristalsis to move material down from the colon & further up reaches of the intestines . . . . . Also, the fluids being inserted can soften the material further up, making the whole situation potentially more 'rustic' rather than less . . . . . There can be this situation where deep cleaning (several enemas, quart quantities) can be 'necessary' to provide some assurance that everything will stay 'visually clean' for some hours . . . . .
